Neil, Sally and Matt, if I am following along correctly you guys are all racing this weekend as well? Anyone else? Good luck to everyone racing, and safe training to those that aren't.

The last part of the bike was slower but it was the same for the pros.

A lot slower, must have been some stiff headwind.  Jason's first run split is in and so far so good.  Melissa is in that headwind now looks like

Yeah, seriously!!  That's 15 mins slower than last year.  Looks like both the bike and run times were quite a bit slower.

Good job getting it done Jason!  C'mon Melissa!

Yeah, I only see 5 guys under 2:20 for the bike. Then of all people it's Crowie making a break for it there.

Since I was the only person to guess over (ie. "slower"), does that mean I win?

When Bree Wee runs a 1:48, you know it was tough!! Crowie only ran a 1:23.

Great job Jason, on what was surely a hard day out there.

They are both in.  Good job guys.

Sally picked a good weekend to head to the mountains.  Its 109 in Phoenix today.  Getting some of that heat up here in Payson but we are typically 20F cooler.

20' went up 15, 5' went up 8.

I had a yoga instructor once say "don't rush to perfect a pose, because I am just going to give you a more difficult one."    I don't want it over estimated (as I know the 20' test can do) and then not be accurate for long course races.

ETA - when i put the numbers and my wieght into Jorge's online calculator it gives me a number about 14w higher than what Shane did.  But with the weight loss I am closer to 3.5 w/kg (altho probably overestimated). I know there was a discussion about getting to 4.0.  I cannot even fathom that number

Did you ask him why ? There are a couple of ways of looking at this. You can use the CP calculator value to measure your progress which BTW is pretty exceptional. 20w at those levels is a lot But maybe your coach sees something in your powerfiles that he wants to set your training levels differently. This is probably not the case for you, but say a coach is seeing that you are falling off at the end of your intervals, he may set your zones a little lower. If he doesn't believe you can do a HIM at 80% of FTP, he may set them lower. I would ask him, I think setting zones and race paces is more an interpretation of testing/training data than use of a fixed formula.

Yeah, I've worked pretty hard this spring.   He said he's waiting to see how today's long ride goes.  But 1 hour at 294?  Yeah, I think that's a little overstated

I'll compose more descriptive, formal thoughts later but it was so, so hard. That's all I have in my head right now. I do feel better after reading the thread though.

Awesome job getting it done today Melissa and Jason. I suppose we would be doing something different if this were easy, right?

X2

I have no words other than that was the hardest race I've ever done. There were no PRs among my training group. Not even close.

I packed it in at mile 5 and did l ot of walking till mile 8.5. It was full on survival mode just to make sure I could finish.

Your last 3 miles were faster than your first three miles. Very impressive effort

Congrats Melissa and Jason! From all reports it was a really tough day out there. Great job and kudos to you both. Look forward to hearing all the gory, bad-azz details when you've recovered enough to share.

I agree. You all trained and prepared well. We can't control the conditions. We can only do the best we can with what we get, and you both hung in there and fought back under miserable conditions. Great job!

I had a pretty good training weekend.  Saturday was a race prep/trial in the form of a 40 min warmup run then 2:20 on the bike at various power levels and then right into another 40 min run with 13' at E pace, 13' at M pace(~4:45/km) and then 14' at T pace (~4:30/km).  The T pace was pretty tough but I felt great at M pace and it felt like a pace I could manage for Mont Tremblant (easy to say now - LOL).

Today I had a run that included 40 mins @ M pace and felt great for that too.  The weekend has given me lots of confidence for the upcoming race.  That said, if the conditions are like they were in Hawaii, I'm screwed!
