i don't like it.  buying something like this from a friend is never a good idea.  not just a good friend but any friend.  especially for an 8 year old frame when you're training for your first IM.  especially in a community this small.  and already a potential bad seed has been planted with the disparity between what the fitter said and what she wants.

"I am going to do research to build a case for what I think is a fair price for this bike."   you really need to build a case against a friend.

"from this woman, whom he also sees and knows"

I totally get your point... have thought through that as well. However, it could be a great bike for me if the price were right. (Fitter argues it would be an awesome bike to use for 2-3 years and then I can upgrade to something really fancy... Although I told him that's not really my strategy as I think my engine needs enough work not to warrant a fancy bike in a few years. After all, I have been pleased as punch with my road bike for nearly 3 years.) Really, I'm thinking if I had some similar bike pointers then I could say to her why I feel a lower price would be better. All that said, I have also ridden a bike that I LOOOOOOOOOOVE and fitter has pretty much OK'ed it for me, pending the confirmation of one measurement. Plus I intend to shop around a bit now that I am armed with information about my sizing needs.

swbkrun - 2010-03-25 1:09 PM Ok... All the talk of the watches.... What is point of the Garmin for your race?  I guess I understand on the run (see how your mile splits are), but why on the bike?  If the course is advertise at a 56 mile bike, then you know you are biking 56 miles, if it is advertised @ a 24 mile bike then you know you are biking 24 miles.  I love technology as much as anyone, and do use a garmin on when I am training.  I like to use google earth, and catch evelation gain and loss, but in a race.... The course is already mapped out.

What am I missing?

I am so in the dark when everyone is talking about your gadgets, doodads and thingamagigies. I must be the caveman of the group. I swim and try to keep everyone else in sight. I bike until I reach the end and then I run after some pace booty. No fancy electronic gear to track my heart beat etc. I figure if my heart is still beating that is a good thing but then maybe that's why I am not finishing in the top of the group. I do have an Ipod to try and keep pace when training but when race time comes around I am on my own with the other 400/500 people.

awesome post rob.

you're not the only caveman in the group. i do know a little about that gps thingy though.  but damn, after tracy's list the other day does this just make me less of a triathlete?

i wonder what they did WAAAAYYYYYY back then?

I mean everyone today HAS to train and race with a HRM, some sort of power, hire a coach, blog about it and most importantly tell everyone not doing this to....

oh. wait a minute... she doesn't do any of that.

Great photos, Fats! Do you techno-geeks also think that this helps us take our mind off of things being HARD??!! I mean, I definitely think my gadgets make me train harder/smarter/faster. And they save time -- I used to spend A LOT of time driving running routes to figure out how far I went! Forget it if you were on the trails!!

Funny, when many people start using a HRM, they realize they have been running too fast much of the time. Me, I learned I was a total slacker!!!!!!!! (Some things never change, right John?!) My running got tons faster when I started using GPS/HRM.

Speed, cadance, Heart Rate, and the alarm that goes off every 10 minutes to tell you to drink.   geeze man Wink

I understand HR, but does speed and cadence dictate how you race?

It does for me.  I don't have wattage to guide me so I monitor my cadance by adjusting my gears, otherwise I'll go out too fast and burn up for the run.  For example (per your recommendations) on my half I kept my cadance around 90rpms and adjusted my gears accordingly and didn't worry about the speed.  Even though this kept me at a speed slightly lower than I would have done if I only went on RPE, it kept me at a steadier exertion level and I still had legs for the run.  (at least part of the run, but that's a different story).  If I had tried to hold a certain speed I would have mashed too high a gear and burned out.

i got your back Tracy. I remember Steve told us a looooooonnnnnnggggggggggg time ago, about watching your cadence on the bike. Trying keeping it in that sweetspot of 80-90.

I am not disagreeing w/ this at all. Everyone is just talking about how to switch your Garmin from bike to run, how to charge it on the bike, which hand it should go on, how many watches to wear on each wrist, etc...  I just don't get it, but that's just me.... When I train I train, when I race I race.. All my training w/ gadgets and without have made me ready for race day.

Oh nevermind... Beating a dead horse....

Poor horsey horsey. Yeah, when it comes to racing, I (at long last) have learned to race. (I credit a friend/training buddy with teaching me that just a few years ago.) And I don't tend to look at things while racing... except for the LONG races (HIM, marathon, and up...) where I feel it's important to monitor effort early so you can still put in the effort later. I just like to have the data after to mull over, share with my friend (who is as geeky as I am loves to mull over other people's data!), and think about how I can race better next time.

Hi All

I heard from Kim very early this morning and she did not have a good day.  One of her very closest cousins, Cora suffered a brain aneurysm and then a stroke on the way to the hospital.  She is only 48 years old and in good health other than this incident. She was in surgery at 1am.  While Kim is at the race site, she is waiting to decide what to do.  Thankfully she is with Kathy so she is not alone.  As you can imagine it is a very emotional time for her and she didn't feel she could explain herself to the MG without totally losing it.  Please, please, please if you are the praying kind send some to Cora and Kim.  I am sure she will be in touch when she learns more.

I was just thinking this morning how I was out of patience with this injury... angry and feeling sorry for myself. Then logged on and heard about Cora... it keeps everything in perspective. As inconvenient as this injury is it's really a small problem. Pity party over.

Thoughts and prayers going out for them.

I broke and bought a V-flow Max seat this morning.  I hope to get it on and using next week.  I think my position is good onthe bike, so hopefully the seat solves some issues and then I am close to getting back into the pool!  I may also try to squeeze in a fitting before my first race this year if I cannot dial in my seat properly.

So last week my race this weekend sounded great, it was in the 70's.

Fast forward to today, highs in the upper 40's on Saturday..

BRRR....

So plan for weekend, Drive to parents tonight, spend the night, get up at 0500 and drive 3:00 to smithfield.

Race for an hour (should be less)

Drive 3:00 to my parents house, pick up kids, drive home.

Get up early (still going to be cold), drive for an hour to where I am going to ride.

Ride 3:30, then run 20.

Fun!, Fun!, Fun!

No need to drive routes and works pretty good with trails if you have an idea how they run.

I know, I was reading about Jordan's accident. Who hits someone and doesn't stop?  He was at the top of his game with a lot more to offer, now a setback.

Off to the pool to make some progress.

PS.  Tony, is that a 20 mile or 20 minute run you are doing post ride?  Your kind of scaring me....
