bmass - 2013-04-21 8:30 PMI have seen lists that ranked "Citizen Kane" the best movie of all time.  Hated it!  Slow and boring.  For more modern, agree with Dark Knight.  I have thankfully never seen Titanic.
I can't believe you said Citizen Kane. I was gonna say that. F-ing hated it, but fully admit I probably just didn't "get it".I hated The Hobit. The group responsible for that gross mistep should be punished.

jmk-brooklyn - 2013-04-21 6:02 PMI enjoyed Gladiator as an epic, but no way did I think it deserved Best Picture. Ditto Dances With Wolves.ETA: Gladiator wasn't up against a strong field. Traffic and Erin Brockovich were the other contenders and neither was outstanding. OTOH, Dances With Wolves beat out Goodfellas, which, in retrospect, is one of the greatest Oscar travesties ever.

I'm with you on Goodfellas. My kids now even say "am I funny like a clown or something? Tell me how I'm funny!!!"

Did you know that scene was ad-libbed? Scorsese was in on it, but the other actors didn't know what Pesci was doing and their confused and nervous reactions at the beginning of the scene are real.

The Deer Hunter - one of my all time favorites !!!

I thought the Black Swan was ridiculous and Natalie Portman's fake overly-dramatic, unbelievable acting made me want to gag Everyone else I know loved it.

Also really disliked Shakespeare in Love....don't care for Gwyneth Paltrow's acting skills at all.

Didn't know that. That explains why it's so good.

I agree Bear on Tree of Life. It's the cure for insomnia.

Also agree on Black Swan. Natalie Portman should stick to Star Wars or "Your Highness" type movies!!!

I just don't like it. The first time I watched it I thought it was entertaining but now I know what is going to happen I just don't enjoy the movie. Hubby will turn it on and I find something else to do. Same with that movie about the Hillbilly singers. I don't remember the name of it, George Clooney was in it.

I have never ever been able to stay awake for Dances With Wolves. Fall asleep every time.

Was Message In a Bottle critically acclaimed? I was P.O.'d with the ending to that movie and wished I could get those hours of my life back.

Agree about Titanic - never got into that one either.

Forest Gump. Dumbest. movie. ever.  But I can watch Dances with Wolves over and over...

Omigwash, a group of people with good taste! (Rut roh ... if *I* think you have good taste ... have you seen the stuff I wear? Oh. Yes. Apparently )

I think I'm the only human with any kind of access to any kind of screen who hasn't seen Titanic. No desire to, either. Not a huge Leo fan either, but Blood Diamond is one of my favorite movies and I do think he did a stellar job in that.

Phew. I thought I was the only one who didn't think Forrest Gump was great. I will say it is one of the few movies that's better than the book, though!

Can't get through Dances with Wolves to the end. Can't get through much with Kevin Costner to the end. Sorry.

I'm no movie buff (y'think) but there are a lot of weird foreign films I can get through, actually with some fascination. I think it's because they're so different ... the movies above are pretty much wishy-washy overly dramatic popular crap ... and that kind of crap is the same that's popular the world over, whether they're Hollywood or Bollywood blockbusters. I guess the foreign films I like are the ones that most people even in those countries don't know of or like, either

These don't count as crtically acclaimed by any means, but they are kind of cult favorites that I just could never get into:  Super Troopers and The Big Lebowski.  Obviously Troopers is far from winning any awards, and maybe it was just my stoner group of friends that loved it, but I just never found it that funny.  Lebowski, I know the whole thing with the dude and the rug, I just can't get into it.

A lot of people recommended Inglorious Bastards and I couldn't get through the first 20 minutes.

I'm going to get the biggest "WHAT???" here:

The Godfather.

I think Peter from Family Guy sums up my feelings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAR-GxoFwBI

I've tried watching it 3 or 4 times.  Just cannot get through it.

I'll also second The Big Lebowski.  What a waste of 2 hours.

I haven't seen Titanic either. Don't care to. I know what happens in the end. The ship sinks. Enough already

Going to go in to the way back machine. Out of Africa. What was that all about? I couldn't tell any of the characteers apart. They did nothing for hours on end. And.... it was hours on end. The longest movie ever. I spent most of it trying to decide what would be more painful, trying to slit my wrists with my drink straw or watching the movie to the end.

You shut your filthy mouth about The Big Lebowski

Okay I'm a superfan for Lebowski.  It seems people love or just absolutely hate The Big Lebowski. My wife being in the extreme hate side.

She also hates Napolean Dynamite so she has not taste in movies.

I thought The Fountain was one of the worst movies ever made. It I would give it a 3 out of 10 and I love most movies even the bad ones.

These are just the that I could think of off the top of my head:

Avatar  (predictable plot, socialist propaganda, over simplistic idea of right and wrong, racist, prejudice, would've made a great cheesy 70's sci fi movie...thank god for CGI to make it some $$$ at the box office.)

Zero Dark Thirty  (yawn fest. Now I see why movies are "based" on true stories and try not to attempt to make them accurate.  Leave interesting truth for books...movies just can't do it.)

Argo.  (Now I see why movies should never be "based" on true stories.  People go around thinking they know what happened after watching it.  And yes, I am an irked Canadian at how the story was changed from reality.  Cheesy, plus the Iranian's chasing the plane at the end of the movie reminded me of something I saw on the A Team back in the 80's.)

A Team.  (Horrible plot.  What were all these great actors thinking?  Needed some extra bucks to renovate the mansion or something and threw this together on a weekend? Liam...dude...wtf)

Gangster Wars  (absolutely horrible..comments as per A Team)

Captain America  (Ryan Gosling isn't an actor.  No more than Chris Hemsworth.)

The first of the Star Wars Movie (the jar jar banks thing..come on...)

Hobbit. (More walking..more boring talking..of course this is one movie where it matches the book in length and quality...)

several come to mind:  Titanic, English Patient, Bridges of Madison County.

I lreally enjoyed Dark Night!  Of course, I like most action movies.  Love stories though, especially when there is cheating involved make me want to hurl! BTW...hated these movies prior to my wife cheating on me.  Now just thinking about them makes me want to hurl.

"The Royal Tenenbaums" or pretty much anything by Wes Anderson. I don't what people like about this guy's movies. They're just long and tedious and unfunny. I think there's one funny line in "Rushmore", but a whole lot of tedious situations with characters I don't care about.

I also just watched Terry Gilliam's "Brazil". Wow. One of the few movies I have ever shut off or walked out of, along with "Spaceballs" -- and I generally LIKE Mel Brooks.

On the same vein - I sat down one day when 'Gone with the Wind' was on PBS - it was ridiculously long and the story didn't seem to go anywhere! I was so mad - but then maybe I just hadn't done my homework (i didn't read the book) to know the Scarlett doesn't learn anything at all and is a pretty terrible person - but it was the biggest movie of all time before so I thought I would give it a shot.

x2 on the Royal Tenenbaums.  Didn't get it.  Unfortunately I saw it in the theatre.  And can agree on the other Wes Anderson one I saw 'The Life Aquatic'.
