Extreme Veteran 398 Sea Isle City, NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Seems it is getting harder and harder to find a warmup half here in the Philly area. In 08 I did Black Bear in early June and in 10 I raced Jerseyman in late May. Both no longer offer half distance. Bassman still has one but it can be really cold the first week of May and I think it is too early in the training. Was hoping to not have to travel for a half warmup but may have to look at Quassy....or maybe not do one this year. I know its not required but is nice to guage where you are with a month or so of hard training still left. Any suggestions? Again..hoping not to have to travel or travel very far. Good luck with all your training everyone. |

I've done the race several times and it is always well run and staffed. You can check it out at http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=1963. |

Member 75 Huntley, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Thanks for the info! My info is back in the thread somewhere...anyway; I'm a newbie to full IM distance, but have completed one half last summer; been doing mostly Olympics for 6 or so years. I'm going to try to find a half to complete sometime late may/earlyJune. Can't find any early Olympic distances around me--you guys think just one half before IMLP is good enough? |

Pain is part of life. We are all used to it. And I'm just not sure what is wrong with us... I am enjoying this thread.
Happy with my weekend Sat-1hr on trainer doing spinnervals at aerobic, high cadence intervals then ran 4 easy miles Sun-2k with standard 500m warmup (200m=4x50m s/p/k/s; 200m=4x50 d/s; 100 hypo3) followed by 200/300/500/500m swims then 5K race-ran course 3 times-once in warmup; once for the race and once in cooldown for my 9 mile 'long run'-ha!
No pain-only gain. Edited by dtoce 2012-01-08 5:05 PM |

I'm not an expert by any means. I did IMWI last year (my first IM) and an early summer Olympic was my only race prior to the IM. I had planned on an HIM put got injured and was not able to race. I went into Wisconsin with the Olympic distance as the longest that I had completed If a race or two fits in your schedule great, but it's not the end of the world if you can't find something to fit. I think it's more important to follow your training plan and try to be as consistent as you can. |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread asock325 - 2012-01-08 7:29 PM Sorry for all the questions---but do you guys think a half on June 10 is too late? Annie - for me 6 a half IM six weeks out from IM woudl be WAY too close. I am most likely in the minority, but unless you have extreme self control, I would only do a half simply because I wanted to do a half, not primarily as prep for an IM. For me the two are so different in pacing and nutrition that I think there are better ways to prep. I of course lack the mental facility to treat a race like a supported training day. Last year I did a half 9 weeks out, and felt like it took significant time out of the final build to LP. This year I am doing a half 11 weeks prior, but again, not as LP prep, but because I want to race a half. You have to have fun along the way, right?!? I have tried to time it so it will take advantage of my LT work from the late winter/early spring, but still leave time for a proper 8.5 week build/10 day taper. I am not familiar with your plan, but I think if you pinch the time between your scheduled practice race and LP you might regret it. Those are important weeks. You would probably be better without the practice race and interject a couple of sprints or an olympic or two during the summer. Just my opinion - we are all wired differently! |

Member 75 Huntley, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Thanks Rusty--very helpful. My goal this year is really just to finish the race as best I can--but finish is the main thing Maybe I'll get an olympic or 2 in; since this is my first year training for an IM, I don't want to blow my training unnecessarily! Happy training! |

We're usually snow covered and in the single digits right now! Haven't stepped foot on a treadmill and I am very happy about that! Hopefully it doesn't mean a brutally hot summer though... |

I couldn't agree more! this might be the first winter of my life that I don't get to see/spend some time in snow on my runs... but hey, mid 40's in middle january is great!! went out for 18 mile run today to celebrate! now if only I could get my swimming up to that level... |

I am actually quite nervous with the warm weathers. Thats cause Im a weak swimmer and it may be a non-wetsuit swim O_o Ive been checking LP weather and they seem to be in -2C. I ran with shorts on Friday and wore flip flops to swimming on monday night. Never happened in January before. Im up to date with the work outs. Tuesdays are my days off! Happy training! |

I'm probably not going to do a half this year before Placid unless I sign up for Bassman, but if you're willing to drive a little ways, I've heard great things about the White Lake races Setup Events puts on from my buddy Mark. Besides those races and the other ones people have mentioned (Harriman, Kinetic, etc.), there's not much left for Philly people like us to sleep in our own beds. |

Besides those races and the other ones people have mentioned (Harriman, Kinetic, etc.), there's not much left for Philly people like us to sleep in our own beds. I did the White Lake Half in 2006. It was my second race after having done a sprint in the fall of '05. The whole event was top notch -- and now that I've seen other venues and event companies' work -- I can say that it is a good race to do. I don't do it anymore because I moved away from North Carolina and the Kinetic is closer to my new home in Virginia. But, if there is one thing that is superlative about the White Lake race, it is the water. If you love to swim or if you really enjoy freshwater lakes, it is worth experiencing. Crystal clear, calm (the day I was there) sandy bottom and ringed but beautiful trees. As I recall, the course is flat but very well supported by volunteers and fans alike. |

Master 1494 Kingston Ontario | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Name: Jen Ironman Resume: None! Did Timberman 70.3 last year and one other long course tri. Prior to this I did a lot of short course races and in the midst of all of this had a year off due to chronic fatigue syndrome Why did you choose IMLP?: In Kingston, IMLP is THE race to do. A lot of the tri community comes down to spectate and there are always people you know racing each year. It is a party!! It is also a beautiful course and area What are your goals for IMLP?: To finish feeling OK. To not get beaten up too badly in the swim (I am little). To have FUN What are you most looking forward to?: Seeing all the Kingston peeps (and possibly other BTers I know) down there cheering, volunteering and being supportive...making me feel like a rockstar!! Finishing when 3 years ago I didn't know whether or not I would ever race again Edited by keepitup 2012-01-10 8:40 PM |
