Aikidoman - 2009-09-14 5:46 PM Of course there is that chance in every race, but what about a race that the chances are good you won't/can't finish due to difficulty?  Do you actually attempt something that chances are you can't do?

I guess I want to try it because maybe I CAN do it and surprise myself.

Would you give it a shot or wait and get better prepared?

i'm too cheap to pay for a race i'm not sure i can do.

Like I said, I spend more money on a night of drinking in this town...  50 bucks only gets you about 3-4 drinks on the strip

I have never gone into a race thinking I would or even could DNF.  Have I DNF'ed?  Of course.  But not thinking it was a possibility at the beginning.

If I want to do a race I sign up for it.  Then I simply put out the best effort that I can that day.  If I cannot finish for some reason, then so be it.  But it is going to have to take a really good reason for me to drop out.

Yes, for me, but I guess in bike racing it's different as often the DNF isn't my choice. Sometimes it is though, but the objective is to win, so if I have no hope of winning at some point, then a DNF is fine. And sometimes I go into a race knowing that my competition is going to be tough and there is a good chance that I'll DNF.

For the race you are talking about, yeah, I would sign up. I guess, I don't really know what you have to lose.

I agree that if it was a running race (or even swimming) I would take a pass.  But this is a mtn/hill climb event on the bike.

I guess I try to justify that it's low impact and I can quit when I want/need to.  It's basically a 6% climb for 17.5 miles with max grades of about 11%.

I know I could grind it out on my MTN bike with all the easy gears, but worry about trying it on my road bike...

For that type of thing, just HTFU and do it.

I signed up for the Marathon a month a go when I thought I may DNF due to not able to catch up with the training plan.

I did that on purpose.  Suddenly marathon training become my priority.  Forget about all the the bike / swim and sport I am interested in.  Forget about my other hobbies, forget about TV or even my normal schedule.  Marathon training first!

Now I have much more confidence to "unDNFed".

No.  Actually, I don't even like to sign up for a race that I think I'll be DFL, even though they say DFL > DNF > DNS.

Let's see, you have x number of miles in on the bike this year, you are training for Silverman, and you have done Mt Evans, you can do it!!!

Why risk injury this year just to puff your pride and say you finished when next year you could train right and easily finish or even push the pace and race rather than merely finish.  I am a nOOb at this tri-thing, but racing merely to "maybe" finish when undertrained seems very dangerous when there is always next year and 365 days to get ready.

I am training for the Climb To Kaiser a 155 mi ride with 14,000 ft of elevation gain. This will be my first attempt and while I'm sure I can finish I don't know I will. A good friend of mine has tried twice. This year he had a cold and missed the time cutoff for the highest checkpoint by minutes and got turned around. The year before he got 9 flats and missed the cutoff. Great riders have abandoned the important races. Finishing is never a certainty.

If you had a chance to race in the TdF, but didn't think that you could finish?

I guess I like to sign up for difficult things to test my own limits.  If I KNEW I could not finish, I wouldn't start, but just the possibility of not finishing does not scare me.  Besides, no one would think someone like me could do it any way.  So I have nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying it.  I guess I'm not afraid at failing at attempting something that most people can't do anyway (without risking injury, of course).

Welcome to my world.

Enjoy your race

To each his own, but if I didn't think I had a chance to finish I wouldn't enter it.

If you want to ride the mountain, then ride it, but not during a race.

As far as the t-shirt, I wouldn't wear a shirt from a race I didn't finish, getting a shirt for your $50 wouldn't be an incentive to me.

If you think you can finish, but you're not 100% sure, then go for it.  Its good to give yourself a challenge.  If you don't think you will finish it, or have not plans to finish then no.

Now where is the challenge in that

To each his/her own, but to me, anything worth doing is worth doing well, DFL/DNF is not good enough for me, not to say I've never DNF'd, and I did make an exception when I sign up for the Worlds even though there was a distinct possibility I'd be DFL.

Quick update...

Finished the race and never really suffered and actually held my own, more or less...  It was a great day for racing and a good event.  I'm glad I took the chance on a race with unknowns.  I never had any doubt about finishing if nothing too squirly popped up on the course (obscenely steep pitches, strong head winds, or a mechanical) - and of course, nothing did.

My theory is, life is too short to always play it safe.  I'm not afraid of failing at something difficult if I did the best I could.  It feels good to step outside your comfort zone and succeed.  Or simply jump into the unknown.

Now that it's behind me, I know it wasn't worth the worry.  But I didn't know that up front.

I most definately would. Think about it if you don't finish you will probably learn something from it. I am a huge proponent of learning from past mistakes and this would be a great chance to do so. Plus what would be more humbling then pulling out of a race and realizing you were not ready/under prepared for/etc. I think that would really fuel the fire to my training.
