LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LA LA LA LA LA LA...

I don't need to hear about all the crashes and injuries...  I really feel bad for all those who are sick and injured, seriously, but like the auto racers and TdF guys.  They don't talk about things such as the "c" word...  c r a s h...

gcirongirl - 2010-03-31 12:15 PM Argh!!!!!!! My husband is on his way to come and take me to the emergency room. I just fell down the stairs and I think I may have broken my ankle. So much work. So much trainng. So close. It would take a miracle to be able to do the race now. What am I going to do?

Deep breaths...find out if it's broken first.  If it's sprained, you may be able to race.

I had the same immediate reaction when I fell and blew up my hamstring three weeks before Vineman, but ended up getting to the finish line (sucked, but I finished).  Don't let yourself get too distraught until you're sure of the extent of the injury.  *fingers crossed*

I was running in San Fran a month or so before my first, and something happened to my knee.  still not sure what it was.  But I could barely walk on it.  It was like that for several weeks, but it got better.  I was able to ride and swim of course.

Well, it's not broken. Just really badly sprained. The ER doc estimates at least 6-8 weeks of recovery, but we'll see what my sportsmed doc says.

I hope I can still do this.

That exact thing has happened to me more than I care to admit. I always just substitute hard swimming for my other workouts, stretch it as much as I can, and then start hitting the bike when I can stand the pain.

It is not optimal by any means, but it will work. I am not a doctor, nor am I half as smart as one. You can do it though...

When you think about it you only lose 1 1/2 weeks of training. The final 3 weeks are usually taper anyhow. Ice your ankle and stay off it as much as you can for a week. Hopefully you can can ride and swim in a week. Then, shortly after if it's ok start on the eliptical.

Since you're not training now you'll want to foget about most of your taper but hopefully you can get to the start line.

Hope it heals quick!

6 to 8 weeks is what they always say for soft tissue injuries like that (mostly because it's usually true), but that doesn't necessarily rule out racing in 4 1/2 weeks.  Regular icing now and ibuprofen.  Get aggressive (and consistent) with that routine and be careful about coming back to load bearing activities too soon.  Swim when you're mobile enough to get back to that, elliptical, then light walking.

Just take the "I hope" out of that last sentence. I believe with the fitness you've probably gained that "you can still do this"!

I think someone else did this in an earlier post, but I was bored here at work and did some sleuthing on the May 1st St George weather over the last seven years:

2009 Hi 84 Low 55
2008 Hi 66 Low 42
2007 Hi 86 Low 66
2006 Hi 91 Low 60
2005 Hi 78 Low 57
2004 Hi 82 Low 53
3003 Hi 73 Low 50

Ok, what does this tell me? Nothing really. The temps are pretty varied, and we'll all just have to look at the extended forecast 10 days out and pack accordingly. I'll also be ready for a cold swim.
Enjoy!

You certainly have me on volume for March. Those are some big numbers; nice job. See you in St. Geo.

I hate to bring it up, but I think the % of DNF may be astronomical.

YIPEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The doc says that I can swim and bike as much as I want and to ease back into running in a week or so. I won't be as prepared for the race as I would like, but I get to be there!

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I waited till to today to set up accomidations.  Could have bit me in the arse.  I still was able to get a decent place (Crystal Inn) within a couple miles of the Finish.  Took me 45 minutes though - everything is booked.

I assume they will have shuttles to the swim start...  I was also wondering if they will have parking the morning of the race near the finish.  It would be nice to park there, shuttle to the swim, then when I'm done, just throw everything in the car and get back to the hotel...

As for the free shuttles they seem to be offering at a lot of the other hotels, I don't think I need them since I have an auto.

Damnit Andy!  GROSS!!! (Gus and the knee - seriously dude I just ate)

Sorry about that ankle!  Healing vibes your way!

Thoughts on this peeps:   HUGE bike weekend, forget about the other stuff.  Read a bunch about IM France (a hilly mofo) and a lot of people do this about now.

I could really use a change up in the training, and some confidence on the bike.  Could be fun no?

According to the race website, the race-organized shuttles to the swim venue are from the Washington County Fairgrounds.  My wife and dad and I are making plans around that scenario...not counting on parking at the finish until I know for sure it'll be feasible.  Dunno if individual hotels might be offering shuttles to that site or directly to T1 or what-not.

How far are the fair grounds from the finish?  Worse comes to worse, I could ride over there with all my junk after the race...  But if it's anything like the last time, I will not want to be jumping back on my bike when I'm finally done, even if it's only a couple miles (unless it's all downhill).

BTW, I'm planning to get up there on Thursday to check in and look at the expo...  Friday, just check in my bike.

SO, since I'm rolling solo, there looks to be a lot of down time if anyone wants to hang out or grab a meal or something.

When we get a little closer the event, we can workout the details...

Interesting day training yesterday, on my run I had to stop for 5 minutes because 2 Coyotes were staring me down 15 yards in front of me.  I looked to ACME boxes but thankfully none were around.

Also, question for everyone; since my volume is very low I'm not tapering until the final week.  Considering the fact that I'm way behind the power curve, is this a bad idea?

Looks like about 10 miles.
