oh.  and it swirls on seawall so don't get any crazy thoughts like "at least it will help in one direction".

Hey guys!  I know I planned to be back last night, but I hit the gym instead and spend some time with my son since he's home for spring break this week.  I'm about a week behind here so bear with me:

Tracy - congrats on the promo!

Trina - congrats on your first tri!  You did great!

Doug - Happy birthday a little late!

Jeff - sorry about your accident.  Hope the surgery goes well and you heal up fast.

Steve - good luck with your surgery also.

Suzy - nice bike!

I'm not sure what I did over the weekend to my right shin, but I'm getting random shooting pains in the front part of my leg the last 2 days.  There doesn't seem to be any particular thing that causes the pain - just comes and goes.  I'm going to try a short run tonight and see what happens.  If it's still acting up, I'll just stick with biking and swimming this week - I could use the extra training with both anyway.

SSMinnow - 2010-03-09 9:24 AM Hey Doug:  What are you doing post run to aid recovery?  When I was marathon training, I would always do an ice bath after the effort for about 10 mins.  I would throw in some Epsom Salts/Baking Soda to reduce inflammation further.  Since I started tri training, a recovery drink is consumed in the first 10 minutes after finishing a long workout...mine is choc milk, but there are lots of options.  I usually eat a decent meal after the bath too.....just throwing out some ideas to help.

PS one other thought, is it possible you are doing these long runs at too hard of an intensity?  Typically, my head was fried after my long runs, but the body was pretty in tact, especially after a good nights sleep.

Suzy, do you (or others) have suggestions for how to re-fuel when your stomach feels like crap? That is often the case for me after excessively long or hard efforts. I try to get in the initial re-fuel no matter what (I've been doing chocolate milk but might experiment more), but then I often feel full or sort-of sick or just not hungry in the least and it's several hours before I crave any real food. I know it's really important to get that nutrition in but oftentimes it's the last thing I want to do. I try mild foods but really I need something substantial after subsisting on sugary mixes and chewies for hours on end...

John, what is up with swirling wind? It seems to be the story of my life. I have several routes that are like that -- I get the major headwinds and can't wait to go the other direction. Coming back, yup, major headwinds. I know it's good for me but it's bad for my psyche on longer rides!!

Hydration system?

mini pump? (I carry one in addition to CO2 because I worry about the possibility of going through my CO2 and then I am SOL.)

Not sure how well it would work if your stomach feels like crap but what I try to do is have a smoothie.
1 cup frozen straberries
1 bananna
1 cup milk
Flax seed
protein powder.

LOL except for the flax and protein powder the recipe is from a kids show.  But it tastes great after a workout, plus it helps cool you down.

hehe yeah lots to choose from.  Really depends on what you want to do.  Is this going to be your road/tri-bike?  If so then maybe some clip-on aero bars might be an early purchase.

You're doing shorter distance races now right?  If so I would't worry about bento box/hydration (other than water bottles on the bike), or some of those other items yet.

Also agree on the mini-pump.  imo C02 is for racing, I always carry a mini pump and will probably also carry one at lonestar on the frame just in case.

Suzy:

We are on the same wavelength. I did an ice bath right afterwards. I could only stand 10 minutes! I also drink chocolate milk. I actual focus on all the chocalte milk goodness as I run.  I need to do better post-run stretching.

I do have a couple of thoughts, but I know this is really an individual thing.  First, after LT rides or Tempo runs the last thing I feel like doing is eating solid food.  In that case, I drink 8oz of Chocolate Milk and 3g of Glutamine in water.  If my stomach feels like crap after it, I literally lay down on my stomach to get it to settle down for 10 or so minutes. The cause of that stomach upset is blood moving away from your digestion system to your legs and arms at high efforts.   I usually miss the 30-60 minute eating window, but at  least I know I have gotten the 3:1 ratio of carbs/protein from the milk.

If you are feeling sick after long runs which are typically done at lower intensity then I question what was going on nutritionally during the long run.  When I was running marathons, often times i did not take in enough calories on the run and then eating afterwards was nearly impossible.  If I ate, I had definite GI issues for several hours.  I started really looking at the amount and what i was taking in on those efforts and slowly increased it throug the use of Infinit custom blend.  You mention sugary stuff.  I don't do that anymore because I think it hurts me more than helps me (again just me).  Now that I am not marathonning and doing tris I stick to stuff that is primarily malodextrin and easier to absorb and digest (e.g. Carb Pro is great).   I need to experiment a little more this year, because the addition of Perpeteum with protein caused me some issues from bike to run (e.g. bloating).  My coach told me I need protein for HIMs to IMs, but I am not totally sure I agree with it.  I guess I will have the chance to experiment with three HIMs this spring/summer. What I can say is when I fuel enough during the effort and get in some level of nutrition post I definitely feel better post and days after.

I read an article from Deena Kastor last year and she commented that even if she felt like total crap she still ate post workouts because she knew it led to better second runs that day and the following.....

What does the course have?  If they have stuff on the course I would say that you DO NOT need anything on the back.  However, if I remember right you only have one bottle cage on your frame?  This may be a little different.  Are you going to use an Aero Bottle up front?

Keep in mind in order to take a bottle you will need to dispose of a bottle on your bike, so bring water bottles you don't care about (maybe even a plastice gatorade bottle.

If you want to keep your water bottles take what they give you and dump it into your Airstream up front, then toss that bottle right back to em....

Thanks Suzy and Tony. Tony -- usually a smoothie is my go-to post-workout meal, so perhaps I'm on to something there. I think yesterday I didn't want one because it was pretty cold outside and it did not sound good! In fact, I almost turned my chocolate milk into hot chocolate!

I've been good about getting SOMETHING in right away, and I probably do get more nutrition within an hour, whether I want it or not. When I said sugary stuff, I meant the Infinit or Carbo Pro drinks. I'm doing almost only Infinit on long rides. Haven't done long runs in awhile but was doing shot bloks and/or Infinit or Carbo Pro for those. Not as crazy about doing liquid nutrition for longer runs as I don't plan to carry it for IM, so want to stick to things I'll be doing race-day.

For longer runs (i.e. marathon training), did you find that when you took in MORE calories when you were running that you didn't feel as ick tummy-wise after?

I have been using a little bit of protein in my Infinit mixture for awhile, and my coach suggested bumping it up a bit. I tried some yesterday -- one bottle of the old and one bottle of the new (I think the difference is only 2-3g of protein over 20 oz.). No real comments, hard to know anything from one ride/run.

I suggest you experiment for a while with your hand positions when riding before you run out and get your aerobars.  For example, I like to climb with my hands in position 1 (on the bars by the stem) because I am a freak and feel I can generate more power there versus on my horns, so I needed fold up pads on my road bike which limited my aero bar choices significantly.  If you get fixed pads that don't flip up, when you are not in aero position you will lose hand position 1 on your road bike bars.  That may make a difference in comfort when riding longer distances.

Just my $.02

Kayla-  I don't remember the question but here are some tidbits I'd like to share.

I have used Infinit for the last three years on the bike.  Love the stuff.  No problems up to the half distance however for my IM about half way through the bike I tried a Uncrustable PBJ just because I knew I needed SOMETHING solid for the long day and I wanted to spread it out.  I didn't like it but I ate it anyway.  LOVED them in training.  Just one of those things that race day throws at you.  Have a plan ABC.  Like you, I didn't run with my own mix for the run and alternated the water stations and took Water at one and Gatorade at another with Gu every once in a while and endurolytes every 45 min or so (pending heat factor), no food on the run for anything up to a half however on the IM your tired of gu so I did a lot of oranges.  Tried the pretzels and that sucked.  Chicken soup is suppose to be awesome but I didn't care for it and the generic deflated coke didn't work for me either but I think it's a individual thing and if I was out there again I would try it again.  You never know what will work on a given race day.  IMPORTANT:  Just know if you ever think about starting the coke during a race you need to plan on keeping it up.  Don't take it till you NEED it.

FYI...I believe Lonestar offers Orange Gatorade on the bike course.  Don't remember the run drink probably thinking about a beer by then.

Post workout:  Chocolate Milk, Smoothie,  OR PBJ (my favorite), Ham and Cheese rolled up accompanied by a piece of fruit.

Well that's it for now.

When is your race? If it is soon then I would not add aero bars at ths time. You need to get used to them. Also you would probably want to have your bike refitted with thte bars on to take advantage of them and to ensure that you can hold the aero position comfortably for the required length of the bike segment.

That said, I have an old set on my road bike. I currently ride that on my trainer and the aero-position is uncomfortable for the reasons I stated above.

I have been using a little bit of protein in my Infinit mixture for awhile, and my coach suggested bumping it up a bit. I tried some yesterday -- one bottle of the old and one bottle of the new (I think the difference is only 2-3g of protein over 20 oz.). No real comments, hard to know anything from one ride/run.

most importantly.....Where's your AVATAR???
