Sunny
Total Time = 4h 04m 16s
Overall Rank = NTDFL/
Age Group = Clyde 40+
Age Group Rank = 9/9
Pre-race routine:

Woke up - the place I stayed was great, literally across the street from transition. Slept like crap (as usual). Got up, ate two Jimmy Dean egg muffins.
Event warmup:

None, shot the crap with fellow BT'ers...
Swim
  • 56m 55s
  • 1640 yards
  • 03m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great layout, the boats were great - had a good time chattin wiht fattyfatfat on the ride out! Current was there moving from left to right across the course. We hopped in and placed our selves to the far left. Unfortunately my form and the current conspired against me - I swear I did a 90 degree turn right at the start and swam right across the whole field... Eventually I got a personal kayak escort all the way in as I kept going all Florida state - WIDE RIGHT... I estimate that I increased the length of the course by somewhere between 25 and 50%. Not a good start
What would you do differently?:

I really have to figure out how to correct my stroke imbalance so that I can swim a straight line for a few dozen strokes... Oh yeah and sighting - must work on sighting
Transition 1
  • 04m 3s
Comments:

It was a long way from swim exit to transition. Wet suit strippers did a great job!
What would you do differently?:

Not be gassed from an hour swim....
Bike
  • 1h 36m 47s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 15.41 mile/hr
Comments:

What to say - I was mentally shot after the swim. The bridge kicked my butt everytime I went over it, dropped gears and tried to spin up it, but my lack of training the last 6 weeks showed!
What would you do differently?:

Hill work - work on sustaining a hard effort, worry about the run when I get to it...
Transition 2
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

It took two minutes to convince myself to keep going :)
Run
  • 1h 23m 22s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 13m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, I knew the "run" would suck. Slow jog out of transition, saw another guy ahead of me (people were a little sparse on the way out by now) caught up to him through a run / walk sequence. After catching up to him, I encouraged him to run just to the next stop sign, which we did. We proceeded to run / walk the rest of the course. Run segments were at 10min mile, but only went a couple a hundred yards at a time. After a couple of miles I could have probably pushed on and dropped the dude, but I just couldn't do that to him - besides 8 minutes was not putting me ont he podium...
What would you do differently?:

Push harder - try to actually run some in training...
Post race
Warm down:

Had a beer, chatted a bit - get out of transition, quick shower and check out of hotel. Get in car and drive back to Dallas - I could barely walk when I had to get out of the car...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The last 6 weeks of sitting on my butt... Mentally I was proud of myself because I didn't quit, even though it was tempting... Physically the course beat me up a little...

Event comments:

Good race, I will do it again with a bit more consistent training though

You are a very generous man of great character.  You were fighting your own battles out there and at the end when things are the most painful you worried more about supporting a fellow racer. Kiss  I am very proud.
