BigReub - 2010-03-11 10:50 PM I'll be saving some shoe money (and I was on the verge of a new pair of Adidas)...
I'm officially off the road.  After feeling great on my 5 miler this past Sunday...about 1.5 hours later my achilles was a little tender.  Took a few days off, but occsasionally, even walking around the house I got a little "shot"  Today tried a run...I'm out.

Looks like a lot of bike time for me.

Robin's been complaining all week about me being in a pissy mood - now she knows why.

that sucks man.  sorry to hear it.

SSMinnow - 2010-03-11 7:55 PM It depends on the brand for me, but I usually get between 250-300 miles on my Adrenalines.  In the old days,  I was buying shoes every 4-5 weeks.....

Havin'Fun - 2010-03-11 4:52 PM How long/how many miles do you guys put on your running shoes before retiring them?

Found out today my running shoes are way past expired...I've had them 4 months, but have less than 200 miles on them (hangs head in shame).

Edited to add: John killed the mg

I think I generally get about 450-500m on each pair (2 pairs a year) and then I'll even do short or bad weather runs in the old pair.  Like today since it's pouring rain, I will wear my old Brooks for my interval workout.

I have a make do mentality that drives Tony crazy sometimes.  I think it comes from growing up on a farm in the "not the highest of income levels".  Heat and A/C were luxuries.  Neither of which we really had.  LOL  Maybe Tony will share a few of his stories w/ the group for the few years we were together before getting married and he stayed at the farmhouse.

It was a lot like camping...

For me I go about the same as Sam for shoes, there does seem to be a point with shoes where they don't feel the same.  When I hit that point I switch them out.

Another a training note - I had a great swim this morning.  I put the wetsuit on to see if it still fit and see how it felt w/ my new, improved swim stroke.

The result: a 1500m swim in 30min.  I did just over 2min. 100s which is a huge step forward for me.

Its awesome you guys are getting in the workouts.  I have been very lazy letting my wrist heal up.  As tempting as it is to get on the bike and spin for a while.

I normally get 4-500 miles out of a pair of shoes then rotate them to everyday type shoes.  I have difficulties explaining to my other half that just because they look in good condition that they are worn out.

nice swim Sam. But if you did it in 30min's wouldn't it be exactly 2 min/100? Or are you all over the metre/yard thing.
If you came to Canada, you could live up here in a farmhouse without heat, and you'd be faster than you think you are with metre vs yards. Or wait it'd be slower i think.

Farmhouse story- Sounds a little like a garth brooks song to me. Tony throwing haybales...you serving him lemonaid on the porch..Tongue out

Well if you want to get particular my time was 30:27 so 2:02 100s!  Like I said just over 2 min.  ;-)

And we only had a wood stove for heat for most of my childhood.  And that was downstairs.  In the winter, I could see my breath in the mornings.  I think summers were worse w/ just a fan in my window.  I hated 90 degree evenings!

Happychick - 2010-03-11 5:27 PM I'm not racing this weekend but I have pulled my head out of my arse and decided to put things on hold so that I can do some serious rehab on my shoulder and not have to stress during our upcoming move.  With that said, I have decided that this is the year for my first marathon ~ Bellingham Bay in September!

Oooooh fun, Michelle!!! I ran the half the first year they did the marathon. I wasn't trained at all and ran it with a friend who wasn't really a runner to help her finish. We had a great time. I don't know if it was the particular day but the one thing I remember is a ton of wind the last few miles. I hate wind!! But it was beautiful. Bellingham is so lovely!

Sorry to hear about the set-back, Reub. Hope you are on the mend soon.

And I'm probably in the 400-ish mile camp for shoes. Like others, when they just stop feeling good or something else starts hurting, then I switch. I keep about 4 pairs in the rotation at all times (two for road, one exclusively trails, one for either but more waterproof so they're my go-to rain shoes). One of my pairs (Saucony) I noticed this week is ripping out at the pinky toe. The soles seem fine and they feel OK but my toe is pressing out! Odd, as the shoes are pretty wide to begin with. But that meshy stuff at the top is not very rugged!

I need to set up  my shoes in equipment tracker...

People run 400+ miles on shoes?  Wow, mine feel shot around the 200 mark.  I must run heavy.  I wonder if my shoes will last longer now that I have "fixed" my running style with all this therapy.

Reub:

Go to a PT or a good massage therapist. I had a tender achilles and the woman I went to talked to me about my pain and then worked on my calf and then bingo! No pain. Strangest thing but it was terrific!

I'm pretty positive I'm dealing with a stress fracture. I had some general soreness at the top of my foot for a few weeks and then ran a half marathon (yea, not the best idea). During the half it went from a general soreness to sharp, shooting pain every time I met the ground with my right foot. I ended up having to walk most of the last mile and even walking was painful. Since the half, I have not been able to walk without pain and limping and even cycling seems to aggravate it. I saw our family doc (she also believes it's a stress fracture of at least one and possibly 2 metatarsals). She gave me crutches and referred me to a podiatrist who I'll see today. Ugh, I'm not sure what this means for my race season since I have Texas 70.3 coming up in about 6 weeks and IMCDA the end of June. I'm missing a huge amount of training and am afraid I'll be missing even more.

Whatever it means for this season, you will get through it.  From your description it sounds like you did what I did in my half marathon. It hurts, you keep running and then it really hurts. SUCKS.  I think we both learned valuable lessons.  Push for a Bone Scan so they can see exactly what they are up against...an xray won't cut it and an MRI may not be completely definitive.    Keep in touch.  Healing thoughts are coming your way.
