Expert 1007 Missouri | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN- Miles and Miles ahead!!!! CLOSED Hey guys! I haven't been around much (not posting anyway, I've been trying to keep up with the reading at least). I had a family issue come up on Sunday that I'm still trying to wrap my head around. Nothing really serious - just very unexpected. I had a good 5k race last Sunday morning though. I didn't quite get the sub-30 that I was hoping for, but did get a new PR of 30:28 so I'm pretty happy about that. No racing for me this weekend. I'm going to try to join a group run on Saturday morning if the weather cooperates. I need to get 10 miles in and I'm hoping that being with a group will make the run go a little easier. My long runs have suffered a bit over the last couple of weeks due to races and my half marathon is only 2 weeks away so I've got to get this run in. Good luck to those that are racing this weekend! Master 2005 Silverton, Oregon | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN- Miles and Miles ahead!!!! CLOSED Tracy- Congrats on signing up for the Oly! Great job on the training! You're AWESOME!!! Kelly- We'll miss you at Lonestar! Totally understand where you're coming from on being active and doing what brings you joy though. Triathlon is just one of many worthwhile obsessions (heresy I know ). Thanks for sticking around and sharing your knowledge and experience with us! Kyla- The battery life on the 305/301 was the deciding factor on my decision to get a 310xt for Christmas. Plus, it ends the need to wear two watches. Stanley- Hope you get in the actual race. Keeping my fingers crossed for you! DJ- I think you have your priorities perfectly in line. Do what you can and let the rest go. Enjoy your weekend! Lonestar- hehe, hearing about the temps... maybe I'm glad it'll be an aquabike for me. I'll be relaxing in the shade with a beer while ya'll are out there sweating your azzes off! |

No I was seriously referring to someone (not in the mg) that wore one watch for the IM bike and then a different watch for the IM run. Although that is such a good picture of Tracy it should be posted from time to time. Anyone ever notice Tracy NEVER takes a bad picture? So photogentic! http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/show-album.asp?albumid=12009&photoid=100267 you're really making this too easy linda. that is Tracy's evil twin.

I guess I understand on the run (see how your mile splits are), but why on the bike? If the course is advertise at a 56 mile bike, then you know you are biking 56 miles, if it is advertised @ a 24 mile bike then you know you are biking 24 miles. I love technology as much as anyone, and do use a garmin on when I am training. I like to use google earth, and catch evelation gain and loss, but in a race.... The course is already mapped out. What am I missing? |

What am I missing? Garmin for races: Heart rate, if you are using this as a guide, it helps keep you at a range you can sustain and not blow up, especially on the bike to run. Having the data for post race analysis is great as well, you can see where you lacked training, if your HR spikes up while doing hills and then for the next few miles you are below your normal as you recover, you may need to focus on hills more. Training data is great, but the most to be gained is from races. It tells you what things to improve and what areas you do well. I would look back at cadence/speed/hr and power if available to see that I may be better off holding a wattage at a lower cadence early in the ride, but then after so long to change it up and spin a bit more to let my muscles flush out and be more prepared for the run. There are lots more things, but these outline some of the benefit. |

It does for me. I don't have wattage to guide me so I monitor my cadance by adjusting my gears, otherwise I'll go out too fast and burn up for the run. For example (per your recommendations) on my half I kept my cadance around 90rpms and adjusted my gears accordingly and didn't worry about the speed. Even though this kept me at a speed slightly lower than I would have done if I only went on RPE, it kept me at a steadier exertion level and I still had legs for the run. (at least part of the run, but that's a different story). If I had tried to hold a certain speed I would have mashed too high a gear and burned out. |

LOL, mainly use it these days for T2 time and run splits, major crutch to know my splits and HR now running. If I didn't have the PT I would use it for recording data. |

I remember Steve told us a looooooonnnnnnggggggggggg time ago, about watching your cadence on the bike. Trying keeping it in that sweetspot of 80-90. Last year when I didn't have power, I trained and raced by HR with the full knowledge that I wanted to do well from the bike to the run. I could have gone faster, but my run would have suffered. I have examples of where it happened and it sucked. Like Tracy and a couple of others, I do not look at MPH at all. What's the point when I am racing a full triathlon, not racing on the bike? maybe if I made my living that way I would feel differently. I have a natural cadence so I really don't look at it either...this year, I trained all winter with power and will be doing the same outdoors, training or racing. I'll watch Watts, but I will triangulate with HR, just in case. There were times when I had stomach issues and backed off into Z2 to try to get them under control. I think it is fairly individual how you handle these things. I tend to look at my training data with the same critical eye as my racing data, but that's just me. I like to look at that stuff even if I only pull out one nugget. Great examples is this week on my blind LT ride, I thought I was in hog heaven cranking out LT or higher watts...totally wrong. My cadence was the same 95, but my Watts were 5% below LT. Had I increased my gearing and dropped cadence slightly, mid 80s, I would have been sitting exactly where I needed to be. Something to take away for the upcoming weeks pain and torture sufferfest! |

Master 2501 | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN- Miles and Miles ahead!!!! CLOSED Re: Garmin for racing... For the bike in my HIM I totally used it to monitor HR and cadence. This was so important, for me, as it was a hilly course and I feel if I had not kept my HR in check I would have burned a ton on the hills (where I am weaker) trying to keep up with people. I was just in this little HR zone on my bike and I had a great run. Did not look at the Garmin once during the run. I would have slowed/stopped had I seen what my HR was doing there... LOL! Then, after I LOVE to parse data. I don't track bike mile splits, but usually track mile run splits (although my HIM was Canadian, eh, and I wasn't tracking km splits...). I like to see where I was strong or weak or if I held back too much early on (I usually do). OK... Anyone like doing bike research??!! Got a riddle for you. I currently am in possession of a friend's tri bike that she is selling (no pressure to me at all) -- I can keep it for awhile and test-ride it as much as I want. I saw my fitter today to see if it would even be plausible and he thinks it would work great. BUT! He feels it's priced too high. He'd love to see me get this bike (from this woman, whom he also sees and knows, ironically enough!) at a lower price and then pony up for some better wheels. But fit-wise it's definitely workable with minimal part tweaking (different seatpost maybe, I think that was about it). He gave me some guidelines for fit so I can try other/newer bikes. I am going to do research to build a case for what I think is a fair price for this bike. But if anyone has time on their hands and geeks out on this sort of thing, I'd welcome your opinions (with supporting documents if you have them). I'm not disclosing what she's asking or what bike guy suggested (I will tell you later if you're super-duper curious). Carbon Cobra Wing bull horn with Profile Carbon Stryke aero bars Velocity Spartacus wheels with almost new Michelin Pro Race tires Custom Paint (8 of 50) Bike is 2003 frame, raced three summers of triathlon sprint through 1/2 IM. Problem with pricing a used talon is they are now sold by BikesDirect.com You can get a brand new Talon SL with Red components for $1995, $1895 for Dura-Ace/Ultegra and if you go with cheapie wheels $1399 So I guess it would come down to the price really, if they are offering the bike for much, much cheaper than new, then it's probably a good deal, if it's close to the price listed above, not so good. I'll look around for similar sales, a lot can depend on the components. |
