OK, weird question...  My running shoes picked up a funk last weekend at my race.  It is so bad that they have been relegated to being left outside because they make the whole house smell (and it ain't like sniffing roses...)  Is it okay to run Brooks through the washing machine (especially one of the front loader-high efficiency ones) or will it destroy the shoe?

Have you tried replacing the insoles first? It is not a good idea to wash them in the machine, it denatures the materials the shoe is made from.

Are we talking the outsides of the shoes?  When that happens to me, I fill up our laundry tub with soap and water, scrub the heck out of them with a brush, rinse them, them them drain and then fill them with newspaper to dry.  Works for me!

You can wash them in that washer on the most gentle cycle with a FULL load of towels to prevent the hard bouncing around....For YEARS I have found the best way to dry my shoes or even the kids shoes and cleats is to lay them on their side with the tongue pulled back in front of the bottom of the refridgerator.  The gentle warm air from there drys them in a couple of hours and...at least for me...works better than newspaper but isn't so hot to destroy the shoe.

gdale - 2010-08-11 12:12 PM Isn't today Wednesday????  Where is Suzy's question?  She better be out on a century to leave us hanging like that!

Uhm, excuse me, but JOHN was going to post the question for me since I live in timbuktu part of the time, my satellite internet was down and I was heading out to run in tornadic conditions.  I guess you can't rely on all men or at least one man in this forum to do a woman's job.....so

WHO THE HECK IS RACING THIS WEEKEND??? And why have you waited all day to tell us about it????  Details people.

and for the rest of the MG creatures out there, how many of you have already detailed next year's race schedule? if you haven't given it a thought...when will you????

No races scheduled until Vegas half marathon!  I may have to find one more tri to do this year just because.

Next year is going to be the Boston marathon!  I will gladly carry the torch if Suzy doesn't make it.  I'm trying to decide between the Auburn Sprint 1000m/18mi/7k run ( I did the oly in 2008, but now it's a longish sprint) or Wildflower Olympic (both are in May, and both are crazy challenging).  Then in July, Vineman 70.3 again, I just cannot get enough.  And then contrary to everything I have posted this year about IM, I am hoping to register for IMWI by sitting next to the fastest computer in our house on 9/13 at 12 CST!  Call me crazy.  I just got nervous typing that!

You go girl!  I'd pee in my pants typing that!

********WARNING********
A REAL TRI QUESTION

I have a Garmin 305, as does my running partner, and when we run I am consistantely .01 miles PER MILE ahead of her.  While this is not a big deal for a few miles it does add up.  I have checked it against my bike computer and another Garmin and they all are dead on and mine is ahead.....

Question:  WTF?

Things I have checked:

1)     I have not seen a "calibration" setting (although I am a Class-A Techno Idiot
2)     The unit has not been damaged and this has been ongoing since last year...I'm also slow to take care of things.  ;-)
3)      I don't drink any more so I know I am not staggering .01 more per mile than she is.
4)     The only thing I can think of is that I am 6'4" and she is 5'3" so I must be closer to the satelite.   ;-)

If there is anything I can do about this I would appreciate any imput...and talk to me like I am 8, 5, 3 when it comes to geek stuff please.

Thanks MG

glens suggestion is a good one.

53 feet per mile.  even running right next to someone, i'd think this is is a very acceptable deviation.

looking at your logs, your runs are on the hootch.  if i remember right, reception is going to be spotty in places there.  actually, for most of the run accept on the backside through the field.  again 53 feet is pretty good.

how are you comparing the bike computer and 305?  if you're riding and running then don't count on them being the same.

for sh+ts try this....next time you run with your partner, wear both of them on the time wrist and see whatcha get.   but man, 53 feet!  in a few weeks we're gonna be throwing our empties father than that!!!

and sorry to split hairs here, that whole geograPHY thing right, ha!,  but your distance is not ahead of her. its more than her.   so like when you we to take a leak over there stop saying you went ahead of her!  HA!

hope all went well at emory and for your friend!!!!

Jumping in late here... but when I run with friends we often find our distances are off .2+ (that's tenths, not one-hundredths!!) for a 7-mile-ish run. We decide that we end up running tangents differently, or one ran on inside corners and one on outside, or whatever. Like John's idea of wearing both on one wrist -- that will give you  your true data points!

AND!!! Should you ever wear your Garmin in a race, remember that races are measured by the tightest tangents and that it is next to impossible to run a true course. Forgedaboutit if you veer off for water!! My Portland marathon last year ended up being 26.5 or something on my Garmin, in spite of my efforts to run all tangents tightly. At the time, it was the worst of mental mind-#$(#$... Now I know better and won't let it hang me up.

I concur - I just read in a Runner's World mag that marathon courses are measured to the tightest, legal course possible.  So you can never run a legal course under 26.2 miles.

Hi everyone.  Looks like I missed out on a good discussion day yesterday.  I spent a lot of time at the vet with my 16 year old cat.  Luckily I was able to bring her home but I think we have finally arrived at the borrowed time countdown.  Hopefully the meds will make her more comfortable.  Needless to say I was an emotional wreck and didn't make it back into work.  Kind of silly to get that worked up over a cat but like I said we've had her for 16 years!!

2011.....hhhmmmmm what could I do?   I hear there is kind of a cool party in Canada in the late summer.  Might check that out.   Otherwise it will be training races for IMCA.  February will have a half marathon on my local training path,  then an aptly named Blood, Sweat and Gears 100 mile bike ride through the Appalachian Mountains, followed by a 2 mile open water race in July.  Oh and I would like to do a HIM in late June/early July if any one knows of one fairly close to me.  Plus my hubby will be tackling the SAVAGEMAN HIM next September.  He is determined to climb the Westernport Wall and get his brick.  I will gladly spectate on that one!

{{{{{{{{{{{{{[big HUG]}}}}}}}}}}}}}
I know *exactly* how you feel.  I have 5 animals and one cat, Keno, has FeLV and she's on borrowed time as well. I haven't had her for 16 years...just about under a year.  She has been getting her "feel good" meds (B12 and B vits), and EPO (yeah., those blood doping meds).  It hasn't been working as nothing cures FeLV, but we wanted to at least try to her her PCVs up. I'm in the same shoes as you are.
Spoil your cat all you can, take it outside for while, etc.   I think a really nice memento is to get her paw print in clay. Just need to get sculpy clay, mold it up a bit, and then kind of put her pawprint on it.  Or Plaster pawprint kits that's available at craft shops.   I do this for every animal that has passed on when I worked as a vet tech and it really gave the owner some personal closure after it has been baked.

So far, I have two of my own, and when I look at it, I think of them, and hug my animals a little tighter that day.

Tracy- so sorry to hear about your cat.  She sure has had a good 16 years to be loved by you and your family!  It's not silly at all to get all emotional, as she is one of your family members.  DJ's pawprint idea is wonderful.  Thanks for the idea, DJ!

Take care...hugs!

starting with the private training now. I lead the group workout last night for the tri club also. we only did a short ride of 20K but in the middle of it I threw in 8K of 2K sprints. Followed up with a good 4k run with a few hills included. Everyone worked up a good sweat and everyone looked like they had a good workout.

Feeling very tired today. Didn't even get out of bed until after 11:00 am and that is highly unusual for me. Normally I can "sleep in" until around 7:00AM. I have been fighting a bad cough/congestion over the past couple of weeks but didn't feel too bad other than the cough. Now I am all stuffed up and weak as a kitten still with the bad cough. Bring up lots of lung butter.  Guess I'll put off my run until tomorrow.

Tracy sorry to hear about your cat. I have had pets all my life and understand the loss of one you have had for so long.

Tracy, so sorry to hear about your cat.  FWIW our 18+ year old rag doll cat has been on and off of "the watch" for about 8 months now and right now has rebounded really decently, although all he does is eat, sleep, and go the bathroom.  So maybe yours will surprise you.  My bride just keep thinking he has nine lives and he is on #9.

I am considering staying in a hotel for a few days after the "day" finally comes instead of dealing with the wife and 2 daughters when the inevitable happens.  So don't feel like the lone ranger about being an emotional wreck!

Hi guys,

For those of you who have done masters swimming, did you need to know how to do breaststroke and butterfly?  Coach wants me to do masters swimming in the fall to get used to swimming with other people same speed or faster and push myself.  I will talk to the masters swim coach at the college pool I swim at to see what is expected, but just wondering what your experience has been.  I will be in the slooooooooow lane.
