Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow - 2010-07-20 3:51 PM Here's my PSA for the day....Keep the body healthy at all costs. I have a very talented triathlete friend who was training for her 4th IM WI. She's missed roll down twice by 1 person the last two years. She was doing the Door County HIM this weekend and was in a position to take OA female at the 8m mark of the run when she blew out her foot and couldn't run or walk one more step. She's on crutches, out of this year's IM and who knows how much longer after that. All because she continued to train through some serious pain....DUMB, right? PSA over. Yuck, ouch, awful, and sad!! What's the injury and prognosis? So she was having pain prior to the race, eh? It's so hard to listen to the body sometimes when we have our eyes on the prize... so hard. Very good PSA. Thanks for the reminder. Carry on... |

Thanks for the reminder. Carry on... I talked to her a little while ago. She had plantar issues on and off since May, but didn't share that with me. The foot bothered her before the race, but she decided to go for it since she figured she would be out of IM anyway. She went for it and now is suffering the consequences...she isn't sure if the plantar is ruptured or just really irritated. Either way, no running for a few months was her guess. Funny thing is she talked abotu how happy she was with her greater than 19mph bike split on a very tough course...like you Karla, she is a fab swimmer, 1:03ish I think. Now she'll have a lot of time to do both swimming and biking. ![]() Edited by SSMinnow 2010-07-20 7:00 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() IT is a route called rail trail which is a fully paved 2 way strip that runs almost all the way through ohio. You are on the road briefly but not too bad. It was def not what I expected when I was told about it. We went 50 miles south and then road the 50 back to complete the 100 miles |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went for a swim with a small group at Lake Padden tonight. My first OWS of the year (sad, I know) and several in the group already have one HIM done this year and are now training for Lake Stevens. I was a little intimidated when the group decided to swim to the softball fields (long way across the lake, a little more than a 1000 yds out). The highlights from my swim: My longest OWS and by far the furthest I have been able to maintain bilateral breathing in the open water. And to top it off - as another guy and I, the first finishers, were waiting for the others he asked me if I swam a lot - no, swimming background? - nope. "Wow- you move really well through the water, I was pacing off you the whole time and I didn't need to sight." That made my day. |

AWESOME. ![]() I didn't know Jack Nicholson did triathlon!! I also didn't know he grew his hair out. Not sure who that is but that is a very expensive bike, I would love to have one, super aero. Those wheels are vintage aero, not probably as good as they are made today but probably worth a lot to a collector. Can't tell whose signature that is on the bike. |

Keep it up with the bilateral breathing, it helps a ton if you get forced to swim in some chop from a bad direction. Awesome swim! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow - 2010-07-21 5:27 AM How many of you are so excited you can barely sleep because your racing this weekend? Throw off some of that nervous energy by telling us all about your race plans! Weekend off before the busy August schedule of 4 races. I hope to get a long bike and a long run in and enjoy some R&R at home. Heat: We have a love hate relation. I both love and hate it. If you would have asked last night, I hated it. I grew up enjoying practicing and working out in the heat, what better way to get a good sweat in right? My hydration plans vary, I focus mostly on staying properly hydrated through the day, avoid coffee, alcohol and even tea a few days prior to the race, drinking more water than normal. Race morning typically involves a diluted Gatorade or just water while setting up etc. I currently just carry one bottle on the bike, typically filled with iced Infinit, which is normally warm by the time I get on anyway. Some days I just carry water. I make sure to drink at least once every 10 minutes, even a small sip. Taking too much at a time makes my stomach slosh, and things get uncomfortable. Race runs, typically take water at every station, if not multiples, one for drinking the other for cooling. For training, I can do about 45 minutes of high intensity workouts and only suffer moderately without something to drink and still be able to catch up when I get home, much beyond on that and I have to carry water with me where I typically take somewhere around 4 ounces every mile. As much as I would like to get up and run in the mornings, it does not typically happen, so I tend to run in the heat of the day (somewhere between 3 and 6 PM) I figure you will never know what race day will be like, so training in extreme heat gets me used to that. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No race for me as usual. However, I am VERY excited to go on vacation tomorrow. Not super excited about the drive but it is what it is. We are headed to Mt. Rushmore and then over to Yellowstone for 5 days of camping (Andy, I'll let you know. Ran for thirty min 1/1 yesterday and by the time I got home I could feel my knee. Iced it all night. Will definitely be going for the PRP injections at the first of the year. However, this means I'm definitely a cheerleader for LV. I hope everyone has a great weekend racing or otherwise. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No racing here. We are taking the fam to Victoria, BC (via ferry) for a quick jaunt. It's one of our favorite quick vacation get-aways -- feels like going to Europe and it's only a 3-hour boat ride! I'm hardly one to ask about heat, ha ha!! Prior to my IM, I added Nuun to my water for 2-3 days and worked hard to make sure I drinking enough (monitored by urine color and frequency). I'm not sure about during racing -- maybe adjust RPE depending on HOW hot it is? I am off to Arizona in a couple of weeks and need to do a long run while there, but I have a feeling I'll do it in a treadmill as it could be 90 degrees or more by 8am and I can only get up so early on vacation (especially with my party animal in-laws)... Good luck to anyone racing!!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No race for me this weekend. Planning a longish ride saturday and a longish run on Sunday. Heat - you have to train in it to get used to it. Similar to Jeff, I do most of my running at lunch time during the week so this time of year I get plenty of opportunity to get used to the heat. Many of my rides are also don in the heat. I don't go the distances that some of you go so I pay less attention to hydration. Even in the heat, if runs are around an hour, I don't bring water (which is essentially the same rule for me when it is not hot). On rides, I tend to drink some even under an hour but still not much. On my 40 mile ride last weekend (long for me) I had about 24 oz of water and a gu. I could definitly see needing more as the rides get longer. |

Going to Bike and run while down there and overall just enjoy the scenery. Heat: I also love and heat it. I am a Florida Native and now live in Georgia. I am no stranger to heat. However, I had my once a year encounter with athletics and overheating. Not fun. I was at the track workout last night. Warm up went well. did 2 x 400 and felt like I pulled a muscle in my ribcage area. I sat down for 10 minutes and then started feeling bad. After 10 minutes of being still. Almost passed out but was fine overall. Heat isn't something to be messed with. I always worry about those who say they don't need water in the heat of the day. Heat index was ready well over 104 here with a ridiculous humidity rating. Stay safe out there kiddos! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm racing!!!!! sort of. I have an open water mile swim event on Saturday. I had originally registered for the 2 mile swim but decided this week to drop it back to the one mile. My reasoning was I also have a 30 mile bike ride, a 10K and an 8 mile run to do this weekend and I haven't swam over 1 mile since last November, therefore there was no point in killing myself on the swim and loose out on the rest of my training. Trying to stay focused on Augusta and be well rounded. The heat..... if anyone knows how to conquor this let me know. I've found my tummy is going sour in this heat and I want nothing but ice water. That is difficult on the bike b/c my frame is too small to hold those insulated bottles. Guess I need to find an insulated aero bottle. |

It's mostly the architecture in the harbor area (where we stay), the fact that it's a very walking-friendly city... gorgeous flowers hanging in the summer, lots of awesome outdoor energy. It's just the "feel" of it -- hard to put my finger on it! Do you get there much? Do you know what I'm talking about? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sam and I are doing a sprint, was the first one she did so I think this is the 4th year doing it. LOL, We get back friday night, daughters birthday party Saturday, kids go home with parents, we get back in the car and drive 90 minutes to stay in another hotel so we can get up early on sunday to do the race, sleeping in your own bed is highly overrated, with business travel, staying at my parents for a race 2 weeks ago and this trip I have slept in my own bed once in 2 weeks... I would really like to win my AG here, been BOP (1st year) 2nd (2nd year) and 4th (last year) 300M swim, 10Mi bike and 5k. Need to go 58 minutes or so, maybe faster to win AG. |
