I have a Polar F6 which has served me well for almost 2 years. I promised myself I would not spend the bucks on a Garmin until after I finished a full year of tri's, so that will likely be a b-day/christmas present request later this year. What should I get in the mean time. Anyone have any favorites or suggestions as to decent HRMs that work well for you? Thanks. Glen, I really like my Garmin 305...it was actually a very good investment. Have had it now since Dec. 2007 and it has held up well. I think it can be purchased right now for about $155 on amazon. If you are going to get one anyway, it might be better not to spend the extra money on something else during the interim...then it's just a waste. And if anyone is frugal, it is me! btw, I still have my polar F6 from 2006 and use it when I do treadmill workouts or on the bike trainer just for HR info. just sayin. kim i agree w/ kim. great investment. just don't forget to leave it at home once in a while. I heard that advice recently somewhere... ![]() I have the F6 and just got the 305 (actually got it in December but just started using it as the weather has turned nice). I think there is a place for both but if you are limited on budget, go with the 305. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tobey that is funny. I am happy I'm not married to a man like that he would have divorced me in the first year. I am not frugal. Just ask hubby Get the Garmin now and don't expect anything later. I love my toys however I do try and be smart about it and since I bought my Garmin I haven't even touched my HR monitor so it just extra stuff laying around.

Review Pain is low today now that I can move my arm. It is the oddest feeling when your whole arm is dead weight. I feel good, and its not just the pain pills talking. It has been nice trying to stay caught up wiuth the posts, although I could not concentrate for squat last night I love my 310XT.!!!... Anyone interested in my review of it? Check it out..... my310rocksbutitcostsabitofmoneybutitstotallyworthit.com Seriously though Jeff I would love to see a good review on it. I would bet there are tonnes of things on this baby that I don't use or know how to use. Edited by TrevorC 2010-03-10 1:51 PM |

I definitely did the intervals as fast or faster than the last track workout (yes, Tony, Tracy and Suzy, it was a FARTlek workout) but more importantly, I didn't feel like the interval would never end. It was liberating! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The biggest thing about Garmins is that there is so much functionality that you can easily miss some of the functions and never know it. With my bum hand, its difficult to type but will try to cover as much as possible. I was raised by a mother who was very careful about how she spent money, at least on herself, but always treated us kids very well. I learned how to shop around for best prices, and people at work make fun of me when I talk about some of the deals I get. For example, Microsoft has their new search engine at bing.com When ordering online, I often use paypal. Using paypal in combination with bing.com/cashback you can earn cashback. In the past year, I have gotten over $800 dollars in cashback. There are so many retailers that you can sometimes find great deals and get the cashback. We have purchased a high def Sony video camera, lcd tv for the bedroom, SLR camera, some of my bike parts, and random stuff on ebay as well. Just another way to get things cheaper to justify them a bit more. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() HEY ALL!!! It seems like its been forever since I've been able to check in. Life has a way of keeping me busy. I have a question for you half marathoners...How do you determine your race pace? I have been working pretty hard to prep for my first HM on March 28th, but I have no idea how to determine my race pace, or HR range to race at. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Do you know your LT? If so, you should be able to run at slightly below it for the distance and if you feel good the last 1-3m goose it up a bit. What is your tempo pace? AF_SGT - 2010-03-10 8:05 PM HEY ALL!!! I have a question for you half marathoners...How do you determine your race pace? I have been working pretty hard to prep for my first HM on March 28th, but I have no idea how to determine my race pace, or HR range to race at. Sarge, I also wonder if you know what your LT is? If you don't know, you can do it by RPE. When you say you know how fast you can run for an hour, what is that pace and do you know what your aHR is for such an effort? And what is your effort level on a scale of 1-10? Did you notice if your HR started to drift upwards at a certain point during your 13 mile effort this weekend? How did the effort feel to you for that 9:26 pace? Like a 5-6/10? I would imagine your race can be done at close to tempo pace/effort, if you are able to sustain it at an 8-9/10 effort. I ran my half at an RPE of 8-9/10 for the first 11 miles and then went full throttle 10/10 for the last 2 miles. I did not look at pace much after the first 2 miles, because that just seems to screw me up (and stress me out)...but that is just me. My aHR at the end was about 3 bpm under my LT. Which is about 40 points lower than yours btw! ![]() Good luck! kim |

BELIEVE in yourself and the plan. toe the line race morning. and crush it! |

I have this tremendous fear of death (figuratively, not literally) on long efforts. I am beyond conservative. I think it stems from being a distance swimmer for so many years and truly having to pace myself -- the races where I died at the end were ugly. It's only in the last couple of years that I've discovered I have anything remotely resembling speed, thanks to a friend who mentored me into triathlons. She definitely taught me how to race and suddenly I could run an 8:00 mile (or -- gasp!! -- faster!) whereas before I was the queen of the 10:00 mile, maybe 9:00 if I was "pushing it." (Little did I know.) I just cannot imagine running 10-11 mile at that much of an effort! However, my half-mary PR was done with friends who took it out quickly (I cursed them for the entire race -- I did not do my conservative pace and it sucked)... I hung on and did hold that pace (and beat 2 out of the 3 of them!) but to this day swear I will never run like that again. I have GOT to get past that and figure out how the hell to leave it all out there. I guess I need to go out and race a longer race and die -- and see what happens. Cuz so far, for me, it's never happened, for the most part. There's a half mary here in a couple of weeks that my coach is urging me to run. I've told him I don't feel prepared (longer runs have only been around 9-ish miles lately), so he's said I could do the 10K. But maybe I should gut out a half. Decisions, decisions... |

I haven been heading up a new division in the company and am very busy with that so haven't ben able to keep up to date with all my SWBKRUN buddies. I've put in some very long days trying to get this up and running as it is a completely new initiative for the company. I haven't had time to even read any of the previous XX pages so don't really know whats happening. I am still trying to keep up my training but it is difficult finding enough time in the day to get it all in and stay healthy. My first race isn't unitl June so I hope to get lots more training and conditioning in before then. Anywho congrats to everyone on races training etc. Lone Star is getting ever closer and I trust that you are alll well into your training and are ready for it. Take care every one and I'll check in when I can. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow - 2010-03-10 6:57 AM Yoo-Hoo, who's racing this weekend?????? the scoop please! For those of us still on the sidelines let's start working on mental preparation and think about our next race (run, tri or other), what is the number one thing you want to nail? I'm racing this weekend! St Patrick's Day Run for the Helmet 7k. I'm actually going to be using it as the middle part of my long run on Saturday. The race is near where I work so I plan to park there, run the 2+ miles to the start of the race, do the race and then run back to my car. It should get me somewhere near 9 miles for the day. I'd like to beat my time from last year for the race itself (49:11 last year) but don't know if that will happen due to the extra mileage I'm planning. Either way, I plan to have fun and just enjoy the run! |

We just want you to kick some butt, but it is up to you to determine how to do it.... I totally got my butt kicked on this 98/100/102% Lt ride again today....I STG, I need to get some more mental toughness on the bike or borrow Tony's legs for this effort. I am getting killed....and I hate it! Tobey91 - 2010-03-11 9:27 AM kkcbelle - 2010-03-11 10:12 AM fattyfatfat - 2010-03-11 7:48 AM kkcbelle - 2010-03-10 10:07 PM ..... There's a half mary marathon here in a couple of weeks that my coach is urging me to run. I've told him I don't feel prepared (longer runs have only been around 9-ish miles lately), so he's said I could do the 10K. But maybe I should gut out a half. Decisions, decisions... really? i figured your coach would say something more like "you're crying about a half mary marathon and IM is just about 100 days out" good luck with that 10k. ;-) Wow, you guys are a tough crowd. Dude, I wasn't crying about it!!! But yeah, maybe being wussy. The whole context was about pace and HR data, and my argument was that I don't feel like I'm prepared to RACE a half. But I can run one for sure. But the "I can RACE!!!" part of me doesn't want to "just" run one. But I also hate the idea of a HARD 10K. Ick. All right, will lean to the half. Now that I realize it, this is next weekend, LOL! It's a hilly course, too. I've done it once before a few years back. And when you put it that way... running a marathon in 100 days, I guess it's time to suck it up, buttercup. Don't worry about John's comments he hasn't has his coffee yet is just hungover just went off his meds is just jealous is simply doing his best to encourage you. And good luck in the half mary. Don't suppose the weather has broken yet there has it? For me knowing that it's working was good motivation. |

Kyla--I agree with Suzy, do what is best for your training, if your coach thinks you are ready, and gives you a strategy that they think will be right for your training right now, then...well....there you go! I was coming off of marathon fitness and longer runs than 9 miles....doing a 10k is pretty tough, especially since you KNOW you can race that distance without fear of blowing up...so then it becomes...how much pain can you endure! I think if it were me, I would lean towards the 10k and go full out to see what you've got....but since you didn't ask... Whichever you do, I'm glad you will be racing in a few weeks! |
