Awesome ride Chris.  Like the new saddle?

I can't speak to IM because I never did one, but on HIM I would say this is THE most critical part of the race. People often attribute a bad run to an overcooked bike, I would bet bad runs have as much or more to do with the first mile or two being over paced. Coming off the bike we have a bad sense of pace and it's very easy to get carried away. I really like my HRM in those first few lm.

Every time I have had a bad run I had over done the first few km. This clicked during a PM conversation with Bryan one day. Then my coached confirmed how many athletes blew their race in those first 15 minutes.

Had an awful race today, nothing in the legs.  #2 out of the water behind a kid that I usually beat and then I was about 30 watts low on the bike and just couldn't keep the effort up.  Got out on the run with basically the same result and just cruised it in.  Just not my day.

DNF for my wife as well because one of her big toes decided to act up and was hurting pretty bad.  She had a good first run (which is where the toe started to hurt), a good bike but had to pull the plug when she was limping running to the rack in T2.  Still good though as she got over the mental demon and gave it a good go on the bike.

Sorry you and your wife had a rough day, but excellent news on her bike leg. Getting back out there is a huge step.

I feel like I raced my first race today. Only 2 in my age group. I beat her out of the water, but she passed me on the run up to T1 (a portent of things to come.) I beat her out of T1, but she passed me immediately. I caught her and passed her with two miles to go on the bike, but she passed me back in the last quarter mile. She beat me out of T2, and proceeded to burn me on the run. But for all she knew, I was going to catch her. She was suffering, but she beat me by about half a mile. Race was delayed 30 minutes, bike shortened because of storms and heavy rain. 70F and light rain the whole race. Just perfect.

I still suck at climbing, and the swim was a train wreck (goggles fogged up, so I couldn't see much), but I hung with a pack, so it was the most physical swim I have ever had, and I gained a lot of time on the bike by hammering it on the down hills. No coasting for me today. Fun times. I needed a fun race.

Seriously, I'm not going to read too much into it.  My training all week was fine so I think just had an off day at the wrong time.

She said "whenever the toe heals".    I think the bug has bitten her again.

Great Job Felicia, if only the bike had of been the right distance you would have taken her! Laughing

Win or lose (usually lose for me as I have no sprint) I LOVE a good dog fight. It is great to walk away and really feel like you were in a race - fantastic work!

Tough day for you both Arend, but hopefully you both had fun regardless of the finish result. Count yourself very fortunate that your SO enjoys this silly little hobby as well.

100% truth - except maybe a better way to say it is to run EASIER off the bike. I still think it a good thing to run fast off the bike. The elusive trick is make fast easy.

Sounds exactly like how my 40k TT went last month.  Just an off day and power was WAY down.  Sometimes you just don't have it when it counts.

Yesterday we got our last long brick in - 7051 feet (HA! Take THAT Chris) in 4.5 hours (only 73 miles). I was sluggish and under-powered for the whole thing and was a little dispirited, but took a couple of HTFU pills and wound up with a great run over rough terrain: 6x2 miles at just under an 8 minute pace with a short 1 minute walking recovery between each. The run was mostly on unpaved forest service road and "featured" 1200 feet of elevation gain in about 12.5 miles. I was completely shelled at the end, but very happy with the effort and results. I enjoyed the discussion you guys had last week about pacing, TSS, IF, etc - so here is mine: Bike IF was .79 and Run IF was .9 - it was hard, but I surprisingly feel good today, but also am happy to have a for real off day as well - those are pretty rare around here.

Oh, and our neighbors are on vacation but their 9 year old had her first triathlon team practice this afternoon. Instead of skipping it she asked her parents if we could take her to practice, and of course we said yes. It was an absolute hoot! So much fun to see how happy it makes kids just to run around.

Hi all. I've been super tri MIA. Finally getting somewhat settled, but work has been a bit crazy.

I finally finished my RR for IMF.

Debating what to do about the PG tri next weekend...I might try to change from Oly to Sprint. We will see.

FUN!  Isn't it awesome when a good time trial turns into a great competition?  It's a lucky day when you have someone that close who pushes you.

Next time it's you across the line first!!

Congrats on a great race and your enjoyment is contagious.  Laughing

Odd how some days the legs just don't show up.  Do you think it's "must. train. more" or must rest at least SOME-time?  Wink

Well, results aside, it sounds like it was a very good day for your better half - I'd say even with a race you didn't hammer and she didn't finish, you both won if she's been re-bitten (is that even a word?).

btw, how tall IS she if she's on a 58?  I don't think I could even swing my leg over that bike.  Surprised  All you long limbed folks give us hobbits a complex...

Arend, sounds like you're taking the right attitude and just letting the race go. Happens to everyone now and then.

Curious what you think of the swim I logged today. Hoping I didn't hurt something. And it's actually in meters.

We are the perfect examples of how sizing your bike by your height isn't a good idea.  I'm 6'1" and ride a 54 P3 (long and low).  She's 5'11" and her tri bike is a 58 Cannondale Slice (narrow and tall).  So, she's shorter than me but her legs are waaaaaaay longer than mine!

Ha, well my first thought was that it was my kind of swim with all that pull!  The fact that it's your lats (rather than shoulders) that are the ones that are screaming from a set like that is a good sign IMO.  I hope you didn't hurt anything too but I'm guessing not.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
