Totally serious.  I used to dance like the dude in the skin tight suit.  Not that I need to share this, but I won a dance contest my freshman year of college....picture this...4'10" me, slightly skinnier on a diving board in a purple bikini, stone cold sober in Dayton Beach Florida....got to drink free the entire night at some pick up joint for the prize.

If you're racing, raise your hand high and tell us the details....and please include your strategy.   Now that we are getting into the season your thoughts could help others.

For the rest of us slackers, where do you think you've improved most in the off season and what did you do differently to get there?

I don't think I ever had an "off season". :-)  This week regarding to my tri training has been GREAT! This weekend however, I'm going to start pulling my hair out because finals is coming up and I am just so overwhelmed with all the projects that I have to do. This quarter has really taught me that my time management sucks. I'm am an "A" student, but I hated this quarter that I'm sucking it up as a "B" student.  It is what it is, and I can't dwell on it or will put myself down if I don't get as good marks as I wanted it to be. No one is going to hate me if I got a B. The world isn't going to stop because I got a B, hell, it's not going to stop if I got a C. :-) Even with if I get low marks, I will still get a 3.8 GPA overall. So I'm happy with that. My goal is to graduate with honors (I want to wear those golden tassels. LOL!).  This is just one of those quarters where I'm just seriously overwhelmed by everything/everybody. I'm hoping that next quarter will be slightly better.

Good luck to everyone this weekend!!

Holy hell I think I drank too much green beer yesterday! Money mouth However, I did learn to dance a "slip jig" so it was worth it.

Good luck to everyone who is racing this weekend!!! Booyah! Kick some serious butt then come back and tell us all about it! I LOVE hearing all of your stories - they always inspire me, and I learn things from you guys, too!! This group has been instrumental in my training, learning, progress, and motivation. I just want to give you all a big hug!!

Oh, and the pics are cracking me up. Birdy, I about died when I saw the pic of Doug pushing the Guinness can up the hill. Hehe...

I did run another PR today Laughing Running still sucks, and it hurts, but I'm getting used to it. Speaking of hurting, I have a pain in the front of my left shin that radiates around and down into the inside of my calf. What could this be? Is it a shin splint? Should I see a doctor? If so, should I see a sports medicine doctor?

Also, I'm becoming really nervous about Lonestar. I'm starting to think that I can't do it. Just running the 5Ks are wearing me out....and the mini sprint was challenging....and I don't want to let my family down....and I feel like a dork when I'm running. I'm riddled with self-doubt! What's up with that? I usually just barrel through things and think about them afterward. Maybe it's traveling so far to do something so new to me? Help?

I have no excuses to not succeed. I have been training consistently since early December. In terms of time management: I work out of my home office for half a day, and I have every afternoon/evening/weekend free. My son is in college. My husband is a neat freak so the house stays clean. Overall, I'm healthy (but still losing weight), used to sports competition, and LIKE to do new things. I just don't get what's wrong....

Steve, nothing wrong with Suzy's Ipod choices...were you referring to Lady GaGa????
Love her stuff.

I used Pink's Funhouse this morning to get me through my 30' bike TT and it was AWESOME!  Not sure if the BeeGees could have helped much, but Barry was my favorite!

I raised my average watts a few notches since January.    But I also gained a few lbs, so maybe it is negligible?
^^is that the right spelling?

Anyhow, happy thursday to everyone!

HEY!  Who is the new hottie in your avatar!

No need to worry...just look at your logs!  The good thing is your are going to have a huge support group beyond your family with all the MG folks going there.  Plus you're giving us a new PR almost daily!!

You could try a few brick traning sessions over the next few weeks.  Do your ride, get off the bike and transition to the run (at the speed you expect to do it in your race) and then go out and run for 15-20 minutes.  No need to do the whole 5K...just enough so that your legs feel comfortable under you after getting off the bike.  Also, no need to do too many of these, just two or three before your race.

You will be fine...YOU ARE GOING TO KICK BUTT!!

No, No, a thousand times NO! You are coming to Lonestar, you will finish that race and you will have fun.  This first one has to be all about the process, not the time.  Break each piece down into very small maneagable parts....use the transitions to settle yourself down and talk yourself through the next event.....this is a pep talk for you, but partly for me too.  We all at times have self doubt....I have already done a HIM and still worry about the damn swim...what if I can't do it? what if I panic? what if someone kicks me? why did I sign up for an early race???  You and I really have to find it in ourselves to be the strong, triathletes we both want to be.....it really is that simple. Start talking to yourself daily and only with positive messages....we have a race to do!

PS I agree with George.  Who the heck is that lady in the avatar.....hubba hubba!

I leave the injury/pain question to someone more knowledgeable.  I am but a newbie in comparison to others on this forum [Suzy - don't flame me], but I will give my 2 cents:

I rowed in college.  On the bow (front) of the boat there is a small ball called a bowball about the size of a tennis ball that is soft and is meant to protect the bow from hitting/spiking something.  Races were usually 2000 meters long.  My coach would routinely say that each workout was the equivalent of a single bowball, and if you string enough of those together, you get the full 2000 meters.

We all experience doubts.  (I certainly do, and anyone who says they don't is lying to you.)  But, for me, I rely on the process to know I can do it:  Your ability to do it is based on your training.  When I get to the race, I repeatedly say to myself that my training got me here and my training is the thing that will get me through.  And every training session before that, I think that this is what will get me through.

And (finally) coming to my point, you are doing really well in your training.  You seem to be pretty consistently putting in something like 150% of the training time you are scheduled to in your plan.  You are doing great.  Just keep it up, and know that you will rely on that in the race.   Crossing the finish line will be fantastic.

And just so you can see what I looked like in college, here are my roomies and me right before we went to the dorm Halloween party.....and yes, that was the Brownie uniform I wore when I was seven....I think I was a fat kid.

TOTALLY!!! I think it's good to be a B student from time to time... as long as you're balancing that with something else, right??!! And that you are (not to mention you've been fighting the crud for awhile -- boo!! go away bad germs!). Keep up the great work!

Time managment for sure. Holy crap! I am totally falling into that. I had my coach set up my schedule so that I'd do my training in my nooks and crannies of "unscheduled" time, trying very hard not to lose precious family time (i.e. no long workouts on weekends). It's all been going great. Only now I'm racing on my rest day (Sunday), which made next week's schedule a bit off. No worries, I figured out the solution. Then realized I have a dentist appointment at 1:30pm on next week's new long bike/run day. When I scheduled the appointment (yes, with IM training in mind), I purposefully put it on the long run day, knowing I'd be done with my run in time. Now everything is all off. Arrrrrgh! Guess what's gonna give?? It ain't the training, that's for sure, LOL! My crown replacement will just have to wait until it fits back into IM schedule!

SUZY: I LOVE your pep talk and daily looks at the positive. It is so easy to let self-doubt creep in when we aren't looking. It's been doing it to me all week. Today I gave it the big, fat finger and crushed it. Hope to keep it at bay for awhile again...

George, Suzy, Tobey -

Thanks for the inspiration. I am just going to have to learn to trust the process. I mean....how bad can I actually be if I've been training adequately? It's not like my legs are going to fall-off or I'll forget how to swim or anything, right? Agh...just need to keep telling myself these things.

George, thanks for the brick suggestions. I'm going to do a few more before the race as you suggested. I've done a couple before, but it's been over a month ago. And Suzy - WOW! You have some great advice there in stating that it is about the process and not performance. I will use my transitions as a time to calm myself, visualize the next leg of the race, and psyche myself up for it. I DO want to be a strong triathlete - and I want it BAD. Finally, Tobey, thanks for the "tennis ball" story/allegory. I guess it is safe to say that race days are the culmination of all the training.

Oh, and that's me in the pic after a few green beers and a slip jig dance Kiss

Good luck to everyone this weekend!!

a 3.8 and you're concerned!?! don't let it bother you!  b's are great.  think of getting that golden tassel similar to finding a golden ticket.  as a professor and a boss or if i ever own a chocolate factory, i'll take a charlie over an augustus or a veruca or a violet any day.  heck, in many cases i'll take a 3.0 over a 4.0.

you're on the quarter system?  interesting.

and if you're reading this get off BT and go get your work done!  now!

ha!  you were adorable!   but didn't grow much more.

SSMinnow - 2010-03-18 3:30 PM Do you seriously think I would post a picture of that?  How about this one instead...it was my first swimming suit.  I think maybe I was 2 years old......and no I wasn't full grown back then....but look at that tummy!

And just so you can see what I looked like in college, here are my roomies and me right before we went to the dorm Halloween party.....and yes, that was the Brownie uniform I wore when I was seven....I think I was a fat kid.

You saw that as well John?  I was going to say--- There doesn't appear to be much height difference between the 2 pictures.  I agree with you there.

Copied this from my training log cus I'm lazy:

Stress fracture confirmed, but not as bad as originally thought. Woo hoo! It was like having a whole new pod today. I think I caught him off guard last visit since he isn't used to dealing with athletes. New instructions... 4 to 6 weeks in the boot, swimming, aqua jogging, and cycling with low resistance are OK, use pain as my guide and back off if there is ANY. Texas 70.3... aquabike is OK. He said he couldn't really tell me when I'd be able to get back to running, I would be able to judge that better than him. He thinks I risk a setback if I tried to run the 70.3 though.

I am pretty good at listening to my body, so we'll see where I'm at in 5 weeks. My plan is to do my planned swims, use aqua jogging to replace the running on my plan, and bike on the trainer with low resistance until I'm pain free. If I can get back to a run/walk by Texas 70.3 I will do the run and drop if I have any pain in my foot. I'm feeling much better about my racing prospects!
