Regular 124 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Doug... Hello. I would be insulted if anyone on this chain was insulted by you taking part. Ironman (IMO) is about your personal goal. Some people "race", some people aim to qualify for Kona, some people have a target completion time (sub 12hrs, sub 15 hrs, sub 17hrs). At the end of the day, it is it a great event and you will feel a million dollars when you cross the line at the end.... And you picked a great one to do. I`m pulling for you.... Now stop running 3 marathons in 3 weeks and get on your bike :-) Chris |

Veteran 176 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Doug, Sounds like your ready to take on the challenge of IM. I'm making my second attempt and it is quite an undertaking. You got alot more running under your belt than I do and that has to help your confidence. I'm no expert on the bike but I have found that the bike fit and comfort are the most important. Particularly the seat. When I started to get over 60 miles on my rides I had some man issues down there that needed to be addressed by a good seat. As for the bike, Tri vs road bike is all about comfort for me. Being able to put some wieght on my elbo keeps some weight off the seat helps me. Combined with the aero saving it's a no brainer for me. Either way having a proper fit by a good fitter is critical.Hilly course with alot of sharp turns and stop and go might make sense for a road bike, but from what I hear that is not the case at LP. Wheels are nice, but they don't change comfort much. Sidewinds with deep wheels can be a handling chanenge too. They look cool, and I have them because they came with a power meter in a set that I got a great deal on. You can rent them for a practice race and see if you like them. Hope you training goes well and we can toe up to the line and give it a shot in July.

I head she is also taking guitar lessons, trying to go back to school, learning to ski, planning a trip to cancun, planning a trip to go back to vail, and somewhere in there is still managing to not miss a single game of go fish or making cupcakes or practicing spelling.... life is good.
LOL!! Ha, ha, ha.....too funny!! I can't tell you how many dang times, I might as well just give it up. Oh well, just had to comment on that one Edited by marathongirl11 2012-01-26 1:51 PM |

Regular 847 Akron | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I thought I would share a Friday funny. I was at the sport massotherapist last night getting some work on my IT band..... It was that uncomfortable moment when the therapist asked me if I had a hand held vibrator...akward silence.... "It really helps loosen the muscles in your thigh and calf." hahaha. I bet! I wander if I can get one with the IM brand name? Will this help me with my bike splits? Will this make me run faster? hahahaha |

There is a rumor going around that Zipp is about to come out with a dimpled version which preliminary wind tunnel testing shows it to save 20 seconds over 40k. It is being developed in partnership with Garmin, and features an ANT-compatible heart rate monitor and power meter. It also has an optional swim mode which measures stroke count and distance. Either way you go, DEFINITELY figure in the cost of lithium ion batteries if you expect it to last the entire 140.6. |

I'm thinking that I've got the running part of this training covered. Just gotta get my bike and swim thing moving. I'd really like to hear about your experience at the Umstead in March. I have been very interested in doing some Ultra's and have read alot about Umstead. My son went to NC State for a year, so we were in part of the park a few years back ~ beautiful area! My Ultra goals have been side tracked a little due to this darn foot injury; however, I do hope to work up to a 50 miler (and maybe eventually a 100 miler) at some point. Hey ~ you are very close to me! I live in Harrison, Oh. |

That's just impressive. I bet you catch yourself driving in a car and you see a sign that says Latonia 28 miles and then think to yourself "Yeah I've ran that far", and then look down one line and see that the next city is 49 miles away. Then you think to yourself "It's on.." I know I would if I just ran 28 miles in training, just saying..... |

On the other side I ran 4 miles in Z2, didn't break a sweat and ate about 6 lbs of food. I'm so hungry these days. |

Regular 304 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I went out for a 115 mile ride today -- first time outside on my tri-bike since October. Wow. Sixty miles of it was with a group that I don't know. There were about 8-10 people organized by someone from the shop where I get my gear and about 50-60 people from a local bike club. The dynamics of the groups, subgroups, pace etc. was mind blowing. I'm sure I only picked up a fraction of the subtle cues and posturing. After I rode 23 miles to get to the start and arrived at 9:59 a.m. for a 10:00 start, I spent most of the next several hours trying to hang on to the back of a group that got dropped by the leading bunch. We were well ahead of the "B" group. When I process it more, I'll share some observations. For you bike geeks, I'm sure this is all old hat. For me, it was a sociological gold mine. Also, it was great fun. While I didn't feel like running a marathon, my legs felt pretty good. My back and neck were a little worse for wear however. What are your favorite quirks of riding in a big group (positive or negative quirks)? It was all new to me. |

We got one guy already out for a 28 mile run and klassman going out for a 115 mile bike ride. Am I way off on my training schedule? Damn, I was hoping to work in a 10 mile run and hopefully a 25 mile bike ride tomorrow if my body will allow it and these guys are out doing some very serious distance. Are these guys doing the normal thing or are they way ahead of this? Please let me know. |

No worries Doug! You are doing great. I'd be very willing to bet that many more people were doing their 10 mile runs this weekend along with 1-2 hours on the bike trainer than doing the extreme LR or extremely long bike ride as described by the 2 above. (and I have nothing but respect for being able to get the point in training to be able to do those things) I'd love to hear what was learned from the group ride...since I bike alone... |
