Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() mndiver - 2012-04-21 11:40 AM bryancd - 2012-04-20 5:25 PMActually, I prefer to carry this:http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=hutchinson+fast+air&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=213243971412994493&sa=X&ei=69-RT8iVBqbc2AXz8OmHBQ&ved=0CDUQ8wIwAAIt has a flexible hose which makes it easier to fit on a disc valve extension. I also don't carry anything for an Olympic but for a Half and Full, I go with a spare tubular, CO2, chuck, tire lever, and razor blade. I have never used these instant fill type items you guys are talking about but they sound really cool and convenient. What's the catch? Why wouldn't I ditch the tubes, co cartridges, etc for this type of set up? Weighing in at 215-220 I would worry about not getting enough air in to prevent future pinch flats, but maybe this prevents those also. Bryan, you say you still bring all the spare items for half and full. Why? I'm guessing there is some catch I am not seeing and would like to know about it before switching over. Thanks for the input. Because sealants only work effectively on very small punctures. They are a good first go to option to see if they hold but if they don't, you need to change the whole tire out. They can be a PITA sometimes to use, that's why I recommend testing a few out on old tubulars to get an idea of what to expect when you use them, they can really make a mess. And the weight and aerodynamic penalty from also carrying a spare tubular is minimal. I flatted my rear disc at my first IMAZ in 2007 and was able to change it and get back going and get a Kona slot. I also flatted my from 808 at a Half IM 6 miles from T2 and rode it in. I'll never fear a flat and I know a flat in an IM won't end my day, so I am always prepared. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-04-21 12:20 PM Just finished an eventful ride.... Started off sluggish, drank a Red Bull and got better. Flatted about 1 hr from home and my spare tube was defective. Tracie nicely drove out a replacement and I continued on. Then did a really strong ride from there on in. 30' at threshold, then 40' at low IM watts, then 40' at HIM watts. Thank God for my wife! It's funny how rides start off like crap but you can always come good. ![]() |

![]() Had a pretty good long ride. Was planning to go about 70 @ roughly 210 watts. But decided I would try to ride harder just to see what happened. Did the first 50 miles at 225 watts, where I caught up to my group on the way back. I think they only were at 38 miles at this point since they ride a little slower and take much longer breaks. At this point I was done...my legs were getting crispy, and I just hung with the group the last 26 miles. Personal bests for me though...never even came close to that type of wattage for a solo 50 mile ride, and still held 210ish watts for the entire 76. Next week I'll likely do a 56ish mile ride with a 4 mile run to follow. Probably shoot for about 215 watts and see how that feels. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice ride Jason! We got back from FL yesterday. Good to be back home after 10 days away although 85 and sunny everyday is nice...minus the humidity. After the bout of stomach flu and training in the heat and humidity I am down to 158 LOL. Who goes on vacation and loses 5 pounds? The stomach flu really messed up my eating patterns for the next 4 days or so and I was not eating much. I had my bike serviced while I was gone so hoping to get for 2 hours here shortly although it is going to be 45 and windy so quite the climate change. I am 8 weeks from my event and feeling a little anxious about not getting many quality long rides in..hopefully I can right that...on the other hand I feel my threshold fitness is very good to build from. Should be checking in multiple times daily now..good to be back. Have a good Sunday. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Long ride yesterday with a bunch of climbing.... and I did it point-to-point, so I missed all the downhill fun! Was supposed to hike with the boyfriend this morning, but it's almost 8am and he's still not up. We should be seeing triple digit temps today, so I might go for a trail run instead while it's still relatively cool out. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got a 10k planned for today and then shopping to find some gold shoes for my friend's wedding. I did a 85min trainer ride yesterday with Game of Thrones. I was just about to register for Boulder last night as well and it has unfortunately filled up, so I guess I will have to do Calgary 70.3 instead. Prob better to do Calgary because it is relatively local and I don't have to drag my bike down to Boulder ($$$). I've accepted that I just need to go into the race with realistic expectations given my time constraints with training. Waiting for Cali 70.3 to open up registration--my planned race pre IM France. More time to train next year! |

![]() | ![]() Ugh, was up super early again this morning. Anyone have any tricks of how to get more then 5-6 hours of sleep? Since I was up so early decided to wash my truck before the sun was beating down on it, so that is a plus. HIM training seriously cuts into truck cleaning time so it really needed it. I decided to do a bike/run brick with the bike at what I was hoping for race effort to see how the run went and a mile from the house I ran over something and got a flat. UGH. I am getting a ton of practice changing flats lately between my bike and Tina's, but the thing is, I don't need the practice. Out of tubes now though so off to the store I go before my next ride. So that kind of ruined the effort test a tiny bit, but regardless the run felt fine, although hot. The run was at about the time I expect to be on my second run for the DU so a good test of the heat. I am actually going to assume it will be a tiny bit cooler next weekend as it looks like we might get a break in the weather. |

I went by one pissed off rattler today on the bike. I imagine he was not so thrilled with the cars driving over him. Saw a few yesterday as well. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all, just got back from my first race of the year. Seems I've managed to improve on last year's time by a huge 12mins coming in at 1:12:56! First time under 8mins for 400m and I thought it was a pb for the run but I've now discovered the run was a touch short at 3miles, but still first time under 8mins/mile during a race. Only 3 weeks til my Oly and 7 weeks til Adam and my first HIM! |

![]() Back from Vegas. Lake Mead is one of the most beautiful places to race, I think. Amazing to swim in a cool, clear lake. The desert is beautiful out there, amazing scenery. It was warm, crusevegas brought me a frozen bottle in the a.m. for the run, was pretty much melted an hour or so later, but was a lifesaver on the run. Wasn't as hot as I thought it would be on the run, but the first half is all uphill, and the bike course is very hilly. Used every uphill as a chance to sit up, spin it out, and drink water. Raced with De Soto coolwing, I've had it for a few years but never used it. Worked great. Didn't realize how hot it actually was until I finished. Got 2/9 in the old clydes category. I expect to be a non clyde soon anyway, but next year they are upping the clyde weight limit, so I'm gonna get it while I can, LOL. Saw #1 pass me on the bike but there was no way I'd stick to him Also beat my training partner in a head to head. First time I've ever beaten him, and I'm quite proud of that Now I'm going to take 2-3 weeks and just go by feel, get on the MTB, run and swim but nothing structured. Speaking of which, off on the MTB now for a couple hours |

Nice job on the Oly, not too shabby... I would be less inclined to try a sealant with clinchers, I would just change it out. But I don't know of any particular difference in the efficacy of sealant clinchers vs. tubulars. It just seems to be a better odds game to fix a clincher with a new tube and move on. |
