verga - 2011-01-04 7:55 AM I must admit that I do give a light honk on the horn when i am passing cyclists or runners, espeically when I am certain they have ear plugs in, just to let them know I am there.
I know a couple of times I didn't hear a vehicle behind me and had a close call or two.
But it is never sexual.

Humans can communicate lots of different things with very few tools.     I think that most people would be able to discern a "courtesy tap" from a "long, drawn out hawnking."

It was me, I thought you had a good stride and wanted to acknowledge it by honking!

Seriously, it can be looked at so many diffeent ways, and taken as such.  Men, well, come on women, we are just men, simple gadgets, you feed us, wind us up, every now and then we do something that inspires you, other than that, well, we are what we are...and that's why you love us, because we are simple creatures.

I have honked at women and men when running or cycling and given a thumbs us when out in the country to inspire them and show a sign of encouragement for their hard work.  NOW, at 5:30?  Could have been they wanted to make sure you were aware of their presence, or maybe you just look so darn hot.  Look at it this way, you made their day!

Kepp up the good work and be careful!

Double standard indeed!   I gladly accept all honks, whistles and occasional flashings (ok that is just on my wish list)  by anyone who chooses to do so during my runs or rides.  I have been honked at and to be honest, it makes me feel good and forget about the hurt for a little while.    That said, there is a thin line of harassment and genuine encouragement.

Sounds like some imature guys.

Now to the other question I have....  If your running against traffic (as we all know you should be, unless it is impossible where you run), how are you followed?

Alas, Norman has this thing against sidewalks. There are several portions of my run (s) that either only have sidewalk on one side of the road, or lights on one side of the road, and then they switch sides, and if I'm uber lucky, I get both lights and sidewalk. I was in a weird area between my flat and the university (where I work). The hope was to get to the uni and a staff area or a call box (bloody phone died, that's my own stupid fault).

I wanted to kick myself too, because I had the same exact thought...after I got home.

"Well damnit Tracey, why didn't you just run the other way, dumbo?"

The flight part of "fight or flight" was very strong. I think that was my first sub 8 mile ever!

Another double standard here.  I enjoy getting honked at, be it by someone I might know or by the guy or girl (I do live in Atlanta) saying "Nice form" or "Hi".

I don't feel threatened and it puts a smile on my face.  I also honk at cyclist to say hello.  But never the stupid HONK that is fairly obvious.  Would I call it harassment?  No.  Annoying?  Yes.

What?? How are you supposed to get the idiot stopped at the green light to move?

I'll admit I'll slow down when I see a runner, but gender doesn't matter since I'm doing it to see if i know them.. Even then I don't honk since I know how much that startles me.  I have been at stop lights with cyclist and rolled down the window to say something along the ways of "great day for a ride, or be safe"   and one time this girl had pink powercranks on her bike and I commented about the PC's.  But again it's not gender related.

But I find it such as unsettling when somen honks at me. and it usually happens more when I'm running than biking for some reason.

Sorry this is happening to you.

The only thing I have to add is that Seinfeld has an old bit on this - and it's hilarious.

I would definitely find the being followed for blocks disconcerting, but I do not find the honks and waves bothersome - I take them as friendly.

I totally prefer the honks and whistles when I'm biking to the angry honk. I've learned to love the landscape trucks that drive by...much more so than the d-bag SUV drivers!

now that you live in NYC, you can just simply ignore the honks as crazy cabs!

This has happened to me exactly once, so take my opinion for what you will.

I was running along the sidewalk on my lunch hour. Two college age-ish guys in a white pickup waited for me to cross the shopping center driveway which they were pulling out of. Then they honked and one guy waved as they drove off. I was flattered.

Or maybe I looked like someon they know and I'm just full of myself. LOL

These guys didn't do anything threatening. That would not be flattering, or okay!

I honk at women when they should put down their make up and pay attention that the light is now green.  Other than that, I don't know what you are talking about.  I would honk at a jogger if she were about to be attacked by an animal or her hair was on fire.

I am really surpirsed as to how many of you honk for encouragement and appreciate that when you are out on the bike.

Perhaps it is a difference in riding area but I can't see the face or hand of the person in the vehicle going the other way at 50mph so if they honk I have no idea if they are being nice, warning me of danger, or being a dbag. All it really serves to do is startle me or make me think something bad is about to happen. I would prefer they don't honk at all.

Guess I better start a poll...

As to the OP, god only knows, perhaps it is the fact that people have started to breed with vegetables.

Indeed.  I'm basically ready to take it off at any given time.  so a little encouragement is all I need.

Wait, I'm reinforcing this stereotype aren't I?   SO BE IT.  I'm ready party with honkers!

I've actually heard that one. I have NO clue who the person was talking to as I was the only one on the road that was not in a vehicle. I laughed so hard I had to stop for a minute. I figure even Ray Charles can make cat calls.

I've never done it before and never will, but I do think it is one of those habits (much like racism) that the media seems to thrive off and inadvertently support.

As a man though, I will say that the loud mouths aren't the ones you have to worry about.  They're generally harmless.

Nice. So being followed by strangers driving in a car while you are on foot, in the dark, when your phone is dead, and nobody else is around....yeah, that's something every girl should just accept as flattery and "get over it". Do you have a daughter or a wife? If she was out running alone before sunrise and two guys followed her for blocks would you tell her to "get over it" when she came home spooked and upset? I hope not.
