It's a 1.9km Rectangle based on 3 landmarks At landmark 1, I stop, stand up and a duck or goose lands maybe 100 feet from my left. He is making a noise but not aggressive. He takes off, you know, with his feet just touching the water and fly to about 100 feet to my right.. Takes off again, flies to my left, back and forth. I thought he was injured and couldn't take off and hold his flight So I start swimming again and sure enough, every 30 or 40 stroked while sighting I see this duck/goose flying about 10 feet in front of me. Left to right along my trajectory. He did this for about 15 minutes and disappeared. I cannot figure out what that was all about. He kind of had a reddish/orange head and I had an orange bathing cap. Maybe he thought I was a duck ? He was not super aggressive although there were times he flew 10 feet in front of me. Kind of freaky to put your head up to sight and there is a good size bird flying by, with this feet just touching the water. Very weird.

That's pretty cool/funny. I've been chased by geese on land so it might also be a bit unsettling. Back at the duck.com there is a goose telling his buddies about this big new duck in the 'hood who is pretty darn fast in the water but can't fly worth a damn.

LOL Kim that is too funny! Yeah, I think I read the same post on slowquack.com in the "strange denizens of the pond" thread....

I really think this duck was hitting on me !!!

But talk about a freaky feeling. Lift head to sight and bam a bird flies by 10 feet ahead, over and over.

I was just waiting for it to whack me in the head.

Few hours of work and then I am bailing for the rest of the week.  Heading to Denali National Park for a week of camping.  Tina said for her birthday she wanted to see a moose.  I suspect we'll see more bears then moose though.  No running or biking while gone of course.  Unless running from a wild animal.  I will log that as a race though, with a full on race report.

Well, now a tiny little part of me kinda hopes you get chased by something..... Laughing

Have fun - sounds like a great way to spend an extra-long holiday weekend!

You need to come back up north for Moose.  We saw lots of them driving through New Brunswick on the way to Mont Tremblant.

I tried that approach.  I think Tina is scared of my parents.  lol  Not to mention it would cost 4x's as much to fly out there.

I've seen them swim across the lake at the cottage several times. Pretty impressive to see them come out of the water.
They are huuuuuuuge.

That site gets blocked by my company's IT filters - very adult!

As for a moose coming out of the water, there are few more impressive sights.  As a youngster on a fishing trip in Maine, I saw one swim from a far island (the rack just bobbing away and getting HUGE), come ashore not 40' from where I was sitting drinking my oh-dark-thirty coffee, shake and trot off.  I was in awe AND terrified at the same time…  Very, very cool.

That said, I will be happy enough NOT to see one if I'm biking.  I've seen, and almost been hit by, too darn many deer, turkeys and various rodentia this year already!

I've had moose in my backyard back home.  When I was a kid and dumber then I am now, I actually followed one from my yard about a mile down the beach taking pictures.  I had no concept of how dangerous they were.  It's really quite a wonder I've made it to this age...

Great pic Fred!

I found out this morning that my pool doesn't open until 6:30 am during the summer.  I discovered this at 6:10 am in the parking lot....  ugh.

I was just about to post my unhappiness about my pool as well. Showed up to do the first Finding Freestyle workout, that has at least one drill where you look pretty goofy - Pool Closed at least a week due to repairs. Nowhere else to swim early enough in the mornings near me, so I'm going to be stuck at the municipal pool on lunch looking like a dork for my swim today.

Things could be worse.

Well, today is the first day I attempted to get to the pool.  They changed the schedule last week when school finished for the kids but I didn't think to check.

Agree. It really is very cool that all you guys got to race together. Very much looking forward to seeing James in Lake Placid in a few weeks. And Fred, even though you cannot see them in the pic, just knowing that you are also wearing newtons as well makes it that much better - your race kit is like a rainbow = awesome!

Hopefully everyone in the States is going to be able to take advantage of the long holiday weekend - anybody got big SBR plans? It is looking like we are going to have some nasty weather rolling in a little later today in the south and it promises to stick around for a few days, so we are stuck juggling all of our training plans around and trying to make do. I was hoping to stay off the trainer for the rest of the summer, but it looks like the rain is not going to let that happen. Rats. I am so tired of running and riding in the rain. I think I am going to have a big 'ol bowl of Crybaby Soup for lunch and then mope around for the rest of the day. THAT should fix it

Come hang out with Chris and I in Miami for the 70.3 in October.    I know a certain other member of this group has mentioned it as a possibility as well.

Yeah, you could be aquajogging!  I never had the guts to go to a public pool and do that....eventually, the pool at home got much too cold, so I gave it up altogether -- super boring anyways!

Excited to follow along with your Finding Freestyle journey!

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
