Steve, Avery is perfect!! And your photography is awesome. Keep those pics comin'!! Yes.. I hate you.... ; ) I miss vacations that don't involve races. |

Jump up and down people and give us your story! For us non racers, when does your season officially end? do you plan to take time off? ramp right back up for Fall running season? or sit on a couch and watch Football? I have a 5 mile trail race in the morning and the cool thing is my daughter is going to do it too. It will be her first race after the Thanksgiving 5k. Linda |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Trevor- does she have any running background? I always suggest starting beginners out with run/walks. 1) It helps prevent injuries. 2.) It helps them mentally stick with it. They even have a plan that you can follow for time goals. http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/marathon.html
TrevorC - 2010-08-19 9:57 PM looking for a good entry level marathon plan for Michelle. Hal higdon's just shows run X miles. No speed training or any mixing up of pace. Any suggestions? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, I'm off work today to have a birthday party for Exh B. We invited the whole football team. I thought having from 11-2 would keep it small but I don't think so now. They are all looking forward to swinging into the River. Should be great! On another note, I've cleaned out my closets and have decided to sell a bunch of stuff. From Brand New Newtons, to Tri Clothes to my short john wetsuit and my bike trainer that my bike has been on once. It's a steal! Check it out!!! http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumid=14893

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was going to ask the same thing...if Michelle has not been running more than a few miles per week, I would NOT recommend speedwork for the first marathon. Rather, I would focus on building the engine safely. While I was not smart enough to use any plan for my first marathon in '03, several friends used Higdon's beginning plan quite successfully. tri-chic - 2010-08-20 7:23 AM Trevor- does she have any running background? Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() She has a bit of running strength. She really has only been running ~~20k/ week. So she is getting her feet wet i guess. I thought that maybe she needed to do a bit of intervals/hills,etc during the build. So its pretty much about just building a base through mileage then?? |

Jump up and down people and give us your story! For us non racers, when does your season officially end? do you plan to take time off? ramp right back up for Fall running season? or sit on a couch and watch Football? I'm "racing" this weekend. Just a little sprint, but with some serious hills. Even more exciting...my husband is doing it too - his first tri. I think he is nervous, but playing it cool. And to top it off after we finish we'll head to Doug's house for the after race party ![]() Sprint for me on Sunday... have been under the weather all week so hopes for super speed are slim... As far as the the other question - season finale is US Open Oly in mid October... (I might have to do the Halloween Sprint here in town though). I have to dial into running for Las Vegas HM and then will probably take it easy through the holidays before getting ramped up again for the St Paddy's Day Tri... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went for a ride last night with my usual training group but the other woman bailed. Therefore it was me and 2 of the strong guys. Needless to say my ego jumped all over my face! I was attacking up hills and actually passing on the flats (gotta love a well fitted tri-bike). Well, to be honest it was about to rain and I was NOT going to be the reason we got stuck in the rain! Man am I paying for that stupidity today! I am waddling around like I'm 9 months pregnant!!! Oh it hurts so good. |

While it is short, a lot of first timers are going to be surprised as it is a hilly 10 mile bike course and a hilly 5K run. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just checking in. Had a GREAT ride last night. The LBS has a ride every Th. night at 6:15, and does about 20-22 miles. Last night there must have been about 30 or 35 of us altogether, both men and women, including a woman who trains with my trainer. Group naturally split by pace, with a pack splitting off to do some additional hill work. (I have a frame that was not built for hill climbing -- and I do not mean my bike -- but I joined the group up the hills nonetheless.) Then a nice paceline coming back. They were really moving and I was happy to just hang on. Really enjoyed the ride, and am still smiling about it. I need to get out on that ride more often. For those in the DC area, it leaves from Conte's in Bethesda, snakes its way to MacArthur and then out MacArthur to Potomac and back. Very good group, well organized with cue sheets and well run. Plus afterward Conte's provides the liquid refreshments that John loves. |

They do free food and similar refreshments on the first Tuesday of the month ride. Actually causing some problems here because there are too many people, they are trying to split them all up into 4-5 groups now. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Folks. No racing for me this weekend. Tri's are done for this year. I hope to have some running races in the schedule before the end of the year. Just need to see what fits. For the off season, I plan to focus on the bike and on swimming form (vs. volume). Hope to get some technique suggestions from a swimmer friend and then just drill and build muscle memory. Turns out my tonsil infection from a couple of weeks ago has come back. Not nearly as bad as it was but the fact that it came back 3 days after completing the antibiotics is annoying. Back on meds again and going to see an ENT doc next week. Will really stink to need to get my tonsils out now after not having issues for 37 years!! So instead of pushing through it, I will probably not do much in the way of training in the next week...just take the meds and let the body rest and hopefully kick this thing. My kids leave today for 2 weeks with thier grandparents. 1 week with my in-laws in PA and one week with my parents on Long Island. Kristine and I are headed up to our cabin tonight for some R&R for the weekend and then we will get the chance to actually go out to eat next week (that just isn't that fun with the 3 kids!)! The first week will be great - by the second week I am sure we will be missing the kids big time!! Good luck to all the racers out there this weekend (both the MG peeps and your kids and spouses!). |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have to say that it weird for me that so many in the MG are done with your tri-seasons. Besides Sunday's sprint, I still have the Nation's Tri on 9/12 in DC, and Augusta 9/26. Depending on how that goes I might add a half in Washington, NC on 10/30. |

In my area, there are a few more in September but they won't work with my life schedule. After that, most would require a weekend trip somewhere which starts to conflict with kids fall sports so they aren't really an option. Would love to extend my season but family first. Plus, the real reason I am in this is to get me to do all the work for those few races!! |

Part of me is sad that my last tri for the year with be on 9/12, but I love the Fall running season and really hope to get back some of the speed I lost last year. It's all about focus and priorities! And I am guessing at least a couple people had their first tris, even HIMS in March and April so it's been a long season for some, including me. |
