thelunchbox - 2008-10-24 12:08 PM I did it last year. Adding that to the cost of 2 nights in a hotel, meals, parking, and the obligatory theatre tickets I used to bribe the wife to come made for a VERY expensive tri. Like race wheels expensive. It was a really nice experience, but I won't be doing it again.

That's my take on it.  I didn't have to pay for theatre tickets, but it was a very expensive race for someone out of town.  That being said, I had so much fun and it was a great experience.  I don't think I'll do that one again.

"Like race wheels expensive"

I love it... Really helps put your spending into perspective when using this base-line for everything

Chicago Triathlon is the same way...crazy expensive! Even if you sign up early, I still think it's way too expensive, and way too many people. Even though I live about 10 miles from the city, I just can't justify the cost of it to do it. I'll stick to the smaller, cheaper (not by much) races in my area. Heck I signed up for an HIM for next year that costs less than the Chicago Sprint tri does.

yes, my races last year were ridiculous..

St.Anthony's I think was 200 something, NYC was 225 and Alcatraz was a whopping 327.

the bigger city races are just criminal, but I had those all on my "to do" list.  I won't be doing the last two ever again, and have to wait to do St. A's b/c I just can't afford it.

Alactraz is just an insane amount of money for an Olympic... but they sell out 6 months in advance, and it's a beautiful race.

6 months in advance? The vast majority of people get into Alcatraz by lottery. It was a lot of money to race, but I'm putting my name in again and hope I get picked.

No chance I'd spend over $150 for an Oly (most I anticipate for 2009 is ~$140 for my wife to do the Wildflower Oly). I'll definitely spend in the $250 range for an HIM (since I don't expect to do more than one or two a year).

Price is definitely becoming an issue for my wife and me as registrations creep upward. I'm starting to make a decision on whether/when/where to do my first IM and I'm increasingly leaning toward an independent race (Vineman) largely because of not only the lower price tag, but the ability to wait longer to decide on registering until I'm fairly certain we can afford it.

Run the Triple T. You get a sprint, two Oly's, and a him for $200. Plus swag. And a friggin great weekend.

NAS and highbrow triathlons are out.

Triathlon is like the economy at large.....  sprialing out of control.   Eventually the sport will implode from too high fees.

I'll disagree ....... they could charge $1k for an IM event and they would still sell out in the States within a week or so (and the big ones like FL, WI and LP still in hours).

Entry to the Alcatraz tri is via qualification or random drawing only.

Yes, it's a beautiful and well supported course and I'm hoping for another lucky draw next year.

$225 to swim in the Hudson River. Not a chance in the world!! I talked to a guy this year that put his face into a diaper during the swim. He said the jellyfish he could deal with but face in diaper was too much! YUK!

You can have that one.

meh.. its the cost of doing a "high profile" race .. Nautica NYC is a fab race, in order for this race to take up as much of the city as it does, and it does take up a small chunk.. fees to the city are off the chart.. even though Du's in Central Park or Prospect Park only cost $50-60.. those races dont get 3000- 4000 racers.. those races also dont shut down the West Side Hiway and W72 St for any time.. and by the time you finish this race, I dont think you'll be thinking "wow, that cost $225"

X2 on the Marin County tri at $200. I live down the street and do alot of shot training rides and run through China Camp and thought it'd be awesome to do the tri, till I saw the price.

I think alot of people are giving the cost alot of thought since at the beginning of October they only had 400 registrats, and the website urged you to hurry and reg. since the limit was 1000.

Plus, this is their first year no one knows anything about it, how it is run or anything. I was very tempted to do it but with Treasure Island only 2 weeks after it, that seemed like the logical choice. China Camp is nice though and Lucas Valley Rd is gorgeous too. Can't wait to read some race reports.

I can see paying that much if it is a race you really want to do. I REALLY want to do Alcatrazz and I will someday pay what it takes to get in someday. But as far as putting together a race season I could not justify payiing even half that and doing any more than one or two races. Thankfully I have no desire to do the NYC tri.

I was heartbroken when I got into Alcatraz the year I was doing IMLP...luckily got in for 2008. It was as expensive as doing an IMbrand race....so be prepared to spend a lot of money, but again, it was WELL-WORTH it!

 I'm thinking triple t too!

Here's the thing.... most races are not non-profit races. The companies that put them on are out to make money. And the high profile races, that are popular/hard to get into, can charge those outrageous prices because there are people willing to pay them. The whole Supply and Demand thing.

I do understand the allure of some of these big races, and I've wanted to do some of them as well, but for the majority of my season I'll stick to the local races. Even those can be expensive, but they are not out of line like $225 for an OLY
