Here's hoping that this is not a major event.

Amazingly dumb tourists from Australia are still flocking to the island at present because it's school holidays here. So if it does erupt they are going to add thousands to the number of people that are going to get caught up in the aftermath.

Kind of a cool thing on my run today. I changed my route and ran to the fog horn at the end of the point I live on. The last mile before I turn around is down a two track through some marsh and heavy brush. The way the point is set up, birders call it a migration trap, because birds will stop and take an extended rest on their migration either North or South.
Today as a was running through this section, I noticed a lot of Monarch butterflies. Until I reached the foghorn and my turn around, when there were hundreds of butterflies. It was amazing! I have never seen anything like this (outside of a butterfly house). I tried to take a picture, but my phone isn't good enough to take a picture that would show anything.

I have come upon a similar migration when climbing in the Oregon Cascades. As we neared the top of a nearly 10,000 foot peak, there was an incredible concentration of what appeared to be monarch butterflies sitting and flying around the top. Apparently they stop on peaks to rest while riding the high-altitude air currents on their migrations.

Well I am back in Santa Fe and feeling "normal" for a couple days now.  I know I need to take it easy, but...

I have the Marine Corp Marathon in three weeks (ohcrapIstillneedtobookmyflight).  How would you all bridge from IM to a marathon in 4 weeks?

Lots of rest with some easy bikes and easy swims, maybe some hiking towards the end of next week. Add some speed/intensity work starting the week of the 8th to keep some sharpness. I'm thinking that you have the distance thing covered!

Has anyone ever done a night time trail race? I stumbled across a series of them held here and they have me intrigued.

I've done 1.  It was a lot of fun.  The course was marked with glow sticks which worked well except in those areas where the trail turned and the light was after the turn! In those areas if you weren't near the people in front it was difficult to pick up the trail.  Thankfully, there were only 1 or 2 places like that in the race I did.  I imagine the type of trail would make a difference in regards to how easy or hard it would be to follow as well.  The best advice I can give is to make sure you have a really good light !  And, if your place is anything like mine, have bug spray!!

Pretty much no activity the first week, shed the fatigue of the last event is priority here. The non-weight bearing activities are helpful in getting some movement going without adding stress. Then build up running again as able. I don't see a need to really beat yourself up here as that could bring on the fatigue pretty quick. No particular workouts to get to, but would try to work in going a little faster for short sections either later in week 2, or in week 3. Start with some strides so the motion feels better at least. If anything, that's what to look at, how well you feel running. Don't worry about trying to push a 20 miler or max weekly mileage like in a full build-up. That's getting things backwards. Build up what you're able and that's what you have to go with. Probably not going to have much of a taper because you're not likely to build up a whole lot of volume in this time.

I've run after sunset plenty and had a couple twilight races, but none fully at night. What does the race say?

its fully dark, starts at 7:15 and we don't have daylight saving here.

(One really should not surf the net while feeding puppies in the wee hours)

I ran a Ragnar leg after dark that was on a mtb course. The difficulty was shadows and hidden roots. I would read the description carefully. You don't want to miss a bunch of training due to a sprained ankle. And I agree with a good headlamp!

I am getting ready to do one in the State Park here. It is Halloween themed. I hope it is good weather because I won't be able to do it if it is muddy. I don't want to risk twisting my ankle again. It sounds like tons of fun.
