I had to be at work at 9:00am yesterday, so I was up pretty early.  Got to watch the end of the men's 15km biathlon (not entirely sure about the distance).  It was a really exciting race - especially at the end!  I wish they would broadcast more sports like that.  I am tired of watching figure skating and some commentator learn how to slalolm from Picabo Street.  More coverage of actual sports.  Plus, we got coverage pulled from the Olympics for the past two Saturdays for NASCAR.  What is that!?!?

like other people said before, the CBC is also super canada-centric.  only natural, so i watch it when i get tired of hearing about americans .

my olympic moment was 1988, janet evans winning the 800m free.  i remember making up a song about her and singing it to myself as i went to sleep that night.  somehow the song became also about america in general and so my song was about janet evans and abraham lincoln.  haha.

Have you noticed that some of the bob-sledders are kind of.. er.. chubby? I could see their beer gut bulging through the spandex.

Heavier weight goes faster when sliding downhill.  It has the potential to be another fat man's sport.  Like being a golfer.  Or baseball pitcher.  If Nascar guys didn't have to climb in the window, they'd be fat too.

Any of you watch Jacobellis in the women's snowboard cross fall near the end because she tried a board grab just before the finish? Cost her the gold. It's a tough way to learn that you never hotdog, no matter how much you think it's in the bag.

For her sport it was the biggest moment on the biggest stage and that's a tough time to learn that you don't talk the talk if you can't walk the walk.  A small part of me felt bad for her but more of me wondered if she got what she deserved.  What an exciting race!  That one girl who shot off the curve and through the fence?  Crazy!  That's a sport I could watch over and over again.  Although it might be more fun if the contact was more encouraged.  They could even carry sticks.  Snowboard Cross Jousting!

It's a pretty amazing sport, combines a good dose of luck with lots of skill. The girl who shot straight off the curve is a firefighter in a municipality adjacent to where I live.

I feel bad for the girl who tried to get fancy, but then again, when I was a kid, I was told you don't hotdog because it humiliates the people that you are competing against.

I can't remember which year, or where or even which race, but that summer games when the runner got hurt and his dad came out of the stands to help him across the finish line.

Crazypop - 2006-02-18 8:13 PM THIS YEARS OLYMPIC MOMENT> Canadian Skier breaks ski pole. A few strides later a NORWIEGEN(SP) coach hands here a new one. Thus ensuring a medal for the Canadians! Thats what its all about!

I agree, but just to add a little cynicism to the moment -- the pole was too long!  Renner cooked up that hill with a break in her pace!  It was an awesome moment.

I don't know,  the snowboard mindframe seems to be go big or go home.  Playing it safe, being conservative just doesn't seem to fit the snowboard culture.  She did what she did - she's a young, very good snowboarder, it was the natural reaction, I think.

I guess she was not as good as she thought! I'll bet you she'll never do that again, in the Olympics or any other race.

I think folks ought to give the poor girl a break. Her explanation on NPR suited me just fine. She said she did it for fun. She was having a blast and that's why she does it. So she blew it royally... that's her issue and hers alone.

Doesn't matter the sport, if you want to WIN, go big or go home. Playing it safe only works if the outcome is predetermined.

Oh, I agree. I don't buy into this "win a medal for your country" stuff. You do it for yourself. I'm just saying, I know that she wanted to win, and she never would have done the grab if she felt the outcome was in question i.e. if there was another racer within 20 feet of her.

In any case, she is the only one who suffers as a result, and if she can get over it, everybody else certainly can.

Likewise, I don't completely agree with the "do it for yourself" only approach.  If that were the only consideration, why do we put so much emphasis on the Olympics?  Wouldn't an X-Games be just as intriguing if it were all about the individual?

I think it's fun to support a team, and it's fun that they come from your country, but I would hesitate to say that it carries any real importance. On the other hand, the importance that winning at the Olympics has is the importance that we, as people, media and government give it. If we believe it's important, then it becomes important. And this can start a whole bunch of discussions regarding government investment in elite sport, national self-image etc...

On a related note, I got a kick out of the Swiss hockey team beating the Canadians. It's that underdog thing.

Doesn't this remind you of the moment in one of the cycling races where the cyclist in first place celebrated too early?.

This is her job. Just like it is Barry Bonds job to go out and hit homers(between steriod treatments) and Peyton Manning to throw touchdowns. Her transportation, food and board and training are being paid by the USOC who is funded by the government, private donations and corporate donations. She is also responsible to her sponsors who expect her to give her best performance.

Yes it does.  It reminds me too of the football player that ran an 80+ yard return, started his celebration dance at the 7 yard line, and fumbled at the 4 yard line, losing the ball to the other team.
