I'm doing the MS 150 tomorrow.  It's was one event Cindy really promoted.  Her mother had MS.  I'm pretty much healed from my crash.  Still have a tiny bit of pain in my left elbow.  I'll try to make it as far as I can tomorrow but if I seems like I'm making my left arm worse I'll cut it shorter. I'm excited and sad to do the ride.  I'm also a member of my local ham radio club.  My friends from the club are doing communications and sag for the ride.

CyborgQueen - 2010-07-22 8:37 PM Sorry for lack of posting here...it's been absolutely CRAZY this week.  I was volunteering at World Deaf Nation Expo (over 15,000 people).  All my free time was taken by the expo, training, and school.

Today, I got to work as crowd control for Marlee Matlin signing.  The coolest thing was, I didn't have a camera or anything, so I asked her if she could sign my shirt and she was more than happy to do that. It was the second time I met her, so that was cool.

Other than that...I've learned a lot about being patient quickly because of all the strange requests and many different questions etc etc. What a PIA - AND on top of that, some of the deaf people are from different countries so I had to sign differently or use a different "slang" language in hopes to communicate with them.

It was definitely an interesting experience, and pretty tricky to do with my tri training!

That is interesting. I had no idea that different countries had different 'languages' for signing. I guess I assumed that sign-language was universal.
I loved Maree Matlin when she was on Seinfeld. Kramer was the ball boy at the US Open Tennis....remember?

Yeah - same concept as regional slangs/dialect. Such as pop/soda, sub/hoagie, etc. The sign for "brother" in China is "flipping the bird". Seriously! The letter "T" in ASL (American sign language, or pretty much the alphabet for English) means the F word in China. So it can be a bit tricky.   There's even "Universal Sign language", which is more of pictorial language than words (hard to explain), but I personally do not know how to sign Universal Sign Language, but I can figure it out as I have better reception skills than signing skills. What's even harder is I "think" in English so I sign as if I spoke in English. Many deaf people with ASL or any other sign language tend to just break down the spoken language into a pictorial language  (they don't sign the word "the", "of", etc). Such as "I'm going to the store tomorrow." : SPOKEN ENGLISH. In ASL it would sign out as "Me store go tomorrow" or "store me tomorrow will". So yeah.

Anyways - yes I saw that Seinfeld episode. Hilarious. :-)   There was one episode of CSI that Grissom was signing (horribly!!!) to someone, but it wasn't subtitled or anything so I had to translate that to my fiance. Kinda funny.   I don't think anyone can read lips THAT well in the Marlee Matlin episode.  There can be confusions though - Mommy and Bobby has the exact same mouth movement....hence why my mom thought it was hilarious that I called her Bobby for a long time until she found out that I was deaf. :-)

I called Funnel Cake "funeral cake". My grandma had to call my mother at work because I wanted some "Rape Juice" (grape juice).

I am really sorry to hear that, I just volunteered for a ride that was a memorial for a great guy in my area that was hit. Cell phones are a plague to all driving and traffic accidents, I swear that this is why I ride on the bike trails. I can get the same enjoyment and mileage with less worry of getting hit.

This is the group I am working with: considerbiking.org they are really trying to help columbus become more bike friendly. I recently lost some friends on facebook for their BS comments about how annoying bikers are on the road. I do not take kindly to people talking badly about what we do.

Well I have been quiet. There has been a stomach bug that has plagued my family recently and has hit me. Well I passed out yesterday around 4 pm and woke up around 8 pm. I started watching TV and realized it was 2 or 3 am and I thought well I might as well stay up since I get up at 6:30 AM. Can I say how much I am regretting that now? I can barely stay awake.

Words escape me, Tiana. I am so sorry and this tragedy just breaks my heart and leaves me speechless. The photo of the man guiding her bike on that ride -- ugh -- it really got to me. Please take care of you, and I am so sorry for your loss. She sounds like a truly amazing woman. Damn.

What a story, and another great biker is killed foolishly.  Brings tears to my eyes and makes me mad at the same time.

This story actually picked my mood up for the day, made my issues seem really small.  Milwaukee got 7 inches of rain in a little over an hour last night and close to 9 inches in about 3 hours and I have spent the last 24 hours pumping, cleaning, etc. a friends basement that is out of town, my aunts basement, and one of my rental propertie's basement.  At least my house was bone dry!  I have never seen rain like this, big trees just falling over roots and all, man hole covers being blow off in the street from storm sewer pressure, sinkholes (in Wisconsin?), they even evacuated 3 blocks in one neighborhood because basement walls were failing due to water pressure.  Pictures if you are interested:

http://www.jsonline.com/

But all this doesn't compare to the story above.  I still got to ride yesterday and still got to swim today, and I may even get a run in yet tonight if the wife gives me enough leash.

Have a great weekend, Enjoy your races, Be safe, and Represent the MG!

Dino

fattyfatfat - 2010-07-23 11:28 AM awesome story rob.  potential clients for your new business... lie and say it was the plan all along.  pat em' on the back and say great job.

glen i agree with george. i'd also take a look at what you have the day or two following bridgelands.  if you have a big workout planned then i'd try and switch it with a lighter workout later in the week.

good stuff doug.  hopefully i'll get the rundown next week. then have him run me into the ground on the chattahoochee trail.  unless he claims to be "busy" with his girlfriend.

Blind side him, call him and tell him you are a potential customer. Then have him meet you somewhere near where you want to run and then make him go with you. You don't think he'll see this post do you?

OK you two....WTH    Just because i hurt my shoulder doesn't mean I can't READ!!!

You are welcome DR and it was great talking to you....John...you on the other hand have no shot at getting any information.

Hi gang,

Back from the land of corn, cows and tornadoes.  I think I'll stick w/ the East Coast heat waves.  It was great to see the MN folks and I managed to bury the hatchet w/ the step mother-in-law.  Apparantly for 15 yrs. we both thought the other hated each other.  LOL

Still not much time to post - my daughter's bday party is tomorrow at 11am so I need to get cracking w/ food prep and party assembly.  It's at a small local park up the street and the heat index is only supposed to be 110.  UGH!  Oh well - short party.  Then we hit the road an hour later to drive to our race on Sunday.  I know we are crazy.  But I love it!  Also get to meet Linda (Terp).

And then I should finally be able to catch up - kids are gone through Thurs.  And for the month of August - no school, no sports, no activities and quiet work load.  Yeah - I am dedicating Aug. to me and my OBX HIM training!  Sub 6 hr. here I come!!!!!!!!

tritiny - 2010-07-23 12:00 PM It's been a tough week here.  Last Saturday morning my friend Cindy was was struck and killed while riding.  The funeral was yesterday.   Hard to type this without crying again.

Tiana

I am so sorry to hear your news Tiana. My prayers go out to you in this time of need. Also to your friend who is now in a better place where stupid drivers cannot hurt her.

Tiana--really sorry to hear about your friend and I am sure as you ride today you will think of her a lot.  Be strong!

Glen--agree with George, I would stick to the plan.  Unless this is a killer A race for you, no taper needed.  Just go out and put the hammer down.

Andy--camping? really? is there a potty in your tent?

Tracy--while I don't have any cowboy boots or frilly skirts, the look doesn't strike me as all that odd...of course that's coming from the girl with the oddest tan lines in the Midwest

Kyla--two scoops is a 120 calories.  Given my size I usually only do one at bedtime, 60 cals, 12g of protein....well worth it.

And now for Rob--I am so happy you're part of the MG.  Whenever I feel like I take the prize for dumb moves, you pop out and save me....glad you got a really loooooooong swim in, but seriously be careful.  It's one thing to get lost on your bike and a very different beast to get lost in a lake!

Had a great day yesterday, a super duper threshold ride that I killed and then a boat ride with some visiting friends.  Today, rain.....but even that's ok, short speedwork run and long IM pace swim on tap.  I keep telling coach SJ I only have one swim pace--HIM, IM, Sprint, it's all the same....he doesn't think it's funny ...me, I just want to get out of the water in the same place I started (unlike Rob)!

Whey protein is mentioned in Matt Fitzgerald's book "Racing Weight".  He reccommends it for increasing protein intake, keeping the appetite satisfied, and it does not cause inflamation like milk protein.  This book is really good btw.
