dalessit - 2012-01-02 8:35 PM Suzy, Dave?  What happened to the defense?

Between the interception, the dropped ball and fumble and then the spike, we had a very unfortunate day.  De'Anthony Thomas was just too fast for us cheese eating, beer drinking Badgers.  Very disappointed.   Don't think our coach did us any favors with some of his plays....ah well...on to Michigan State Basketball tonight...courtside seats

Very cool, just make sure you don't go to any of the buffets before the race (I swear that's how I got the flu last year)

Can't wait to see the pictures from the race, you'll have a great time.

If there are any INFINIT Nutrition users out there here is their annual sale...

The Infinit Big Sale is like a race and as we know not everyone wins and some don’t even finish. So...Good luck!

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING RULES!

  • We will be processing all orders the day after the sale. It is necessary in order for our system to keep your order in line it was received. Keep in mind that your order could take up to 8 weeks to deliver so plan accordingly. All orders are produced in the order that they are received, so the earlier you get your order in, the earlier you will receive.
  • If you need your order soon or need it for a race, wait until the day after the sale. Outside of the sale, our normal turnaround of 24-48 hours will still apply.

  • Sale price may not be applied to previous orders or to any orders after the sale is over.
  • Please do not harass Laurie post sale begging for the discount code- she has been trained by the military and will not cave.
  • Nor send her snapshots of your screen to prove you tried to order during the sale. We are not responsible for computer or operator error.
  • It would be nice to be able to call any retail company and say hey – last month you had a big sale but I was busy and missed it…I want the sale price today…we love our customers and that would be great for the consumer if it worked, but the reality is it doesn’t. Or they (and Infinit) would be out of business.
  • To repeat: This is a limited time sale set up to be a ‘race’ so there is no guarantee. Again, Good luck. We hope you are successful but if not there is nothing we can do to help but to encourage you to keep training and try again at the next race.

I have a training issue that I hope some people here might be able to offer some advice on.

I'm planning on doing a HIM in the second part of this year, and am somewhat concerned about the run because I've never run further than 12 K in my life.  There's a half marathon near me in March, and I thought I might give that a go just to see what it's like to run 21 K.  My question(s) is/are in regard to training.

I still want to continue biking (and some swimming) and not focus only on running.  As you can see in my logs, I generally do three running days per week of about 7.5 K (one being a brick), and I was thinking about using the 10% rule every week to slowly get my totals up, but I'm worried that this might lead to injury (I have a history of ITB and iliac crest problems) and won't get me to longer distances before the race.  Should I reduce the running to two days per week so I can more rapidly increase the amount of kilometers and hopefully avoid ITB issues?

So in short, does anyone have any suggestions on how I can train for a half marathon while continuing to swim and bike...and not aggravating my ITB?

Thanks very much for any insights and opinions.

While directly on point, since you have a history of ITB I would incorporate daily ITB stretches into your routine regardless of whether you do the Half Marathon or not.

Happy New Year, everyone!

I closed out 2011 with bronchitis. I've been climbing the walls for the past two weeks, but I suppose it was a good thing to get some rest. Returning to swim class tonight. Pretty excited to actually do something!

I'd recommend doing the opposite: spread your running volume out over more frequent, shorter runs (4-5x per week) and gradually increase the distance across those runs. As you increase the length of your long run, make sure the rest of your weekly mileage is adequate to support it. Some people recommend your long run account for no more than 25% of weekly volume, though I think it can be a bit more than that.

I took a quick look at your logs and it looks like you're running pretty fast on your training runs. I don't know what your race times are, but it's possible you're running too hard on your training runs, which would put you at higher risk for injury.

Home again, home again, jiggety jig... Happy New Year, everyone!!!!

I've always said re-entry is a bitc# but dayum, I am feelin' it today. My body is still on a boat (rocking rocking rocking), Christmas mayhem is all over the house, I'm on load 4 of about 9 of laundry, there is no food here, I drank alcohol daily for 7 days (3 rounds on New Year's Eve, starting at 11:45am -- John, you would have been so proud!! beers on the beach in Cabo!), haven't had a smoothie in 8 days (wah), but...

IT'S ALL GOOD!!!!!

Will slowly work my way through here at some point. Gotta say, I love being unplugged for a week and am going to try to keep that spirit going just a bit. Missed everyone, of course, but loved just being in my moments and enjoying my family and our amazing vacation. Hate that it's over.

Sorry about your Badgers, Suzy. Watched the game on the flight. Yay for the Ducks.

I agree with the daily stretching routine and the suggestion of increasing you low distance volume.  What worked well for me was not increasing my distances every weekend, rather having build/recovery blocks.  Also, when you are trying to stretch your distance....SLOW DOWN!!!!   Either force yourself to take walk breaks or set your pace a minute slower than your normal pace.  Mixing up your training runs works well too.  For example, if you are running 4x a week, have it as a brick, a tempo run, run intensive intervals, and one distance run.  And remember when you are building on your bike and swim ease off a little on the run for that week.  It is all a balance.

Happy 2012 everyone!!!    Is it too early to wish for Valentine's Day?  Not that I need another holiday, but that is when the gym population returns to normal.  Geewiz!!!!

I'm going to try and swim this evening (providing I can get in a lane!)  This should be interesting.   Oh how quickly we fall!!!!  But as Rob always tells me I won't melt so it's time to get back at it.

My personal opinion is if you are planning to do a HIM in July-December, you do not need to rush into a half marathon in March.  You could easily wait until May (for a July event) or later (if Fall event) and give yourself time to build up a decent base before competing.  I also looked at your logs and wondered if you were a) a short distance speed demon or b) doing your training runs too hard.  I don't quite understand the weekly brick run this time of year.  I would rather break that up and run on fresh legs a different day and slowly increase the distance (better for injury prevention).

If you are using a beginnger HIM plan you will also get a build in your running distance.

Lastly, a lot of us have been in the position where we are weaker in one sport.  Sometimes you need to give on something else to get better at the weakness.  You may not want to give up your current biking or swimming level, but you're a triathlete not just a biker or just a swimmer.  I got this advice a while ago and it tooks me some time to embrace it.  In the end, it makes sense.
