copa2251 - 2011-09-28 5:12 PM Linda - sorry about the back, should be lots of time to get it fixed still.Roni - I love the photo's, the kids all want to visit America next year so maybe we'll do some camping too?Suzy - love the teenager sign, I'll show my 13 year old...George - be careful with your post-marathon recovery, might even be a good idea to take half an aspirin for a few days??No racing for me, Noosa tri is now 4 1/2 weeks away and I might fit in a sprint before then.

Ha!! In our house, we forget that ibuprofen can be taken in twos, not fours...!! Half? Why bother!!

The aspirin would be for it's anti-thrombotic effect not pain relief, 150mg daily for a few days after the marathon and flight might be prudent along with compression socks, hydration and lots of walking.

DVT risk after marathons is very real and adding a 12 hour flight could spell trouble...

Also, how do you post via your iPad without it putting it all together without line breaks etc??? I've tried a couple of times and it just ignores my formatting and shoves it all into one long line (like my post above!)

Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine:
March 2011 - Volume 21 - Issue 2 - pp 126-130
Conclusions: Results suggest that the combination of air travel and marathon running induces an acute hypercoaguable state; this hemostatic imbalance is exaggerated with increasing age.

Linda- I am so sorry to hear of your setback.  Sending you many healing vibes.

Roni- great pics!

Happy Anniversary, Sam and Tony!

Good luck to all racing peeps... and their sherpas.

I almost forgot about our racing weekend.  Plans for the kids first trip to WDW coincided with the Wine and Dine 1/2 marathon and kids races too.  Couldn't pass it up.  Both my kids will race in the morning (my daughter's very first) and my race begins at 10pm.  I'm not sure how I'll even function at that hr since I'm usually fast asleep by then and when compounded against the very little sleep I've gotten this week pulling everything together, it could make for a very long night.  Not to mention rough early morning at the parks.  Any advice for nighttime racing?  To nap or not to nap?  Finally got my "costume" somewhat finished.  I know not really complete but we're not allowed to wear masks and I just never got around to purchasing black arm coolers and black calf sleeves to get more of the total effect. Maybe at the expo.

Awwww baby moose are sooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck racers - George, Kris and Jarrett.  Race hard - have fun!  And enjoy the ride Suzy and swim Kim (this weekend, right?)

Sorry about the back Linda, rest up and come back stronger.

No racing for me just a soccer game and anniversary dinner!  Happy 17th crazy goatee man!!!!! (As he is starting to be referenced on the local cross circuit)

And finally getting so excitement for next Weds.  We are surprising the kids with a short trip to Disney.  Ok I know it's goofy but we are making up for our flu ridden last trip.  So it's pick them up from school and drive to airport.  Tony wants to see how long it takes them to figure it out.  I asked my son this morning if he's gotten too old for Disney.  He gave me one of those crazy kid looks and said "Are you crazy? Everybody's a kid at Disney.  You are never too old."

Good luck Christina and have fun!  Don't worry about the timing.  Disney has a way of pumping energy into you at anytime of the day.  I never thought I could function at 3am to get to the 5am marathon start but it was awesome!  Tony and I thought about that 1/2 but didn't work out w/ the school schedule.

Holy Cats!  It is time to talk racing again!  Who is ready for some action? share the details!

For those of us not racing, have you been doing anything special to recover from the season? share it!

HIM on Sunday.  It is the Half Full Tri in Columbia, MD.  It runs on roughly the same course as the Columbia Tri.  Very hilly.  Should be challenging but fun.

Fixed that for ya!!

David, I just type normally on the ipad and it does word wrap for me... not sure how/why? What I don't understand is why I can't see any formatting options from there, so I can't make anything pink and pretty. Grrrrr.

Have a great half, William!!

I'm off to see if I can run up some hills on Cougar without whining. Or at least with only minimal whining...

Hope the run was fun, you two!  (ryan makes 3?

Christina, that is such a fun outfit for your night half marathon!  I haven't ever done an evening race, sounds fun...I would imagine a nap would be good...no high heels in the park, oh wait that was Roni in Vegas before her crazy 51k midnite run!  Have fun!

It is so quiet in here today...i have bananas that need to be made into banana muffins tonite...anyone have a good, healthy, quick recipe I can try?  I realized this morning that we don't even have sugar in our house except for the raw type and some brown sugar.  I guess we haven't baked any sweet things in a long time.  We use agave nectar and honey for sweetening things.

Christina- If you can get a nap, I would, but if not you should be fine. The adrenaline for the race will keep you awake. Just don't stay up all night the night before, and as Kim said, high heels are a bad idea too LOVE the outfit!

Kim- I LOVE agave and honey! That's all we use around here too. I don't have any recipes for you though, sorry. If I made muffins, I would eat them all, lol.

Exciting step in coming back to triathlon for me today (I have REV3 Portland in my sight)... I rode my bike OUTSIDE. I know it seems silly, but when I haven't ridden for awhile I have a lot of anxiety about getting out there. I finally did it today. I biked on a multi-use path, it was slooow, and I was really nervous at first, but by the end of the hour my confidence was back and I was loving it. Yay, me!!!

Ryan made 3, Heidi made 4, Kira made 5, and Dana made 6. A fun run on Cougar!! I think the boys chose an easier run today. That, and maybe (just maybe) my legs are getting stronger. Steve reminded me to focus on the exhale -- that was a good pointer. Ryan and I are discussing our Rev3 plans. We are swapping help -- I am going to help get his swim faster, and he's going to help get my bike time down. Game on!!!

Banana bread!!! Yum!! Here is an outline of a recipe I use. I oftentimes use applesauce instead of oil, honey instead of sugar (brown sugar also adds a nice, rich flavor; if I use "white" sugar, mine is organic evaporate cane juice, so a wee bit less refined). I usually use whole wheat flour -- my bread comes out pretty dense. If you prefer a lighter loaf use some white (unbleached is healthier!) flour. I oftentimes throw in 2TB or so of ground flax, just cuz I'm always trying to add stuff that is good for you to the kiddo's food. Finally, I use many more bananas than recipes call for -- my Grandpa Carlson swore that if you doubled the bananas you'd get the best loaf, no matter which recipe you use. Enough said! Here is my recipe!

(From the Fire Gals Hot Pans Cookbook, published in Garrison, Iowa [many family recipes in here] )

NOTE: Recipe as published. I never use shortening. I opt for olive oil if I use oil, occasionally I'll splurge and use butter.

1 c. suger
1/4 c. shortening
2 eggs
4 T. milk
1/2 t. salt
1 t. soda
2 c. flour
3 mashed bananas (I'll use all I have on hand -- the blacker the better)
chopped nuts (optional)
2 T. cinnamon (my addition!)

Combine sugar and shortening, cream together. Add eggs and milk and mix well. Add alt, soda, and flour, mix together. Stir in bananas. Pour into prepared bread loaf (my volume varies depending on how many bananas I use, so sometimes a giant loaf, sometimes 2 small loaves) or muffin tin. Bake at 350 until done. (Recipe calls for 1.5 hours for bread, muffins for :30-:45. I check frequently after 50 min. as my family likes their bread more gooey.)

One more tip: If your bananas have turned and you don't have time to make bread, just toss the bananas in the freezer, peel and all. Thaw them (in a bowl -- they drip!) and use 'em when you're ready to make bread. I have many in my freezer -- this weekend when the weather turns crappy I'll likely do some baking.

Edited to fix typos and cuz I had more to say...

That is what I love!!!  Instant help with my banana muffins!  And my bananas are so ripe, I have been ordered to either make the muffins or compost.  Thank you, Kyla!

Roni!!!  Congrats on getting out on that bike, yay!  Portland Rev3 is looking more festive everyday...I am trying to see if I can swing travel up there, but no shipping my bike, it will have to be a crazy road trip, I think.  Wish I had a big old Airstream that we could take to the roads.

I am so sad.  I have a set of twins that had a placenta disease called Twin to Twin Transfusion syndrome.  We had fetal surgery at 19 weeks with a 50% chance of both surviving and an 85% of one surviving.  We were so blessed that both survived the surgery.  Well, I just had a friend lose one of her twins to this disease after the surgery and my heart breaks.  I hate that we got so lucky and I know so many others who continue to lose their beautiful babies everyday.

Rachel, that just breaks my heart. I'm so sorry for your friend. I'm sure it's like re-living the experience all over again for you, only with the worst outcome. I'm so thankful that your children survived, that must have been such a scary experience. Hug all of your babies tight. I know I sure will. Hugs to you, too!
