dalessit - 2010-08-10 8:56 PM I would try first the Cobb, if you call them, they'll ask you some questions and figure out which saddle is right for you, and as stated earlier they have a great money back deal.

I need to go look it up but you don't want to tilt the saddle down, I honestly don't remember why but I have read many times that it's bad.   I'll go look it up and figure out why.

aah, here are some reasons.

"Dropping the nose of the seat is common for those that are running too much seat height and leads to tired/aching shoulders and longer term discomfort."

"and tired hip flexors as you are constantly pushing back. Long term ths can lead to back problems as you strengthen one side of your body and not the other"

And just for John here appear to be some sort of official looking studies... ; )

I thought it was because tilting the seat upwards caused the hips to roll back, taking the pressure off of the tender areas and putting more weight on the sit bones of the pelvis...

SSMinnow - 2010-08-10 4:51 PM Ok, the "MG girls" and I have been having a separate email dialogue on some issues I've been having.  While I won't provide the same level of info to the boys, I do have a question on being aero and saddles and remaining pain free....here goes:

When I was riding the Seven mainly like a road bike using my Terry Butterfly all was well.  I'm still riding the Seven, but am now 85/15 aero to upright and I have chafing issues on one side and a saddle sore on the other side in a place you don't have.  Over the course of the last two months I wore two holes in my saddle roughly corresponding to the offended areas.  I replaced it last week with a new Butterfly, but am still having the same problems......so, what say you?  Do I need a different saddle when I ride mainly aero? any thoughts on what might work?  A friend of mine who used to be a bike racer and is now a IM'er suggested the Fizik Airborne.  A little worried about changing so close to my race, but I cannot imagine doing 112m in my current state let alone my 150K race this weekend. OUCH!!!

PS. I've tried wearing a butt load of ASSOS and even carried it with me to reapply, wore bike shorts instead of tri shorts today and nothing works.

what are your fitters and your coach saying?

how have you adjusted the saddle?  up.  down. left . right.??

where on the saddle is it wearing?

one month to the race.  are you considering riding the seven like a road bike when all was well, not looking cool in aero, losing a few minutes on the bike because you're not aero, yet being comfortable for 112 miles then running down those minutes lost on the bike looking really cool because you are running and most others are not.

ha. thanks!

the paper refers to saddle angle relative to seat tube angle (male road cyclists).  not dropping the saddle maintaining seat tube angle.  significant difference from what, it seems, most of you are talking about for suzy.

also, i'm no longer on the cobb band wagon.  not that means much.

one more edit... using spss for anova rocks.  old school!  (hate that term, but it is)

Hi Suzy,

Maybe the nose of the saddle is too wide for your sit bones? As others have suggested, the Cobb might be a good option and has a good refund policy. I ride Specialized saddles, specifically the Phenom (which is actually a mountain bike saddle) for the tri bike, and the Toupe for my road bike. They comes in two widths, and I use the narrower option. I also agree with the others who've mentioned that the saddle tilt might be an issue. I ride (very) slightly nose down, and have found that to be the most comfortable.

Changing around saddles this close to your race is a scary prospect, but with the amount of riding that you do, and the fact that IM riding is all about comfort, I wouldn't be as hesitant to try something new. Talk to your coach. Shoot me an email if you'd like more saddle thoughts (I've tried a bunch...)

Anyone know how to make the cadence sensor work on the bike computer?  It is a new computer but the cadence only worked for a week.  Everything else works fine. Thanks bike gurus!

Make sure the magnet is lined up with the little line on the sensor, try tilting the sensor as close as possible without rubbing.

Those two things usually work for me.

I know it's a bit late for my reply, but adding my two cents in -

I also have Ti Butterfly Saddle. I was very comfortable in it when I first had it.  Over time, I've improved my speed and was able to move my seat a little higher. Because of this, my hips are slightly rotated more as my back is more "downward" compared to more upright when I first started out riding.  Now? It's is a little uncomfortable after a while, and I'm always finding myself to adjust my butt back a little.  Either I have poor ab muscles that's not holding my butt in place, or I need to adjust the tilt.

Anyways - from my understanding is that when you're in a tri bike and very aero, your hips angle changes differently, putting your girly bits will be more in contact with the front part of the saddle.

So - the CHEAPEST method - go to the bike shop with a sitbone measurement and measure your sit bones in a "normal bike position", then get yourself down to aerodynamic and see if it changes.

As for chafing, it sounds like the front part of the saddle is too wide for you.  I don't know any saddles (and I'm sure others will chime in), that has a good wide back with a very narrow nose.

I have never experienced any chafing or saddle sores ever. I don't even use lube.   I do have "comfort" issues, but not to the point where I'm seriously having problems.

As for others - I would try to change the saddle as soon as possible.  Do you have any old saddle that you know you're comfortable in, but just slightly off? Maybe use that instead.

Good luck!

x2 on not using lube or having issues. The ONLY time I had issues was when trying a new saddle that didn't work out!! It's a bit too wide and caused me to be horribly uncomfortable and chafed -- but only on longer rides (3+ hours) and not until longer into the ride (2-ish hours?). I once read (dunno where, not peer-reviewed either!) that if you have the right saddle you shouldn't have problems with sores.

As I mentioned before, I do all long rides in tri shorts. I rode STP (2 days, 204 miles) in tri shorts. So, with the right saddle I'm lube-free and minimal padding and all is well in my world.

GOOD LUCK and keep us posted!!!

********WARNING********
A REAL TRI QUESTION

I have a Garmin 305, as does my running partner, and when we run I am consistantely .01 miles PER MILE ahead of her.  While this is not a big deal for a few miles it does add up.  I have checked it against my bike computer and another Garmin and they all are dead on and mine is ahead.....

Question:  WTF?

Things I have checked:

1)     I have not seen a "calibration" setting (although I am a Class-A Techno Idiot
2)     The unit has not been damaged and this has been ongoing since last year...I'm also slow to take care of things.  ;-)
3)      I don't drink any more so I know I am not staggering .01 more per mile than she is.
4)     The only thing I can think of is that I am 6'4" and she is 5'3" so I must be closer to the satelite.   ;-)

If there is anything I can do about this I would appreciate any imput...and talk to me like I am 8, 5, 3 when it comes to geek stuff please.

Thanks MG

Steve, what do you mean by .01 miles per mile?   No mathematician here, but I am sitting here confused.

never mind...

so after a 10 mile run, your watch would say 10.1 miles and hers would say 10.0?

sorry i have nothing that will help you, i was just confused and will wait until someone replies.

When she gets to 1.00 miles on her watch, my Garmin reads 1.01 and we have been running right together...the other day we did about 6 miles and when we do a run/walk 4/1 by the time we were about 4 miles into the run we were 40-50 yards off on when each said it was time to walk.  No big deal except we are planning to do a marathon together and while we could just work off one watch i would like to try to get mine right with the all the others.

First, look on the Garmin Menu - Settings to General to About Forerunner.  You will see SW Version (mine is 3.90) and GPS 3.00.

Have you ever connected to the software update website at garmin.com?

glens suggestion is a good one.

53 feet per mile.  even running right next to someone, i'd think this is is a very acceptable deviation.

looking at your logs, your runs are on the hootch.  if i remember right, reception is going to be spotty in places there.  actually, for most of the run accept on the backside through the field.  again 53 feet is pretty good.

how are you comparing the bike computer and 305?  if you're riding and running then don't count on them being the same.

for sh+ts try this....next time you run with your partner, wear both of them on the time wrist and see whatcha get.   but man, 53 feet!  in a few weeks we're gonna be throwing our empties father than that!!!

and sorry to split hairs here, that whole geograPHY thing right, ha!,  but your distance is not ahead of her. its more than her.   so like when you we to take a leak over there stop saying you went ahead of her!  HA!

hope all went well at emory and for your friend!!!!

Anyone know how to make the cadence sensor work on the bike computer?  It is a new computer but the cadence only worked for a week.  Everything else works fine. Thanks bike gurus!

Linda

Make sure the magnet is lined up with the little line on the sensor, try tilting the sensor as close as possible without rubbing.

Those two things usually work for me.

Tony, the sensor is on a tube that is an inch away from the pedal with the magnet.  Definitely no rubbing, but I am not sure how to get them closer since they don't move away from the metal tubes that they are bound to. Any ideas?

Is the sensor zip-tied to your bike?  Can you rotate it around a bit to get it closer to the crank magnet?  Which computer do you have?

It is zip-tied.  It is rotated and lined up with the crank magnet but still 3/4inch apart.  It is a Cateye Strada Cadence.

It is a Cateye Strada Cadence.

hmm, that seems pretty far away, that is the same one Sam has on her bike, pretty popular model.  I'll look at hers when I get home and see how far it is away.  I usualy try to get the sensor and magnets almost touching.

Linda - I have a cateye and last race I only got cadence...no distance or speed info.
Mine is secured with zip ties so after I got home I played with the magnets for a little
while and it is working fine now.  I think mine just got a little out of line ... also moved
the unit closer to the censor.

Of course, everything died on my bike computer at mile 10 during my race on Sunday and I haven't been able to get it working again.  I had moved it, taken it off/on and nothing seems to work.  So Tony does need to take a look.  ;-)
