I occasionally run with our 3-yr old border-collie/something, mix.  She is 70 lbs. and all muscle, and still a puppy at heart, so runs too hard for the first mile then slows way down, kind of like the 19 year old kids that often run at the indoor track where I sometimes run. Unlike them, she will continue, well behaved, for 3-4 miles.  I then leave her at home and finish my run by myself.

We got Sara a year and a half ago and I started taking her on my runs. She could only go 2 miles then. She had been in a shelter and was sickly when we got her. Built her distance up gradually and she has gone on runs as long as 2 hours. She stops and swims in the ponds some but I haven't taught her the bike yet.

We found our new dog Willie out running a couple months ago. He is a black and tan coonhound and apparently was abandoned. He is a pretty good runner but he likes to stop and smell things.

I run with my dog a fair amount; she loves it and I figure it kills two birds with one stone.  She is an Am Staff mix and started out running 20-30' with me.  Now, we'll go for between 30-50'; if I'm going longer I'll wu with her and drop her off at home before I finish my run.

105 lb. German Shepherd/Great Dane/Wolf mix. Not on the leash in 2 ft of snow. Embarassed

He can't run much anymore due to his arthritis but used to do up to 3 miles with me. Since I run very lowly and he has long legs it was really more of a trot for him. Now we only go on 1-hour walks--every morning. At almost 14, he's still in great shape.

With two of his buddies at the dog sitter's:

Since your Shepherd can't run anymore ask the dog sitter if you can run with that Blue Heeler in the pic. They are so energetic that when you are done they are just starting!!

I run with my yellow lab. She keeps me moving the first 2 miles or so then I have to drag her back! Our longest has been 4mi.  If I skip my run she will bring me her leash and bug me til we go! Love taking her to our cabin and running through the woods on the trails.

Her potty break gives me a chance to rest!

I've got two guys, a 90lb Pyrenees mix and a 12 lb Eskimo. The big guy will trot for a mile or so. The little guy has gone 10 miles with me and showed no signs of fatigue. In fact on the last run, I swear he shot me a look of disgust, as if to say "WHAT?! That's all you can do?!"

I have a beautiful and kind 11-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, named "Rudy". Since he is a big-running hunting dog, I am not able to run with him. My only attempt went something like this: Me screaming, "Whoah", while Rudy, on leash, dragged me for about a mile with tongue hanging and loud grunting (him, not me). When we finally got into some sad semblance of a rhythm, I began to relax just in time for him to snap on point, stop on a dime, and nearly launch me into the next county. Running + Hunting Dog = Near Shoulder Dislocation. Trust me, it wasn't pretty.

I got the ok from the vet a few weeks ago to start running our new puppy. We have a 5 month old female Pit Bull Terrier.

She already will run for about 3 miles, I think when she is a little older she might help me get ready for a marathon.

I run our dog at least twice a week ... or should I say that she runs me?

We have a five year old Great Dane. Her "trot" is about a 7:30 - 8:00 /mile. When it is cold out, we have no problem holding a 7/minute pace for three miles ... that is, if I am up to it. With that said, she is a short distance runner. I never run her more than 4 miles.

NOW.... I know how people run 6+30 / miles !!!!!

I run with Tom's dogs a few times a week. The big one (60 lbs) is a Pitt/Husky mix, and the little one is a Border Collie mix. I have to take them one at a time, and the funny thing is the Border Collie runs at a much faster pace. I'm slowly working them up in mileage - we are at about 1.5 miles now.

Like others have said - PLEASE start slow and work up the distance like you would, say, a middle school child. And if your dogs are 'dragging' on the way back in (two in this thread have said this), you're probably taking them too far.

Here's the Pitt/Husky mix - he runs at my pace so well: (no, I don't run with the Gentle Leader, this was taken at a parade)

I have a 7 month old Yellow Lab, we walk twice a day. After he turns 1, then I will start doing some running with him. He won't let me miss a walk now.

I have a 6 month old German Shorthaired Pointer that I would like to run with, when he gets older. At the moment he's content with our 1 to 1 1/2 hour walks 4-5 days a week. The picture of him is when he was 12 weeks old, he's about 3x's that size now.

i have a 3 year old German Short-haired Pointer(GSP). Rescued him thie past Memorial Day. He runs up to a 10K with me several times per week. Took a while to get him to quit pointing on our runs. He does great and this winter I plan to take him further.

Careful while you're running him, some people would consider it justice to shoot you on sight for training a bird dog to quit pointing!  Love seeing those Shorthairs.

I have a 2-year-old labradoodle, a super fast guy...usually I run 2 or 3 miles and then drop him off at home and keep running, but both yesterday and today we did 6 miles and he did pretty good.  He slows and stops a lot around 4-5 miles but he sniffs then is good to go again.  He'll get a rest day tomorrow at the groomers.  He's small, only 29 pounds, and loves to run! He does much better when it is cool out.  Tomorrow he gets "sheared" so will look completely different, like a lamb.

Phoebe is a 2 year-old lab/husky mix.  We did 7.5 tonight and she looked like she could do another 7.5.  Of course my 10:00/mile pace is like a fast walk for her

Yep, doggy goes on pretty much every run I do, unless it's really hot.

She's a Mutt.

I also take her mountain biking with me. When it's cool, and we've worked back up to it, she has no problem hanging for 13miles with energy to spare. The summer is her off season.

They love to run, but their full sprint is me jogging along side them. 12" legs puts a damper on anything resembling speed.

I wanna run with one of my dogs (the other has arthritis) but he's sooooooo lazy in the morning & just looks up at me like, "Mom, are you INSANE? It's 5am! I'm NOT going outside NOW!"

So I just don't have the heart to drag him off his bed.

I was surprised at how long it took Cody to work up to running my distances and pace. I would say it took almost 4 mos. for her to understand how to pace herself.

And since I can't pass up an opportunity to post a picture of her beautiful face:

He is smart enough to know when we are running and when we are hunting. I have been been raising/hunting German bird dogs for the past 10 years. I haven't ruined one yet. But I will be on the lookout anyway!

LOL I've trained my cat to walk on a leash (well, by walk I mean wander around the neighborhood in random patterns), but I think any attempts to run with her would be met with stern refusal and disdain.

You could put the cat in a baby jogger and run with it, but I think I'm only suggesting it so you'll seem like more of a crazy cat lady than I am.

I really do want a dog to run with now.
