DougRob - 2010-04-13 8:41 AM It is a little high for a used one, but the extra that are included are nice and I have not seen those included before. I might offer $900.

It's official....surgery tomorrow at 3:15 p.m.  Short recovery room time since it is being done at a "Surgical Center" as opposed to a hospital.

Thanks for all the kind words and P.M.'s  You have know idea how much that helps.

I'll be away for at least a few days but I am sure that Suzy will keep the group motivated and I KNOW that John & Rob will fill in my quota of Smart-a$$ comments.

Reno8 - 2010-04-12 7:03 PM
Jeepguy2358 - 2010-04-12 7:37 PM I got some really fantastic news and have to share.  For the past three weeks, I have been unable to run.  I had a pain in my left knee that was so painful, at times I couldn't even walk.  I went to the doc for some xrays.  They showed nothing.  His initial thought was a tear in the lateral meniscus.  He wanted me to wait on an MRI to see if it would heal on it's own.  It has gotten better, but has not fully healed, so I went for the MRI today and it shows I have some soft tissue swelling around my IT Band insertion point, but no tears.  He actually said everything looks great!  Now, the plan is to make sure I ice and take NSAID's as needed.  I had gotten to the point of looking past IMLOO for another race later in the year, which I didn't want to do.

As I was leaving, another doc in the group who did IMFL this year, suggested I get my bike fit checked.  It turns out, the guy he recommended is amazing.  He works directly with a PT when doing the fitting.  Together, they do a full physical analysis and find the best possible position for my body type.  My fitting is next Tuesday.  I can't wait!!!

Great news.  Hope the bike fit and the time off will be all that you need.

I was not so fortunate at the Doctors today.

Found out I am going to have my 3rd shoulder surgery since March 8th.  This time to remove the 2 plates and 4 screws that came loose and to wire everything together.....6 more weeks in a sling and 4 weeks of rehab and I will be as good as new any 57 y.o can be.

No races for the entire year....well maybe a late fall marathon or something like that but no tri races in 2010.

I am not as concerned about having another surgery as I cam keeping my job....I only worked about a week in a new job back in late Feb. when this started and they have held the job this long....I am afraid they may have to move on and I really can't blame them.

We shall see.

Steve, that's really a bummer...  I sorry to hear it.  I hope all goes well with the surgery and they get you fixed up permanently this time...

Steve...Sooo sorry to hear about the surgery.  Hope they get it right this time.  If you'd quite hanging from the chandeliers maybe your arm would heal.

Roni-  Nice bike porn.  Looks great.

Suzy-  I have a PQ and love it.  However I use it for one side for energy drink concentrate (Infinite)and the other half water ( I only fill half way due to weight).  I still used hand ups to refill the water.  I did not put any other bottles on the bike beyond this.  Practice at Lone Star.  5-6 min could put you on the podium.  This is FREE TIME.

Have a good one and hug your loved ones.

Kelly, you have had some rough luck lately!!! Glad enveryone is okay. Maybe you should just stick to sitting at your comupter and posting some more pictures!!! Wink

Yesterday I met with my coach, his wife (also a coach) and three other of their athletes for a run/strength workout. The running (2.62 miles) was not bad at all. The exercises were a mixed bag.

First the good: I kicked a$$ on the sit-ups, jumping jacks, lateral jumps over an angled beam, vertical leap with one arm over your head, lunge/bar lifts, and push ups.

Now the bad: Apparently I am a little wimp on the monkey bars, pull ups, and something where you lay on an angled platform, grab the bar over your head and then lift your feet over your head.

On the bright side I have a lot of room for improvement.

P.S. Linda this is all set up in Bond Park.

No new toy until this afternoon. Gotta get the workouts done first, ya know. As I always tell my kids: Work first, play later. The toy sitting in my minivan right now is gorgeous, though, and was almost mine. Still could be. But another one is more destined for me, so pretty pink one goes back... stay tuned!!!!!!!!!

Hope all workouts for everyone are going well, unfortunately it looks like we have a few days of rain in store.

A question for the group, especially those with spouses that Tri.  How do you handle the fitness differences between you and your spouse?  I cannot seem to convince my wife that I can go out and ride my bike without needing to push the pace all the time.  She always thinks she is holding me back, and doesn't want it to feel like a leisurely ride for me while she is using it as a workout.  I try to explain that I still enjoy riding with her and can work on techniques if she wants us to both be "working out"

Any thoughts?  Unfortunately I caught the bug and now its biting.

Please post about the fitting. WHat technique they use (Retul, etc.) do they swap out parts, pedals, saddles, etc. Good luck and great news.
If anyone has a video that they want to get their "angles", I have a copy of dart fish. I'd just need about a 10 or 15 second (at most) video. You can even do a quick video with your phone and text it to me:

I will definitely take you up on this offer.  Should be able to get some video shot this weekend.  Have been moving more and more aero all winter since my last fit in Spring of 2009 and I feel good, comfortable, and powerful.  Don't want to drop $200- $300 to get refit if it is not needed and my angles will answer that question for me.

Thanks
Dino

Steve good luck with the surgery....I can assure you that your shoulder will get better.  I have had 3 surgery's on my right side and I still can swim pretty good.  Nothing like John, but I can hold my own!

Just make sure you let it heal.  I made that mistake years ago and it really sucks.

Thanks John.  That's funny.  Although I'm kinda faaar away from making my groupings that tight.  Maybe that's what I should be practicing while I'm being a slacker.

Trevor...NOT.  You'll just have to go back and visit.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.  Need to get to the chiropractor this week but hopefully that's ok.   I was T-boned so it was more of a side impact and not as much whip lash.  Just sore where I hit my head, elbow on the window and where my hip was bruised by the seatbelt.

Anybody have any in's with Ford?  I'll probably get another Expedition.  If you LOVE your SUV tell me why.

I have this issue with my hubby.  Often times I don't join his group rides b/c I don't want to be the one holding them back. I'm lucky that my husband and our riding group is a great group of people that don't make me feel like an anchor.  I'll join them on days when I know they aren't going hard or just want to get out and enjoy the day.  Other times when everyone needs an easy spin then it's no problem.  You could tell your wife there are 2 benefits to be had:  1) easy rides are great for aerobic workouts - people don't go easy frequently enough  2) her spending time chasing you is a great training opportunity for her.  Chasing you (within reason) is going to force her to work harder than she ever could by herself.

Some other options are my hubby will ride along with me when I am running and vice versa.  It is a great way to act as sherpa for the other and spend some time together.

With three kids, my wife and I don't do much training (or anything else for that matter!) together at all!  I typically grab several mornings to swim while she does most of her running in the evenings.  We both squeeze in what we can at lunch time and the weekends we try and coordinate so that we both get in what we want/need to.  Since it is rare that we get to do a run or bike together, she doesn't have any feelings of her holding me back (and I don't mind either!).  She is ultra competitive and sometimes will work too hard trying to set a faster pace but the reality is that she is not that far behind me on the run.

first off, this will be a non-issue in the winter when you ride inside all the time.  this also gives you a great excuse to multirider CT.  credit me for the idea in the review on your blog please.

the best way to convince her is to actually go out there and ride with her.  but keep in mind that you probably aren't going to ride with her to much because of the difference's.  so she needs to find a good group that she's comfortable with.  this gives you an excuse to throw some get together's with the hot tri chicks she'll start hanging out with.

do you have to ride with her?  can you swim and/or run instead?  you can really help her out with her running by working with her as you're running together.  pacing, breathing, form, etc.. and that's only going to help you to i'd think.  track workouts would be similiar to the pool below. you're there together but can still do your own thing.  and here's your excuse to have a kid.  that jogging stroller will slow you down to her pace, no doubt.

swimming together is awesome because you can do your own thing, stop and bs at the wall and race each other.  this is your excuse to bury her then just say it was all just part of your workout.  you gotta keep her honest, ya know!

I will say by far this is the hardest thing to balance. I have another friend whos husband does tri and she and I have similar issues.

I am insanely competitive when it comes to sports and my husband. If you knew me well, you would know that competitiveness is NOT in my blood. Not at all. However with my spouse, something just kicks in unnaturally. Is has caused a good deal of frustration in our training because we train for the same events with almost the same training schedule. Some parts of it work beautifull while some, not so much.

I have the greatest frustration on the bike because my husband is much more talented than I am. I do have the same sentiments that I feel bad that he essentially "chaperones" me on the rides and does not get a decent workout himself. Luckily our fitness levels aren't too terribly far apart on the bike (when I am on my tri bike) but I do know that when he rides with me it is not a hard effort like he could get when riding with the faster group.

Honestly what has helped us the most is to seperate our training. The companionship while training can be great but in the end it honestly was causing more damage than benefit. So now we might run at the same time and on the same route, but we dont necessairly run together. That way he can run faster but we still see each other and can check on each other. For the Bike, he has an additional group ride each week that I do not go on because of my work schedule and he can ride with the fast kids. And we dont swim together because we swim at two different pools at different times due to work schedules.

The other area that has been tough is taking suggestions, advice and tips from each other. It is a communication issue that we work though and have had to be very patient with each other. Talking to other couples who tri, it seems to be a common issue mainly with one person (typically the less speedier one) feeling like they are constantly being critiqued and told they are not pushing themselves hard enough.

We have learned that sometimes it is best to wait until you can sit down and have a conversation about the sport rather than to try and provide on the spot advice. (IE waiting until after the bike ride to tell me about a suggestion rather than making it while in the middle of the ride.) Sure I would agree it is a bit less effective to hear it later but for my husband and I it has solved a lot of frustration out on the road.

Hang in there. I completely feel you and your wife's pain. It is a constant learning process. I will definitely say that this has been a different communication challenge that my Husband and I otherwise have never experienced. However we are learning how to assist and encourage each other in different ways. We have both learned that we have different needs when it comes to training encouragement and advice that we both need to be aware of in order for both of us to be happy and satisfied.

I would definitely suggest a sit down conversation where you and your wife can both share your thoughts and feelings. We tried to have this conversation several times immediately following a workout and it never worked but finally we sat down one evening away from a workout and the conversation was so much better. We answered the following questions to each other and it greatly helped:
1) You can encourage me by doing/saying...
2) I feel frustrated in training when...
3) I need you to support me by ...
4) If you notice an area where you can assist me by giving advice you should do it in the following manner...

They seem simple but it helped us! Hope this helps you! Let me know if you have any questions
