Hi Kids!!!

When I am in Minocqua and not on the MG, it means one of two things, 1) either it is storming cats and dogs so the satellite internet is hosed up or 2) it is totally beautiful and we're out on the boat.  Today it is #1 that keeps me from the group. Got stuck doing my last TT before IM on the CT and then a swim in the turmoil. No worse for the wear and NO I'm not obessing about next year's IM or even this ones...the beauty of being in the hinterlands where no other IM's exist.

Twin--really sad, but I also lost my G-ma when she was 95 yo.  I was so lucky to have her for that long.  She was my rock and taught me a lot.

Kyla--hope the rest of the fam stays healthy while you battle the bug. Can't believe what a petrie dish schools seems to be.

Doug--think you made the right call.  Standing around for 2 hours to be on the course with people who clearly are far less trained can be dangerous.  They have a right to be there, the RD sounds a little dense to me.   While I haven't thought a ton about the OS, I did sign up for Master's swimming so that clearly is on my radar as something that needs to be improved upon.  The rest? Who knows...like to get my running shored up, but I'd I would also like to be a stronger biker!!

Stan--have a blast on your trip.  Swim if safe, laugh a lot and enjoy your friends.

George--enjoy the family reunion....one man's chaos (mine) is another mans' joy!

To the rest, enjoy Thursday night...the weekend is almost upon us!

Have had a tough week as Kathy's grandma has been in comfort care (hospice) for the past week with kidney failure and passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by family at the wonderful age of 93.  Rest in peace, Grandma Dorothy.

Hug your loved ones!!!

My condolences. While death is never easy, that sounds like one of the better ways to go "peacefully... surrounded by family at the wonderful age of 93."

x2 Kim.  Glad for being surrounded by family and peaceful....and especially glad for the 93 years.

Similar goals to mine DR.  I want to loose a few pounds...about 10-15 and do Disney marathon in Jan.  After that it is get on the trainer and back in the pool and re-train myself with those two sports after being away from them since Augusta 2009......seriously....I have not been on a bike nor in a pool since  9-27-2009.  My workout partner will be back from an assignment in Houston by then so motivation will NOT be a problem.

i just realized something reading your post.  this is the first place we've lived in a long time that isn't really in trouble from hurricanes.  we lived through several including katrina, rita and ike.  jarrett also made it through hugo.  interesting.  and i can't believe katrina was five years ago yesterday.  doesn't seem like it.

of course i guess we are susceptible to tropical storms here and for various reasons a slow moving tropical storm is just as dangerous or in some cases more dangerous (and damaging) than many hurricanes.

be safe everyone!

Thanks for the hugs and supportive thoughts, you guys are the best.

John, you are a crack up.  Happy 4 day weekend to you.

Doug, my off-season has been really nice.  I'm now doing about 8-9 hours a week but it is shorter stuff, which is nice.  I will be starting my masters swimming probably next Tuesday, the coach had me do a little tryout and accepted my lousy breaststroke (flutter kick with breast stroke arms), my awkward backstroke and my slow freestyle and has told me to show up for practice asap and a minimum of 3x/week.  Which will be good for me.

With running, I am supposed to run at least 4-5x week to build up my run durability so that once we start marathon training, I don't get injured.  Biking is only 2x/week, nothing long, some technique stuff added in.  And I'm doing a bit of strength training as I can fit it in.

Everyone be safe out there this weekend.

Someone asking why so many were vomiting during the race, most blame it on the heat which would make some sense but seems like a lot had that problem.  Quite a few blaming it on the Power Bar Perform, having to drink it for the same reason as Chris, they ran out of water.

Ironman Louisville Many People Sick? Can't Post

Has there been any news about why so many people got sick this year. It has been hot in the past without these issues. Was it the river water, new Ironman Sports drink, water on course or lack of water on course, etc?

I was moderately sick to my stomach from the last quarter or so of the bike through the first half of the run. I attributed my problems to dehydration and the heat. I slowly got better through the run as I was taking in water and Perform.

I know of several people that were seriously ill enough to require hospital admission for hyponatremia (14-16ppl range). At least two people wound up on mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit.

Was fine for the first half of bike, but definitely started feeling sick at T2 and got sick with six miles to go on the run. I will hold-off getting sick for as long as possible, so I held onto the thought that the nausea will pass. In my case, I believe I got sick due to dehydration, but the PowerBar Perform didn't help. During the bike, I drank nothing but Perform and my stomach started feeling sour toward the end of the bike. I witnessed several getting sick during the run and couldn't help but think they were also dehydrated from the extreme heat and/or they drank the Perform.

I got sick out there at the end of the run. Had fluids coming out of both ends. Went to medical post race to get an IV. Was so dehydrated the nurse blew the first two veins and had to use an infant size needle to get the drip going.

Now, three days later, I've had a terrible sinus infection. One of the worst I can remember. Hit me about 48 hours after the race.

Not sure of the root cause. But I can say I've been very sick.

You just did a frackin Ironman in 10,000 degree heat and just about fried your immune system in the process. Then some people go around blaming a sports drink for an illness. Are people that stupid?

Didn't they send all LOU participants a free case of Perform so they could try it out before the race?

It's an extreme, extraordinarily long endurance event, undertaken in ridiculously challenging conditions of high heat and humidity.

You missed the part where I've been training in Houston all summer where it is hotter and more humid. The fact that I've done several 8 hour + training sessions in similar conditions with less nutrition and never had the same problems as I had on race day.

I think you're probably right, unfortunately, however it's hard to believe since I've never had any symptoms prior to race day. I'd like to think it was the Ohio River that did me in. That's just me trying to find something other than myself to blame though.

I am not implying that the sports drink caused an illness. An illness is implied to be a sore throat, aches, fever, etc. The sports drink made me vomit. There's a difference there. The only reason I drank it was because the course was out of water!

Also, I trained in SE LA in worse heat and humidity, so I was prepared.

Finally, no, I am not that stupid!

Yes, we received a case of Perform about 3 months prior to the race. I took one sip and gave the rest away. The only reason I drank it on the bike was I had no choice as the aid stops ran out of water otherwise I would have sticked to my original nutrition plan.

Thanks for the further back-ground.

Well, there was another IM branded event running on the same day with a swim in crystal clear and clean water, a challenging and very scenic bike ride and a similar run. I heard that they had an over-abundance of water and sports drink on the course. This is a race that has been going on for 27 years and is known for having extraordinary athlete on-course help and support on race day. Race conditions can get warm, but this year it was pretty close to ideal. The good news going forward is that in the IM world . . . . there are now choices!

Sounds like you were doing better than all the hyperthermic people at IMLou!

It was interetsng looking at the time at IMC this year. yes there was that one challenging bit on the bike course form Yellow lake back to part way down Hwy 97, but other than that it was pretty darn good other than that 15K stretch of road. It was a pretty "fast" day and I know lots of people that set some good PR's. In the upper ends of the deep AG's it was fast and competitive.

Not sure if you've heard... Some of the more popular races tend to sell out very quickly, and are, therefore, not really a choice.

I started heaving and DNF'd around mile 75 on the bike. I now have a cold. My heart rate was jacked by 20 BPM ever since I got out of the water. I've trained in the heat all summer long and rode the course four times this year... on comparably hot days. I even paced slower than my training rides to leave something in the bank for the marathon. In my case, I'm writing it off to a bug. I had plenty of long days preparing in the heat.

I'm curious if anyone else who got sick had an elevated HR early on in their ride (beyond the first few miles)?

Hi gagn. Just a quick hello. I've been exceptionally busy this past two weeks with house painting and getting the PT business. I was supposed to be racing this weekend but have pulled something in my back. Chiropractor says the L5 disc in my back is inflamed and that is what is making it hard to stand up right. Hopefully it will clear up enough for me to do my final race of the season. Haven't had time to catch up on all the posts but I hope everyone that wanted to got there registration for the Cdn IM next year. Congrats Chris I did see you had a tough race. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend and I hope that hurricane Earl isn't too hard on our NC peeps.

So I always over-use my adjectives, should have left it at a few instead of quite.  As far as people vomiting, lots of races happen but first time I have seen a specific post on it.

Also, if you think about it, having to drink anything with calories vs. water could cause you to throw up if you went over your planned calories.

I think is the normal cause of stomach issues in an IM isn't it.  (too many calories).

all in all, pretty pi$$ poor to run out of water, that's something they do in local sprints not a race you pay nearly 600 bucks to do.

where do you see quite a few?

So I always over-use my adjectives, should have left it at a few instead of quite.  As far as people vomiting, lots of races happen but first time I have seen a specific post on it.

Also, if you think about it, having to drink anything with calories vs. water could cause you to throw up if you went over your planned calories.

I think is the normal cause of stomach issues in an IM isn't it.  (too many calories).

all in all, pretty pi$$ poor to run out of water, that's something they do in local sprints not a race you pay nearly 600 bucks to do.

just being an a$$,  sorry.  :-)    seriously, i'm still amazed they ran out of it.  unreal!!!!!

It's ok, I know you like scientific facts and I like rumor-mongering, that's why I think a lot of posts are interesting.  Maybe not always true, but interesting none-the-less.

No idea whether this pertains to IM LOU or not, but last year there were many more people that were complaining of throwing up than past years.  While it was hot and that can cause digestion issues, many blamed it on the water quality of Lake Monona.  It was a very  hot summer and we battled bacteria levels in the lake right up to race day.  By some "Miracle" they were fine on race day.  If you swallow water swimming (and I do), it's easy to see how you could pick up some bad bugs that affect you later on, from both ends.

Not sure if there is science behind it, but one of the reasons I am OWSing so much is to get my body used to all the "crap" in the water.  Crazy, I know, but hopefully it will serve me well on race day.

Signed, The girl who drinks at least a quarter cup of the lake each times she swims!

Minnow, you do realize that the water in Minocqua is way to clean compared to the water in Lake Monona to assist in picking up the "Crap" immunity!  Laughing

Hope you are successfully relaxing and Paul is treating you like royalty!

Just wanted to say I love my wife...

Asked her what color road ID I should get, she said blue, it would match my bike.

Also she timed herself changing a flat last night.

Awesome : )

Kim - Sorry to hear about Grandma Dorothy but I hope and pray I can go like that when the time comes.

Doug - good move!  Have fun and race hard.

Kyla - sorry about the kiddo.  We are about to open the petri dish of germs in a 4 days.  Does it ever get better?  I hadn't had the flu in 20 years then my son went to preschool.  Tony and I got hit so bad w/ a flu bug that we had to call the grandparents to care for the kids b/c we could not stand up.

Good luck to all the other racers this weekend.  I signed both of my kids up for a race next weekend.  Tony will have to handle race duty since I will be a few hundred miles away.

And this offseason I am learning to swim or finding another sport.  I've gotten slower in the pool as the summer has gone on.  So my goal is to not "to swim" for 5-6 months and just work on drills and technique.  There is no use in me practicing a crappy stroke.  So it will be drill, drill, drill.

Hey Tracy--can you tell us exactly who is in the group photo???  Of course I recognize you, Kyla and the hot guy on the right, but who are the rest of the peeps?  and what is up with the size of the IM Canada lake? it looks tiny, a lot like Lake Placid.  Is that a good or bad thing with 2500+ people in it?

Hey Dineen--I am an equal opportunity swallower...been in Monona at least 6 times and make sure to ingest an additional 1/4 cup each time just to be fully prepared.

Today's last longer run (I feel like I have said that for a while) went pretty well.  I've totally confirmed I would rather run in 50F, rain and wind than 80F+ with high humidity....can't say the same for the bike though!
