Extreme Veteran 541 Virginny | Subject: RE: Turkey Terrors! I did not go to the pool last night... I forgot about the swimteam. I just went home. So... I went and lifted AND swam this morning. I feel great! (except for all those sore muscles). Do unshod populations run marathons, though? Sounds interesting, I'll have to go read that thread. |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Turkey Terrors! There are people who run marathons barefoot. I am not one of them, because I am vain. Marathons are usually on the road, and to run barefoot on the road you have to build up some pretty tough skin. Ugly tough skin. Dee - building up to barefoot slowly is the key. Keep your mileage low and run either on a soft grassy surface or on the treadmill. It is so worth it for how it trains your body to run properly! Hope everyone is having a good morning. I'm looking forward to some nice yoga in a bit. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Turkey Terrors! Atlantia - 2007-11-07 8:24 PM I love barefooting! If I hadn't ever done a barefoot run, I never would have really gotten into running. It teaches you proper form and strengthens your feet and ankles. I train in racing flats, but still get in a bit of barefooting when I can. Today was a 3 mile run this morning, and just finished up 53 minutes of yoga. Does anybody else have a hard time concentrating during the meditation portion of yoga? My mind always wanders to what we're having for dinner, things I have to do at work, that hot guy in the line at the market, etc. My mind tends to wander a bit, too, during meditation. I took a course in Buddhism in college and the professor advised us to acknowledge the thought and then push it away. It works pretty well. After awhile I stopped having so many random thoughts and could clear my mind for a few minutes at a time. Takes a bit of work, but worth it. |

Master 2051 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: Turkey Terrors! I'm very interested in barefoot running! I read a little about it in Maffetone's book "The Maffetone Method" but haven't ever tried it. Amazing cycle class last night. Our instructor really knows her stuff. We put a couple blocks under our front wheel to help us simulate proper climbing position and then did max cadence drills one leg at a time. (The other leg was unclipped and rested on the trainer.) Holy Carp! It was hard to keep up your cadence without "clunking" but I can feel myself getting stronger! Going to try to run tonight but my meeting schedule is packed until 7pm. May have to squeeze in an extra run this weekend. |

Subject: RE: Turkey Terrors! lisazapato - 2007-11-07 3:23 PM there was a thread recently with an article pasted that posited that shoes cause injuries. 4 major points/datum i thought were interesting: 1) unshod populations (ie primitive peoples that don't wear shoes) have way lower incidences of things like bunions, plantar fascitis, shin splints, whatever. 2) in a survey of i think ~5000 runners at some long course event, the runners with shoes > $95 had more injuries than runners with shoes < $95. I was thinking about this today on my run. Specifically, point 1 about the non-shoe wearing people. I think there is more to it than simply not wearing shoes. Plantar fasciitis frequently affects heavier people, and bunions are can be linked to high heel wearing (which is why more women have bunions than men). I got nothing for you on the shin splints, but I'd wager that some contributing factors to the unshod folks being better off in the injury department, might be due to a generally lower weight than those of us in the developed nations, and also because they're not dealing with the stilettos. As far as point 2, the more expensive shoes tend to be the ones with more support (like motion control plus shoes). It's possible that these people may have found their way to the more expensive shoes due to biomechanical issues that lead them to an injury, which leads them to a doctor, who points them to a more supportive (expensive) shoe. I know I didn't go and get my gait analyzed until I was having issues with my Sports Authority Nikes. Personally, thanks to some genetically low arches and bunions, I'm just out of luck as far as the barefoot running goes. After my metabolic test last year, the trainer told me I had a low metabolism. I told her I am genetically programed to survive a famine. Got in my 3 miles today. 19.5 miles in the last 7 days, the most I have ever ran in a week. woohoo! I'm trying to keep hubby running, so I had him meet me for the run today. He is doing a 10K with me in April. He is getting there, slowly but surely. He'll probably smoke me by the time April rolls around, if he will just stick with training. Champion 23360 Taser-World | Subject: RE: Turkey Terrors! Happy Saturday! Tomorrow is SUNDAY, the day when you report your achievements for the beginning of November! While posting your “progress report” on your team thread, feel free to brag about how great your workouts have been! This challenge is about achieving your goals -- so let's hear how you've done! And now, here’s a quick update on what all our teams have been up to…. The Moscateers – Team1 The youngsters are showing up their parents! Comet_the_dog ran with his daughter, Dani – and lost. Congratulations to Dani, who did a 5k in just over 38 minutes! And 1for1’s daughter, Gidgetintraining, is already at 41% of her running goal and 50% of her workout goal! Go kids! The Vigilantes – Team2 This team has a lot of “firsts” planned for this weekend! ScotinSeattle and Medusa_Ann are doing a 10k trail run this weekend! It’s their first 10k. And Fielding will be doing her very first race this weekend! Unfortunately, they had to cancel the swim portion, due to an oil spill. Good luck everyone! You’ll do great! Turkey Terrors – Team3 Running is the topic of the day for this team. Some of it is even being done barefoot! Gygyhawk had a fantastic response to her trainer’s comment that her metabolism was low. But you’ll have to stop by this team’s thread to read it! 5 For Fighting – Team5 After training hard, this team likes to kick back with a glass of wine. Or beer. Or maybe even both…. To make sure there is no confusion as to which beverage is preferred, this team posts pics of their favorite post-workout cocktail. Someday, they hope to start a wine mail-order business. They Who Shall Not Be Named (Twisnibbins) – Team6 This group posts so much that their team leader, LastCall2003 (Beth) must now post daily updates to summarize the discussion! Believe it or not, this group actually discussed running AND swimming this week! (Who knows, maybe cycling is next?) HCS5QA (Hector) will be running his first Half Marathon on Sunday! Run, Hector, run! To help inspire Hector, team leader Beth will be waving her pom poms! Wild Hippos – Team7 Several members of the Hippos have been benched due to illness. Owl_girl wants to know if puking time counts as “ab work.” (We now know more about her illness than we really wanted to!) Team Leader Cat received a penalty flag for inappropriate language, and had to state three positive things about herself. Is Lyssa-gator slacking off? We’ll find out soon, depending upon whether she accepts Baowolf’s challenge of doing a 34 mile bike ride with him. Hard Core Tri Corps – Team8 Zipp1 ran an awesome 8k race today. ACGRAY22 joined the team, becoming the 102nd person in the challenge. TriAya (Yanti) told us about her progress to date – including details of her 100+ pound weight loss, and posting some absolutely incredible pics of her HOT TRI BODY! If you want to be inspired, you need to stop by this team’s thread and see Yanti’s transformation into a “tri hottie”! Amazing! From BT News Headquarters, this has been your weekly Challenge update. Member 28 Newport News, VA | Subject: RE: Turkey Terrors! Hey team! Everyone's logs look awesome! Had a rough week this week with travelling. Next week will find me driving about 800 miles between M-F. So, I expect little running. For some reason, driving aggravates my knee more than anything else. But, no worries. I'll complete my goals. I already have the whole month mapped out, factoring in my travelling. Although, I think that losing 5 pounds during the month with Thanksgiving and almost 3 weeks of travelling is a bit ambitious. Question... does anyone know how that barefoot running affects/feels on the knees? Doc says my right (the one injured from totalling my motorcycle) is a bit arthritic now. ugh. Would love to improve mechanics, but not at the risk of more pain. Thanks! PS: My new goal is to have legs like Atlantia's someday. Killer! Sooooo jealous..... :-) |

Doc says my right (the one injured from totalling my motorcycle) is a bit arthritic now. ugh. Would love to improve mechanics, but not at the risk of more pain. Thanks! I've found that barefooting is great for the knees, because you are forced to land gently. Without a shoe to cushion you, you must bend your knee enough at impact to cushion yourself, and therefore protect your knees. I can't stress enough the importance of going into the barefooting world gently! Start with walking if you usually wear shoes. Gradually build up to a few minutes of running, always on the softest surface you have at your disposal. |
