Good thoughts to your Aunt, Laura, and rainy thoughts to you Stacey.

As a kid, Smarties and Tootsie Rolls together. Still clearly not a designer chocolate or candy, but could give an interesting rush.

Since I'm not a big fan of chocolate, I don't really care about the M&M/Smarties debate, my fave was always Reeses Pieces!

Hmmmm I don't know that they do get so specific as to list flavors (flavours). Like you I've always wished RDs would do so but don't recall that they did.

I don't recall them going that detailed either. At least in races I've done. Hence being self supported for nutrition as a flavor change can have a substantial impact on how well I could handle something. If you can, try to train yourself to use some variety of it.

I sooooooo didn't want to get out of bed this morning. But I did. I got to the trail and was totally cranky. But I was there. So I ran. As I made my way up through the dark forest the first light came. Finally I was able to turn my headlamp off and run in the faint glow. I broke through the low layer of clouds and fog and suddenly the sky was clear and bright with the sunrise, illuminating Mt. Rainier. I couldn't help but smile. I was completely exhausted from a week of pushing myself (a little too hard IMHO) but knocked 40 seconds off of my last time trial!

Good luck Adrienne x 2 and Ann-Marie.  Wishing you other DL'ers the best.  Since TJ is not on the DL, is that drug induced stupor of a recreational nature?

This has been the longest I've been DL'ed in many years and no end in sight.  I have a consult with a surgeon next week for a major surgery soon.  Hopefully we're talking weeks not months of recovery.  I so badly want to be back on the road.  A huge part of my life is missing.  Thankfully it is allowing more time for other parts of my life but it isn't the same.

edit: you guys move to fast.  root canal is no fun and should be followed up with drug induced stupor.  Hope the pain stays away.

I am reading "Out There: A Story of Ultra Recovery". While reading this morning I read where he quoted something he read online. It made me chuckle and I thought y'all might too. "Any idiot can run a marathon, but it takes a special kind of idiot to run an ultra marathon".

I think we've all had those types of comments aimed at us if we've been doing endurance sports.

Damn. Yeah, that's what I was thinking, then I looked and there's 25 different flavors of Gu. Only 8 are the roctane ones though, so maybe I should stick to them. Or bananas since they're all the same flavor.

I've done 2 50+ mile ultras and 17 marathons now and I actually found the ultra's to be less painful.  The exhaustion is a little deeper with the ultra's but the much higher intensity of marathons resulted in more acute pain in the latter stages.

I carry my own nutrition on the bike and what I want for the first "stop" or two on the run.  Then I go with on course nutrition.  By then, I'll just take what goes down well.

I was talking to a co-worker fellow distance runner in Phoenix the other day and we were talking about how we are growing to enjoy longer and slower.  I'm pretty happy with how my body is adapting with all of this distance stuff. A run over 10 miles used to require mid run nutrition for me and now, so far, I'm good up to 14 without.  I'm not sure if it's the body or the head but I'm definitely adapting.

My friend from the other day is doing Phoenix RnR Marathon soon. His first marathon since THE Boston Marathon.

As for comments, the ones I get are usually good natured. Just yesterday my work partner was making fun of me to her fiancée because I'd been complaining that I was given "only" a 5 mile leg for an upcoming relay.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
