I think we all need to calm down a little. It doesn't do you (DerekL) or anyone else any good to offend people; you never know who you might need someday.

If anyone has the right to qualify what a "medical professional" is in this context, it's the original poster, not DerekL.

If you have a different view of a medical professional, then please state it. Let us know that you define "medical professional" differently and tell us the definition/distinctions. Please don't insult parrj, athletic trainers, or anyone else. Maybe you didn't intent insult, but it certainly has come off that way.

Best,

Tom

DerekL - 2006-03-06 7:52 PM

Nobody accused you of doing so, and I said nothing remotely close to what you're implying. I didn't knock your profession as I've already stated.

I think the term medical PROFESSIONAL is quite a bit less inclusive than you do. Lots of people are in the medical field. Most of them are not professionals.

parrj - 2006-03-06 6:48 PM DerekL, I am not disrespecting anything you do. I had no desire to do it myself. But if you are saying that only doctors are medical professions, then you are discounting a lot of professions. PA's, EMT's, anesthesiologist assistant, audiologist, dentist, and the list goes on and on. Don't go knocking someone elses profession, when you have no idea what it involves.

My last word...promise

...with great attempts to maintain professionalism, buffering my union and political activism that goes along with my current position, with my advocate role...

as per wikipedia: "Medical professional in its broadest sense denotes a person involved in a skilled medicine or health related occupation"

Personally, a medical professional is one who practices medicine, reserved for MDs. Again, I state that the implied intent of this post was for health professionals, and although only Colomingle can attest to this, it appears to have been implied, by the nature of responses.

Therefore, DerekL is a medical professional, and although by some definitions, parrj can lay claim to being a medical professional, he remains nonetheless a legitimate health care professional, deserving of no less respect than anyone else who responded in good faith to this post.

I reafirm my previous post: " I have great respect for (dedicated, civilized, caring, collaborative) MDs.

I didn't mean for this thread to become a hot button debate.  I see a medical professional as any health care professional who practices their medical skills in one way or another.  I just wanted to add my profession and see what everyone else did for a living.

okay, okay...let's all play nice, boys.

If it was somehow attractive or envious to be a medical professional, I could see the territoriality, but given, at least in my country, the state of health care and the pressures on its workers, it leaves much, too much to be desired as far as them being attractive carrer options; I have sworn to beat my kids if they ever wanted to follow in the old man's footsteps

my mom who is a nurse promised me the same thing...so i'm an OT and my sister is a PT. Call that bending the rules. As for my kids a will make the list of don'ts longer

PT for 4 1/2 years, currently rehab director in a nursing home.   I've put on the sports medicine, acute care, wound care and rehab hats as well.   Nursing homes have their good and bad points, but I can promise you, it's the best job to have if you like to have long afternoons open for training!

What about DO's (doctor of osteopathy)- do you have respect for them, too?

Hmmm, coming to this thread late and I missed all of the controversy.  Derek - I know you are aware of how much I was recently helped by a doctor during my illness I mean no disrespect by this post BUT....

 Y'all are bonkers.

I define medical professional as anyone who makes me wait for a long time in a little room.

Glad I could help the conversation.  Have a nice day.

Apropos of nothing

In the "classical definition" there are but 3 professions

Physician
Attorney
Minister

Any other "profession" is a modern construct.

Edited to add..... However,  if I'm lying in a ditch on the side of the road bleeding, I don't give a rats *** about classical definitions.

Sweet!  Then I count under that definition.  I'm a minister.  A chaplain at a hospital.

Cool...so by locking Janelle in the closet at work, I'm a medical professional. I guess that makes sense, because when I do it makes all of BT a little more sane. SO I'm like a psychiatrist in that respect. I think I need to start billing ya'll.

Just sayin'.

I said makes ME wait in a little room.  Locking sweet Janelle up makes you a bad bad man.  And funny.

My last comment on the thread.  I respect anybody who applies him/herself to a field and helps others in the process.  My posts were merely intended to state an opinion, and I mean no disrespect to anybody, including you, by them.

I don't give a crap what anyone labels me. Though I am a just a measly firefighter/paramedic I do make a difference everyday. Whether I am a professional or not I have not the slightest idea. I do work with plenty of technical stuff. Intubations while laying in mud puddles, over thirty drugs in our drug box, plueral decompressions, cric's in the field, etc etc. Oh yeah I am glad I don't have to wear a tie everyday.

Dang, you beat me to it!

Anyway, ER doc here, finishing up my first full year of practice, taking my oral board exam in 2 months...the last exam in a LOOOONNNNNGGGGG process of becoming board certified in my specialty.

My residency training included being a flight doc, which I loved. I would like to do it again in the future.

In another life, I would have become a paramedic...

I wear olive drab khakis or corduroys and a scrub top to work most days. I wish I could keep my baseball hat and sunglasses on.
