Quick question: I'm riding an aluminum frame bike with carbon forks and Tiagra group set, I bought it last September as my first road bike since I was 17!Anyway, it's now the start of a new season and my cycling fitness has improved a bit so can I justify upgrading to a full carbon bike with ultegra or should I just keep going on my current bike?

LOL you can always justify a new bike, because the amount of bikes you should have is n+1.

Are you looking at a tri-bike or a road bike?

If you're riding a road bike now and upgrading to a nicer road bike your gains will be negligible other than the satisfaction of owning a new cool shiny bike (nothing wrong with that at all)

If you're thinking about getting a tri-bike your gains will be better but still not earth-shattering.  Though again nothing wrong with wanting a new bike just to want one.

So I say yes you can justify it if you can afford it : )

First Cyclocross race of the season, with all this rain we're having it's going to be a complete mudfest.  Looking forward to seeing if all the racing I've done this year on the bike pays off.

Scratch that, just got an e-mail that they are moving the race to January since we've had too much rain and they didn't want to tear up the park.

Want to throw this out to the group.  I have a few things that I would like to get my hands on for my first off-season; a trainer, a hr monitor, and the total immersion swim program.

If any of you are upgrading and need someone to buy your extra stuff, let me know.

P.S. I've been watching the classifieds here on bt, but haven't been able to lay my hands on any of these things yet.  Usually, I'm too slow! lol

Trainer's will be tough to buy online, they're going to be super expensive to ship, probably better to look at craigslist for local pickup.   What kind of HR monitor are you looking for Garmin Forerunner 305's are super cheap now, you get HR and GPS functions which is nice when you want to know your pace while running.

And I have a Total Immersion book somewhere, I can send you for free if you want it, I just have to figure out where it is.

While it is not an Ironman or even a half, I am doing the White Lake Olympic on 9/10. Simply hoping to improve on last years time.

Jayne,

I think the Swim Smooth stuff is better in the long run.  I have some of the TI stuff - give me a day or two to dig them out and I'll let you know what I have.  If you do want to go that route, I will be happy to send to you the next time I am in the US (early Oct).

Very cool. And really it has been years. At least 3 years right?

You should get to the airport and have Paul standing there dressed up in a suit with a "TOM" cardboard sign ala limo driver.

I have the same frame with the 105 group set.  I recently changed my helmet (Rudy Project), front wheel (SRAM S60) and rear wheel (DT Swiss wheel with powertap and Wheelbuilder Aerojacket disc covers).   I decided it was better to spend my money on that set of changes rather than a full carbon tri-bike.   If. after doing my first HIM on Sep 18, I decide I'm going to try more HIMs or an IM, I will start looking into the full carbon tri-bike.   The things I just bought can carry over.

The powertap is a tool I plan on using this winter to improve my cycling performance, i.e. it didn't help in this race.  I believe the other items did help.

I have my first triathlon this Saturday.  Since it's a sprint, I am hoping to finish faster than Suzy or Kim's IM times.  Key components of my race strategy involve not drowning and avoiding wrong turns that might put me somewhere in Alabama.

Good luck ladies!!!!

Seconding the good luck wishes.  I know you've prepared, so the luck is only in regard to those things outside of your control - mechanicals, weather, idiots, etc.

I also think it's cool that you're meeting for the first time at an IM.  I don't know if the state of WI can handle that kind of excitement!!
