Hi gang. No racing this weekend for me. It's my 30 anniversary so my wife and I are going  to light up the town on Saturday. Sunday may be a tough swim workout.

Overall I would say that I have improved overall in all three disciplines and I attribute this to working with the Guleph Tri Club.  Working out with them has given me enough of an added incentive to do better.

Doug:  good luck on that marathon.

Yeah Doug good luck this weekend, I know you have been putting in a lot of time on the training for it, kick some butt.

I might have a 5k this weekend but just running it with a friend so lol I might run 30 mins before + 5k then 30 mins after to get in my 90 minute run I need to do.

Met with my coach yesterday I told him my workouts were good so he made my workouts harder this weekend, how is that fair?

Also kind of bummed that he told me I shouldn't be doing group rides as my long rides since they don't match the riding style, which makes sense but I like doing the group rides.

TrevorC - 2010-03-16 4:47 PM So I went out for an easy 30 minute run at lunch. Felt kind of blah, but figured I should. Bike class tonight, so was going to take it easy. Ran under 6 min/Kms(10min/miles) for 4miles. For me, a really good pace. Not race pace, but faster than I have been running lately. Funny how that happens.....

And whats this basketball touney you are all talking about?

I was going to answer your b-ball question but I hate being more gullible than I already am, so I'm going on the assumption you were using the sarcastic font. You have heard of the college NCAA national championship tournament right?

Seriously, great job on the run.  Those are the best days.

I did the italics but omitted the red font. I wanted to see who would be first to ask if I was serious. Was guessing Suzy, but you work as well. I do live under a rock here in Canada, but we do get some US programming.
Wait til you get up here Tracy. Heat, running water, No dogsleds....Only problem will be trying to do an OWS in pentiction in August. Hopefully the ice will be off the lake by then.Cool

jvanis - 2010-03-16 7:05 PM Nice work Suzy.

Thanks for the suggestions with barefoot.  I have been doing some of the prework (doing other barefoot activities etc)  I will start toning back my runs at first and not do the 3 mile run again for a while.  Mostly looking to get some long term fixes for sore knees but want to make sure I am going the right way.

so are you running barefoot or are you running in your vff's?   kinda confused after your earlier post  " The catch... I did it barefoot in my Vibrams."  and the one above.

kelly's link describes the difference's pretty well.

I did the run in the VFFs.  Need to read some more on the webpage.  I have been mid/forefoot running for a while now, still get some soreness in my calfs, but will be working on both the VFFs and along with the ChiRunning techniques for the long run.

Best of luck to you Doug.  I'll be there cheering everyone on, cowbell in hand.  Maybe I'll even make a sign.  What are some great signs people have seen during races that really helped?   We've already got the Tie a Knot idea, any others?  The race is called the Tobacco Road Marathon and is run on the American Tobacco Trail.  I would love something witty about needing a cigarette or something.

Doug - you will do great in your race...your prep has been great.  Good Luck!

No race here.  Plan is for a 13 mile run either Friday afternoon or Saturday depending on what the forecast looks like.  This weekend my kids are with my in-laws so my wife and I are planning some quality time.  Head up to our cabin Friday night, either ski (unlikely) or run and hike on Saturday, hang out Sunday morning and then head to some spa she has booked for Sunday night.  Should be a great weekend!

As for most improved...probably my swim.  Have seen my times drop :05+/100 and feeling really good about the improvments.  Spent more time than I have in the past working on hard effort swims with longer rest...not just going for the endurance swims all the time.  Also think I improved my stroke some but I haven't had anyone evaluate that so not sure.

On the run, I concentrated much more this off season on slowing the pace to build my base.  We will see if that pays off in the coming months.

The bike...well, not sure I improved too much there.  Have spent the least amount of time there and typically don't have too much of a plan on what I will do so that will probably be next off season's focus area.

I'm racing again this weekend.  Just a local 5k - put on by the rec center where I work out.  My goal is to finish in under 30 mins which I think is very doable since it's a flat course and I run it alot for training runs so I'm very familiar with it.  Of course, the weather is supposed to be pretty crappy (even a possibility of snow flurriesFrown), but I've run in worse so not a big deal really.

Doug - good luck with your race this weekend!

Also good luck to anyone else who may be racing!

So I talked it over with my wife last night and I am going to do the National Half Marathon this weekend, assuming I can still enter.  The online entry is closed, but they said they are reserving about 1000 spots for people who have not yet registered who show up the the expo to register (and pay an extra $15).  So I am hoping to get one of those spots.

Strategy is not to go out too hard, and keep my own pacing such that I can negative split.  Doing a negative split will be difficult because the second half of the course is quite hilly.  But That is my thinking.

I think I have gained the most in the pool and also a good amount on my run.  I (up until my wrist injury) have made good progress in the pool working on technique and being more aware of my position in the water.

Running as well has become easier to sustain faster paces which came from building a solid base.

My biggest helper was being consistent in the off season, I did not get every scheduled workout, but made almost all of them.  I am anxious to get back outside and see how my bike goes. I will hit nearly 1000 miles on the trainer this winter, and do not feel as strong as I would like.  A proper fitting is going to have to be in the near future, still having discomfort after tinkering with my saddle dozens of times.  I am debating going to a Cobb saddle and seeing how that feels.

You know what I love?  Posting early in the morning and then coming back to find all sorts of cool stuff to catch up on with the MG!.....nice job on all the learnings in the offseason.

Doug--you have worked very very hard and learned a lot about yourself along the way.  I like your strategy of starting off moderately and building into it.  That last 10K is really a test of wills.  When it gets ugly dig deep and know it will soon be over.  You have shown you are tough enough to do it.

Tony--Steve told me the same thing about riding with even one person.  My goal is to do some of my easier Z2 stuff with a couple of my gal pals, but the Tempos and harder long rides will be solo. Sorta sucks, right?

Paul-it looks like you have a sound strategy....just know to be flexible if weather or other unforeseen issues arise.  Your training has looked great over the last few weeks/months!

Jeff--you people that use the Vibrams kind of freak me out.  I know there have been some studies done on them, but I dunno....I am a skeptic!

Birdy-not sure exactly how you found that pic of John, but I like it!  Glad to see you back on the board. I've missed your banter and enthusiasm.

Me, I survived my first blind LT ride and liked the ability to be in control of the gearing vs riding a prebuilt MRC file.  It wasn't easy and honestly my quads hurt about as much as they do after a marathon, but I did reasonably well.  We'll see what the boss says when he reviews the files.  I'm done for the day and am thankful for it!

I'm "racing" this weekend.  I use the "racing" term very lightly...

Saturday I am pacing my best friend from high school in a 8k.  Hope to keep her running the whole time and under an 11 min mile pace.  She only took up running Dec of '08 when I told her I wanted to come to VA Bch and run a marathon in '09.
I ran that marathon in '09 & she ran/walked the 1/2...not bad for a girl that was never athletic and had never run before Dec '08.  Anyway, the 8k will be a total blast...hope our legs keep up with our mouths.

Sunday I am running the marathon.  I say that hestitantly since I really have no training to speak of, but am totally in it for fun.  Pretty sick idea of fun, but I've done sillier things in my life.

Saw the dr this am.  He gave me clearance to run this weekend.   Said the feet are probably not a result of my running, but did kind of get on to me for waiting until now to see him.  But I reminded him today is Wed, I could have waited until Friday on my way out of town to see him    Anyway, starting the drugs and boot today ... so the fun is still on.

Hope everyone has the best St Patrick's Day ever!

Devils advocate....why shoot for a negative split if the last half of the course is the most challenging?  This is just my opinion, but when I have done halfs and fulls, the course plays into my decision on how I will run it....I knew full well for Boston the back half would be slower because there are 5 miles of hills starting at the 19m mark and tried to pace myself appropriately in the upfront knowing full well I would slow down towards the end....just food for thought!
