For those who have done an IM (especially LP) before (or anyone else who has thoughts!):

What are your thoughts on going up a weekend before to train there? I have an opportunity to do it over Memorial Day weekend. It's about a 10 hour drive for me and would definitely be a stretch to budget for the race itself and a training weekend. Helpful? Possible to do it without seeing the course in advance of arriving there? Other thoughts?

Thanks!

Ryan

hey Ryan-

training at LP is certainly helpful, but not necessary at all.

I'm only 3.5 hours away, so it was very doable for me to go up.

Things that helped:

I learned the bike course was more about managing your spikes on the hills then it was the hills themselves.  they are not challanging climbs by any means, provided you have the right gear.  It was helpful to feel what the right effort was.

also, running up the hill back into town painted a good picture of what to expect.

The swim is no big deal.....you cannot duplicate what you would want to learn anyway...the mass start.

So, do not stress out getting up there.  if you can, just try and do a few of your long rides that have some good hills.

training on the actual course is great, but IMO not worth it if you have to stress over setting it up.....

Kaburns, good job on the bike kind of goes without saying.  Matter of fact, those numbers are downright intimidating!

I had an okay month.  Followed my plan.  It sure felt like I swam a lot more than 7 hours though....   Need to get the Bike number up for Feb...

January's totals:

Bike:12h 46m 47s  - 236.76 Mi
Run:11h 48m 29s  - 88.87 Mi

Cusetri - Thanks for the info. That makes sense and it's good to know.

The trip is going to be very easy and inexpensive it turns out so I'm in for Memorial Day weekend in Placid! Very excited! Anyone else going to be there?

kaburns1214 and DreamChaser - Great work on your January numbers!!! I'm tracking mine in a spreadsheet:

Swim: 24800 Yd
Bike: 290 Mi
Run: 87.5 Mi
Strength: 6 Hr

Keep up the great work everyone!

Okay month for me..found the rhythm of my training again; set swim PB I had set back in 2006; making some big gains in swim gains doing the Finding Freestyle program; have a plan to get healthy...knee/quad is improving but long road to go ahead; PT says I basically cycle with one leg and run like I'm on ice all the time which explains why my pace is what it is

January's totals:
Bike:18h 04m 20s  - 299.38 Mi
Run:7h 52m 05s  - 37.53 Mi
Swim:12h 51m 31s  - 25400 Yd
Physical Therapy:18h 12m
Yoga:1h 28m

This was a good start to the year for me. Never have I ever ran or swam this much in a month:

Swim: 35,300 yards / ~12 hours
Bike: 337.2 miles / ~20 hours (all on the trainer.....{face palm})
Run: 116.59 miles / ~17.25 hours

kaburns - dang! how long were you riding the trainer for on a daily basis!!! Were all of those miles on the trainer? Nice job!

Hi everyone

I've been lurking here for a while.  I'm signed up for IMLP this summer... it is my first IronMan.  I was wondering if anyone knew if they send out information for participants (race packet).  I guess I just have tons of logistical questions, (ie. special needs bags, aid stations, bike check, spectator info, etc) that I am hoping to have answered.  When I did the NYC Marathon a couple of years ago, they sent out a book/guide for participants that covered everything.  Does the Iron Man do the same thing?

Thanks

Pretty happy with how the 1st month of following my plan went.  And I lost about 5 pounds in the process - I'm lighter now than I was when I was in 11th grade (I'm 35 now... teaching 11th grade).

Bike:

12h 40m 52s  - 242.08 Mi
Run:13h 59m 03s  - 89.06 Mi

There will be a athlete's guide posted on the website eventually. But read through this thread, including some links they posted to sites that have their own version of what to expect. And ask the people on this thread if there are things unanswered.

The link I posted a couple of pages ago has the athletes guide from last year so you can get a feel for how things work. Know that 2011 may have some changed compared to 2010 and our athlete guide might be posted 1-2 weeks before our race.

Swimming always feels long to me -- its all that tiem to get to the pool, change, get out of the pool, go off, the non-training time associated with swimming is almost more than the actual swim time.

I cut a few trainer rides short only so many hours can be spent in front of the TV.  I want 40 hours to feel "light" so that when it goes to 60 and 70 hours in May and June I'm not toally intimidated -- then again those hours will (hopefully) be spent outside if it ever stops snowing.

6-8 inches of snow here in Vermont, a bit more to follow. Off to the treadmill today!

I think we ended up with around 13 inches of snow, which all came in around 7 hours.

What training plan has one doing 20 hours 6 months prior to IM? I am on the Iron Fit plan, but looking at these totals I feel like I have not even started a plan. Im no expert, but that's a lot of time this far out. Is everyone else doing this too.
