Here's something to warm your hearts on this cold day, or if you already live somewhere warm, hopefully to make you smile.

Thank you thank you thank you, Melanie.  I needed that today.  I'm trying hard to have a better day than yesterday, focusing on gratitude and compassion toward myself and others.  I started my day with this song written by a friend:

Namaste. I honor the place in you in which the entire universe dwells.  I honor the place in me which is of love of truth of light and of peace.  When you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, we are one.  Namaste.

(((Hugs))) to all.

ETA:  And some cute puppy pictures.

My son really wants a border collie.  We had a long discussion last night about it.

Do you know much about the breed?

I sent the third picture to my wife.  How could one say no to that.

Why?

ha! Not being rude/abrupt, but curious why a border collie? I'm assuming it came up in the discussion.

When we were researching breeds their intelligence and energy appealed to him.  Not sure how this going to play out though.  At dinner tonight, before we got to the subject my wife declared that she wanted to raise chickens.  So focus has shifted for now.  Seemed like a pretty random desire.  We know nothing about chickens and she wants me to build a coup and pen.  I'm more inclined to go with the chickens because if interest fizzles down the road we can just eat them, not so the dog.

hehehehe....can you sell your son on their energy and intelligence so everyone is happy?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPrJLkzymhM

That is hilarious.  I can so see my son training the chickens to do something like that.  Apparently the local feed store has weekly shipments of chicks and they go really fast.  My wife has the arrival schedule and has been reading a "how to care for chickens" book with my son.  This should be very interesting.  We have a lot of racoons in the neighboorhood who I'm sure will be sitting in the bushes licking their chops as we set this up.  Last year's animal adventure was to create a koi pond.  They ate every fish the first night.

We had chickens when my boys were younger.  Racoons are a huge issue, molting is gross and makes them look weird, and the rooster used to chase my boys. We used to go to the feed store in the spring to replace the ones who hadn't survived the winter. The boys loved holding the chicks.

So, again my preface here is that I am from a small town...

Anyway, I had two chickens. A hen and a rooster. The rooster was manipulative, crafty, sneaky and MEAN. He would sneak up on me and then charge, using his legs to do this crazy flying leap ninja kick. It was terrifying, and incredibly painful if he got you. He got my dad and gave him a charlie horse.

He would crow really early in the morning (of course) and to shut him up, I would shoot him with my BB gun (only pumping it a couple times.) Just now recalling this, my city life seems so distant LOL

This would happen only once and the party would be over.  I do not think my wife has considered this.  She would probably beat me to them.  My son was wondering what a chicken without a head running around would look like and I think he would find out.

My Chicken Story ...

Growing up, we had a house in the mountains (volcanoes) that ring Jakarta (you just can't see 'em for the pollution but they're there). It was very farmsy, plenty of land (heck, even a fireplace) and fish and chickens. We often went there on weekends and holidays and would usually bring one of the Dobermans. Our huge (oversize for competition!) male Dobe, his first time up ... thought that chasing the rooster would be fun. I saw them disappear around a corner like Roadrunner and Wiley Coyote.

A moment later, a very large and very terrified Doberman in full flight comes back around the corner with the rooster hot on his tail

I do know how to slaughter, pluck, dress and cook chickens. It was also Mutti who taught me how to shoot rifles. She's a very good hunter (all her brothers too, one was a professional hunter and game-meat butcher). Gatherers, too. It's really hard and really critical to know which plants, roots, and mushrooms (among many lookalikes) you CAN eat! Kept them alive during severe rationing in WWII.

HA! That's amazing. Roosters are a-holes. Period.

I really want to take some classes on gathering. I don't want to go all Christopher McCandless out there.

I fail to understand why Sbux doesn't have actual door delivery here like every single other any-kinda-food chain. My sister dropped by to check on me (etc.) on Thurs and brought warm treats and ambrosia from the Sbux. She is an angel.

I just got back from T's school. We have special parent lunch day every month. 90% of the time the cafeteria does pizza for the kids whose parents don't bring them lunch...and I'm surprised by the amount of food that's thrown away. Today they served "fish tacos" and tater tots. There were five girls at our table with us; two had lunches from home. The other three had fried bread-crumb sticks (there was basically no meat), tots, and chocolate mild/juice. All three threw almost every bite of food in the garbage. I can't say that I blame them, and T refuses to buy school lunch, but....THE WASTE!!!  It really is shocking and disconcerting that they go out to recess and back to learn with almost no fuel.

I know exactly what you are talking about.  My son gets hot lunch at the school but he usually throws 90% away.  We pack snacks for him so he's not running on empty.  There are a few things they serve that are edible but most of it is so unappealing and not that healthy.  Terrible waste of food and money plus they are not fulfilling their obligation to feed these kids (this is the primary meal of the day for many of them that are subsidized due to income).  I did see a story on the news this morning that one school district was going to monitor waste and take steps to reduce it.  In the meantime, I think they just turn a blind eye to it.  Their lunch lady is the stereotypical crazy lady too.  My son says she scares him.

Good luck everyone racing.  Sending healing vibes to Yanti and Spanky.

Sean, I'm really curious how you are going to pace this 10k after the last one.  I assume you are going to go out faster, just be careful.  There is something to be said about finishing those last miles strong.  Can't wait to hear how it turns out.

I'm actually not racing this 10k, just treating it as a training run. I'll be pushing the double stroller while pacing my wife. She hasn't been running as much as she should have so I imagine we'll be walking some as well. I kind of wish I was racing though, that was fun!

But it should be a good time for a great cause. A bunch of folks from the office are doing this run as it's being put on by a former co-worker of ours. She lost her precious baby Maddie after only 12 days of life to congenital CMV. If you would like to learn more about this PREVENTABLE viral cause of developmental disabilities in newborns or to donate to the cause please visit http://www.maddiesmission.org/ (if you donate, make sure and do it for the "BP Speedy Subsea" team).

I swear I am Alive and Healthy. All is going good. New job is keeping me busy and energized but also contributing to several missed work outs too. I need to find a new balance and schedule. Weather is warming up and BOB is helping melt the snow as the days get longer. Not looking forward to loosing an hour of sleep this weekend. Kids are all doing well. Beautiful wife is pondering entrepreneurship. Woop Woop new adventures.

All racers go fast and go smart.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
