Erin did you see THIS?!

Yep

Funny thing is that they've had a 70.3 there for years. Red Rock did a good job. Then LifeTime took it over...and upped the price. Now IM has it and price is double Red Rock's. Will be interesting to see if people think it's worth it.

I'd been hearing a lot of negative thoughts about this one. Mainly regarding the bike course as they were looking to keep it the same. 3 laps of an 18 mile loop with lots of turns and some 180's on it. Then add in MDOT numbers and it was looking like a mess. Advice given was to give it a year first.

If I remember correctly, awhile back they were looking to stretch out the course to get rid of the turns, but that would take them out to rez land and cost $$$. (I'd have to fact check)

Thank you thank you thank you, Melanie.  I needed that today.  I'm trying hard to have a better day than yesterday, focusing on gratitude and compassion toward myself and others.  I started my day with this song written by a friend:

Namaste. I honor the place in you in which the entire universe dwells.  I honor the place in me which is of love of truth of light and of peace.  When you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, we are one.  Namaste.

(((Hugs))) to all.

ETA:  And some cute puppy pictures.

My son really wants a border collie.  We had a long discussion last night about it.

Do you know much about the breed?

I sent the third picture to my wife.  How could one say no to that.

Why?

ha! Not being rude/abrupt, but curious why a border collie? I'm assuming it came up in the discussion.

When we were researching breeds their intelligence and energy appealed to him.  Not sure how this going to play out though.  At dinner tonight, before we got to the subject my wife declared that she wanted to raise chickens.  So focus has shifted for now.  Seemed like a pretty random desire.  We know nothing about chickens and she wants me to build a coup and pen.  I'm more inclined to go with the chickens because if interest fizzles down the road we can just eat them, not so the dog.

Depending on how herdy the BC is, you could always have it herd the chickens.

It's complicated getting to practice without a car plus I was trying to manage my stresses (physical and life) so tomorrow's race should be interesting. But at least I had a relatively good excuse to tell him

I don't know that I am in HM PR shape quite yet so I think tomorrows goal will be to finish really strong, which means good pacing and mental strength. Who else is racing this weekend? I know Steve is!

Can't wait to hear about it!!!

I'm not racing BUT my LR is 15 miles. The furthest I've ever run!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!

Oooh awesome. Going solo? What did you land on for a hydration strategy?

That is hilarious.  I can so see my son training the chickens to do something like that.  Apparently the local feed store has weekly shipments of chicks and they go really fast.  My wife has the arrival schedule and has been reading a "how to care for chickens" book with my son.  This should be very interesting.  We have a lot of racoons in the neighboorhood who I'm sure will be sitting in the bushes licking their chops as we set this up.  Last year's animal adventure was to create a koi pond.  They ate every fish the first night.

I am going solo.  I decided to ease in to cutting back by making the same bottle that lasted 13.1 now last 15.

We had chickens when my boys were younger.  Racoons are a huge issue, molting is gross and makes them look weird, and the rooster used to chase my boys. We used to go to the feed store in the spring to replace the ones who hadn't survived the winter. The boys loved holding the chicks.

Dr. Sophia Yin, the Chicken Trainer, was an amazing dog trainer.  Very successful, we use her book and videos extensively in the program that I teach.  Unfortunately, she committed suicide last year .  I was really grateful that I had the opportunity to meet her and hear her speak.  I don't think I knew she started with chickens.  It makes me laugh a little, cause that is how my SO started her dog training career also--she wasn't allowed dogs when she was young, so chickens it was.  Until her mother cooked one...

So, again my preface here is that I am from a small town...

Anyway, I had two chickens. A hen and a rooster. The rooster was manipulative, crafty, sneaky and MEAN. He would sneak up on me and then charge, using his legs to do this crazy flying leap ninja kick. It was terrifying, and incredibly painful if he got you. He got my dad and gave him a charlie horse.

He would crow really early in the morning (of course) and to shut him up, I would shoot him with my BB gun (only pumping it a couple times.) Just now recalling this, my city life seems so distant LOL

If I don't see you before the race, good luck.  I am sure you are going to smoke it.

My foot is still really sore.  Running this is probably not wise but I wouldn't miss it for anything.  I think my foot would be ok for about 7-8 miles but after that I think it will take a toll.  I thought about just trotting along with my brother but that would mean an extra 30 minutes on my feet and not sure that is the best strategy either.

I'm more inclined to go with the chickens because if interest fizzles down the road we can just eat them, not so the dog.

hehehehe....can you sell your son on their energy and intelligence so everyone is happy?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPrJLkzymhM

That is hilarious.  I can so see my son training the chickens to do something like that.  Apparently the local feed store has weekly shipments of chicks and they go really fast.  My wife has the arrival schedule and has been reading a "how to care for chickens" book with my son.  This should be very interesting.  We have a lot of racoons in the neighboorhood who I'm sure will be sitting in the bushes licking their chops as we set this up.  Last year's animal adventure was to create a koi pond.  They ate every fish the first night.

We had chickens when my boys were younger.  Racoons are a huge issue, molting is gross and makes them look weird, and the rooster used to chase my boys. We used to go to the feed store in the spring to replace the ones who hadn't survived the winter. The boys loved holding the chicks.

OMG I so needed this laugh!  Thank you!  Haiiiiiii ya!

ETA:  I can just see this crazy chicken flying through the air, and then crazy-eyed Salty pumping up her gun!!

Gosh, you about nailed that description.

Haha! After recalling that and then writing it, I can't believe I am talking about myself. Haha! Maybe you CAN take at least a bit of the small town out of a girl...

That's exactly what our rooster did with our boys. Didn't do it with DH or I though. Maybe we were too big for him to take on. Ours crowed ALL. DAY. LONG.

I can't imagine WTC volumes on an 18 mile loop.  That is way too much congestion and I think there are going to be a lot of accidents.  Too bad as I'd love to do a 70.3 there.  Phoenix is like a second home to me.  One of my favorite places.

It might not be set just yet. I've heard there is a closed FB group with some knowledgeable guys in there discussing this. I'm not actually planning on this regardless of what they come up with, but thought to pass it along.

I could definately see her doing that.

The Ken Block videos are amazing.  He has done a whole series of those.

You guys are a terrible influence! I'm trrrrying to be economical!

That Ken Block video is out of control. Man, that indeed, looks outrageously fun. Also I can't stand segways. I would have definitely run him over

Haha! I did have all these same thoughts way back when, but largely managed to keep everything in check. Really getting into racing was looking too expensive in a number of ways and while going fast in the car does give a rush it wasn't as nearly as fulfilling when a motor does it vs when I was the motor. For some crazy driving, there are some gas powered go-kart places around here too.

I did manage to resist going for the turbo (a big thing being this was way back when it was the 2.0L vs the 2.5), and that difference later covered the race bike. My little brother went the VW route with the GTi and was really wishing for a race bike much more than I ever wanted a faster car.

Yeah, I won't be getting into racing. I used to do a lot of 4-wheeling when I was younger (remember, I'm from a small town!) and I know how expensive playing with cars as if they are toys is. Boy do I have some stories...

I'm a huge fan of the GTI. I love VW. But the hatchback just doesn't have the room the WRX did. It also doesn't have awd. And finally, the WRX is faster. Not that I really weighed that in though. I had also toyed with a golf TDI. J has a golf so it might have been a little too hers and hers

That just might be! Once the 2nd kid was coming in my brother traded the GTI in for a used Audi A4 wagon. I had given these all a good look too, but didn't want to spend for them. This brother has always been the more image conscious one.

Same! I eyed the A4 wagon a long time actually (specifically the diesel). It would have been one of those situations you described where I had to compromise some of my other fun stuff for the spend. And ultimately my plan is to get the 30K Tesla when it is out (once I can get a slightly used one) so I couldn't quite justify dumping too much into a car right now.

Good luck everyone racing.  Sending healing vibes to Yanti and Spanky.

Sean, I'm really curious how you are going to pace this 10k after the last one.  I assume you are going to go out faster, just be careful.  There is something to be said about finishing those last miles strong.  Can't wait to hear how it turns out.

My Chicken Story ...

Growing up, we had a house in the mountains (volcanoes) that ring Jakarta (you just can't see 'em for the pollution but they're there). It was very farmsy, plenty of land (heck, even a fireplace) and fish and chickens. We often went there on weekends and holidays and would usually bring one of the Dobermans. Our huge (oversize for competition!) male Dobe, his first time up ... thought that chasing the rooster would be fun. I saw them disappear around a corner like Roadrunner and Wiley Coyote.

A moment later, a very large and very terrified Doberman in full flight comes back around the corner with the rooster hot on his tail

I do know how to slaughter, pluck, dress and cook chickens. It was also Mutti who taught me how to shoot rifles. She's a very good hunter (all her brothers too, one was a professional hunter and game-meat butcher). Gatherers, too. It's really hard and really critical to know which plants, roots, and mushrooms (among many lookalikes) you CAN eat! Kept them alive during severe rationing in WWII.
