Seeing Skrat called me out to write a race report, I will. Darn that manatee peer pressure.
The Commitment Day 5k turned out to be a "fun" run, so bibs but no timing. The energy and enthusiasm was infectious. There were about 1000 people (lots of families and people doing their 1st 5k) or so on Ford Field, which is where our Detroit Lions lose play. I arrived way too early but the start was inside the field so it was warm and toasty. They took our pictures and we had to sign a big sign with what healthy lifestyle change we were committing to. Lots of great warm up music and dancing. I need to download some of those songs and use them as a warm up. It was a great fun. My commitment is: To make my health a priority and consistency/follow through. The run was sort of a run/walk for the 1st 2 miles and then I warmed up. It is really weird that I now "feel" it when I am not warm. When I am warmed up, I am the energizer bunny and can go and go. It usually takes me 2-2.5 miles and then my body remembers how to run. The last part of the run was GREAT!!! Warm, fast, strong, flowing, etc... The run was long. It was a 3.9 mile 5k, according to my running buddy's Strata. I know it was longer than 3.1 so I am calling it 3.5 miles for my logs. I can't convince myself it was 3.9 but I know 3.1 and that was definitely longer. For my time 44:49, 3.5 miles is probably about right. I am excited to see where this Big Sur training takes me. I looked down and saw my cellulite jiggling on my thighs (gross, I know). I know that the past 6 months of hell have taken their toll on my fitness. I have gained 15lbs since April. Time to recommit to ME! I spent a lot of time in 2012 trying to get and keep my family healthy, now it is my turn. And so it begins....As of today, I have run every day in 2013 and that momentum will continue!! Woohoo! Way to start off this year! Really like your commitment. You Manatees inspire me. |

I think the energy and enthusiasm at these races is part of what makes me come back to racing again and again.
As for my Polar Dash 10k, it was very cold and I was probably still drunk... oops At race start it was about -8F actual temp so I was rocking some windstopper briefs, one pair of tights, one pair of running pants, three base layers, a jacket and the normal gloves/gator/hat. It took until mile two before I could get the tightness out of my calves so really I just kept the pace pretty easy throughout the race and had a 30 second walk at about mile 4.5 when my stomach started doing flips. I guess stopping drinking 6 hours before the race might have been pushing it. Overall I am decently happy with my 53:ish time. It was motivating to see the HM runners that were zooming ahead of me on the same course and hopefully that little inspiration will last until my first HM in March. Oh yeah this was my first "race 10k". Thanks for all the inspires and motivation already manatees! I'm not really happy with these totals and I have quite a bit of room for improvement. I need the most improvement on my run but consistent biking and swimming are also goals for this new year. Happy New Year everyone!

Gotta hand it to all of you in the far North. I have lived in semi tropical places most of my life. One day I want to come up yonder and experience the cold, go to an ice carnival, and ice fish, preferably in one of those low rent ice shacks that are de rigueur. One with a hot tub would be nice. Well done on the race. Edited by MadMathemagician 2013-01-01 3:56 PM |

Great job on everybody's races and totals too! Mine are certainly more than 2011 (my first year amongst other athletes...), but I will improve on them in 2013.
The majority of the 'yard work' and 'home improvement' was actually mostly job related stuff at the zoo...It still amazes me how physically challenging it is to build/renovate exhibits. This year there will be far more in the tri disciplines, but also far more strength too...but...in 4 months, there will be so much MORE time to work out cause I will be DONE WITH SCHOOL!!!!!!! I'm kinda happy about that. Okay, time to get to today's fun and sweat! oh, and by the way....getting to know all the Manatees made my year--I am thankful to have all of you in my life. |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Got a 6km walk in with the dogs today. Really foggy out there, but a nice walk on the dykes. Ok, Manatees, I need a reality check. After asking about HM or HIM first, I put in a training plan for the HIM in early June. That puts me at starting a 20 week training plan on Jan 12th! Eek! I feel like with my achilles issue, in addition to being sick, I haven't trained in so long, I can't get ready that quickly. I am still not running full on, just short (~3km) run walks. Actually, I did a 5km run 1&1/2 min, walk 2 min on the 23rd with no issues, so suspect I should be good to go, just want to see my PT one more time. Can you guys have a look at my logs and tell me what you think? I just need some objective eyes, rather than looking through my virus-tinted lenses . Thanks! |

I had planned a nice 2 hour ride with a 30 minute run but the weather just wouldn't cooperate. I ended up with an easy 45 minutes on the trainer and then went out for a very successful "first brick of the season" run. Anyone swim with paddles. I ordered some over the holidays. I'm going to try them this week hopefully Friday. Swimming is a big area of needs improvement for me. I'm also going to try and video my swim today for my coach to analyses. I'll post it here also and welcome any comments. |

Sorry! amd723 - 2013-01-01 10:40 AM cdban66 - 2013-01-01 9:07 AMI started doing some analysis of the past 2 years, comparisons if you will. Here is what I found: Those are some impressive improvements Chris. Congrats. In fact, with those numbers I think you should participate in Rev3 Florida not volunteer ( although volunteers are great) );I refuse to compare my 2011 and 2012 numbers because they would only depress me! I think what 2012 taught me is that I am no longer able to recover from doing stupid things as easily as I used to be. So, 2013 will find me paying attention to the signals my body is sending me and doing a better job of recognizing the difference between normal work out soreness and injury.
If I keep this up, I'll be a force to reckon with in 2019!!!!!! Seriously though, I do believe that a few more improvements will be seen again this year. I notice that time is the difference maker right now, if I put in more, than I get out more. I do need to up the intensity a bit, being aware of the chance of injury at the same time. So, what do you got? Any observations from 2012? Thanks, but a 70.3 is not in the plans for this year. I am real happy to see the improvements and I am committing to some training goals this year in an effort to improve more.. But I just don't see 70.3 being something for this year. And I am impressed that you have a HUGE takeaway from 2012. One of the best things I've been learning is the cues that my body gives, what they are and how much I can or can't do. It sounds like you have learned that this year. |

My Timex is all setup with correct personal information and after my 40 minute trainer ride this morning it estimated 535 calories expended, when I put the workout info into my BT log it estimated 360 calories. I suspect that my HRM is estimating incorrectly but does anyone have any idea why. It wouldn't matter but I am counting calories at the moment in order to lose about 20lb. |

I don't know anything about the Timex. I have used Polar and Garmin and this is my experience. When I first started training I had a Polar HRM. The calorie count did not seem right. When I got serious about training I decided to go to a local fitness lab and have my lactate threshold, etc. tested. Part of that was VO2Max. Well, when I plugged in the VO2Max, all of a sudden, the calorie count was much more accurate! (Accurate compared to the calorie expenditure results in that the lab got.) I do not find the Garmin to be accurate. I have not done the New Leaf testing but I suspect that if I did that and plugged in the data, it would get a lot more accurate -- http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/11/how-calorie-measurement-works-on-garmin.html I'm not sure which Timex that you have but you might want to search DC Rainmaker's blog for more information. That's one of the better sources that I've found. |
