Janelle, your own facts that you cited contradict your opinion. HIGHLIGHTED hair is BLEACHED hair.

I didn't realize we were arguing. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Since you asked:

  • Coloring is when you apply color to hair. It does not strip out your existing color, it just adheres to your hair.
  • Bleaching or highlighting is stripping away color. Much more harmful to the hair than applying color.

Opus - 2006-01-17 5:12 PM Sounds to me like highlighting is bleaching...

Then what is coloring?  It would be the same as highlighting, dying, etc.

I'm no expert, but to go from light to dark would be coloring, and to go from dark to lighter would involve bleaching. I assume hair contains some kind of pigment which would have to be bleached out before you could go lighter. And my wife says I don't listen!

You really should just cut it off now. I guarantee that you won't die from it, and it will be a growing experience for you.

Okay, I've had it. PMS, crappy day and now the most shallow thread ever. I was the manager of the Ronald McDonald House for 2 years and saw 33 kids die of cancer. They could care less about how cute someone looks with long hair or short hair.Janelle....not slamming you..it's good that you want to do this. In my life if I commit to do something, I follow through. So I think that if you have already committed, you must do it. If you haven't, for the sake of those BT'ers who might have a personal experience with a cancer patient....keep your very normal thoughts about your hair more to yourself. This is a sensitive subject and should be treated with the sensitivity of not knowing what others have gone through. There are certain people that read these boards that have gone through hair-loss from chemo themselves and I would think they are probably dumbfounded right about now.Okay, it's only Tues., but I'm getting a glass of wine.AGAIN....not slamming you....just a sensitivity issue.Edited for anal punctuation error.

... like SAG said. the irony in this is incredible. there are many, many people who WISH they had long hair to be annoyed by, take forever to dry, and not be able to do much with it. this post is bordering on being insensitive and a bit crass. sorry.

(maybe i need to learn more patiance...) anyways.... do what you want, its your cross to bare.

Remember why you started this project in the first place. Thinks of the patients you're doing this for. You are a TNT mentor; think of how much it would mean to one of CJs friends. I know it must be a pain, but persevere. You're doing a good thing!

I'm growing my hair for LOL right now too! And I can totally sympathize with what a pain it can be. (Chlorine is NOT my friend.) I was about 2 inches away this summer and then had to cut it because of the damage. I'm about 4 inches to go, as well. Hang in there! I have 4 friends who did it this summer and they felt awesome about it. The other thing is, if you don't do it now, you can always do it later. There, unfortunately, will always be people in need of wigs due to chemo.
If you do decide this isn't the way to contribute, there are a whole lot of other ways to help out. The cancer society is always having events you can participate in or organize. Whatever you choose, good intentions go a long way!

1.Ok, yes aquagoddes, I do! LOL!
2. I dontated 12 inches of highlighted hair. As long as its healthy they take it. Renee, I know I heard that too at one point, but they took mine.
3. oh.my.god.oh.my.god.
4. I am glad I did it. My hair was so expensive to keep up and healthy, it is very thick. Shampoo, conditioner, and masks were costing me a fortune, but I am so glad I did it. My hair was the prettiest donated that day... My ponytail was awesome.

Janelle, only you can decide. I wore a lot of ponytails and hated it some days, but it was worth it for me.

Do it. Do it. You're almost there.

When my God-daughter was seven, she decided she would grow her hair and donate to locks of love. When she turned 9, she was able to donate...and looked soo cute with her new little bob. I can assure you that no one has more annoying hair than she does, and if a kid that young can stick it out and do it, so can you. It's for a great cause and you'll feel awesome after you donate it. My God daughter was soooooo excited about.

Thank you. I think everyone is getting all caught up in wanting to argue all the time and not truly reading what I wrote. I said in my original post that I wanted to hear form other's peoples experiences with this organization so get encouragement.  I am not being shallow by wanting to cut a few inches off my hair because it is high maintenance.  If I were shallow I would not be growing my hair out  down to to my butt, hating ever minute of it but doing it for a cause.  And...if I were shallow, I would not be spending my free time being involved with Team in Training raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for the 3rd year in a row. For the record I have lost family members to cancer and am involved with leukemia patients and their families on a regular basis.  And- did I mention I participate in Relay for Life every year?  Maybe I needed to state all this in my original post so I could jsutify the reason behind why I'm TRYING to grow my hari out.  And, if I were shallow I would not be allowing someone to chop 10 inches off and go to a shorter haircut.  Shallow- think what you want.  And yes- create your own thread for PMS-ing.  Don't ruin my thread-  it's for a good cause.

Just for clarification, bleaching is removing all pigmentation from your.  When they say "bleaching", they mean like Marilyn Monroe bleach blonde hair.  With highlighting, some of your hair is lighter but since every hair isn't "bleached" your hair still contains 75% of pigementation. Therefore, Locks of Love can still use my hair because they can color it without any issues.  (I got that from a reliable source- my hairdresser )

I just donated my hair 2 weeks ago. It's such a good thing to be able to help out other people, even with the little things in life! It is worth taking care of it and growing it out if you are able to help other people who don't have the luxury of beautiful hair!

How many years did you grow it out?  I have about 10 more months to go.

Janelle, how long have you been growing it out? I think mine took me about 3 years. There are vitamins you can take to help promote growth too. Might want to research that.

....nevermind. I just re read the first post and answered my question.

Chris Tree - 2006-01-18 7:45 AM Do you have to donate 10" inches? Will they take less??? How much do you plan on being left with??? If you don't mind a crop (women don't always look better with long hair - its about the woman, not the hair) could you get the 10 inches??? If you went for a crop you get sponsorship for a head "shave" and make bucks for charity too!!! Everyone wins!

Nope- they will only take10 inches min.  I am over hlaf way- only 4 more to go, so that's a good way of looking at it.  I don't really care how my hair will look afterwards.  I've had short hair before, so it's no big deal.  It'll grow.  I have found that eating more protein from training has helped it grow, so maybe I can get 10 inches sooner than 11 months.  It's just been hard growing it out.  I mean, I know there's an end goal but it seems to be taking FOREVER and the goal isn't getting here soon as I would like it.  And yes- it's just like training for any race.  You know you can do it, you know there's a reward, you know why you're doing it.   But every now and then you just get frustrated and tend to question yourself and whether or not you can do it.  I've thought about possibly delyaing getting it cut right when I get the 10 inches and maybe let it grow a little longer and try to incorporate getting my hair cut with a Team in Training fundraisier to raise money for the Society- not sure how I could work that out but it's an idea.

It's longer than 10" right now, so why don't you do a "shave your head" fundraiser?

I think this is a really good idea for lots of reasons:

  • It's a good way to identify with the cancer patients your supporting. When my grandpa was diagnosed with N-H lymphoma, I shaved my head when he went bald. Of course, I'm a guy...
  • A bald head for a girl is a great conversation starter. Also, it's a great way to meet guys who aren't interested in you for your looks (although there's nothing at all wrong with how it looks).
  • It's a pretty significant hydrodynamic advantage in the water. I used to shave my head for swimming when I was a kid.
Who want's to contribute to get Janelle to shave her head? I bet we can raise 5 grand pretty quickly, just here on BT. If she's up for it, I'll donate first. We can even donate on her TNT fundraising page.

I'll donate second.
