So Switch I'm guessing the mid to late 80s there would that be right?

Spot on '88.  If I could just get the hours of my life back that I spent doing my hair.

Stacey, how are things going with your training consistency?  We've missed you around here

Yes the 80s and hair...and fluro...and shoulder pads...and oh the horrible mental pictures.I haven't been around much because I have been trying to finish writing the last of my papers so that I can graduate from my Masters next month. I had five to finish off. I am now down to one which I am half way through. I never thought that I could write so much BS about organisational culture but amazing how the thought of being done for good can motivate one to dribble about nothing for 3,000 words. My consistency suffered a bit last week in order to get the other four finished but that's just how it goes sometimes.
Well getting four papers done is a very good excuse! That must feel awesome

Ha! I went to a small high school in the south that didnt offer much in the way of sports for girls. Cheerleading was their idea of girls athletics. I spent my time hanging out in the barn with the horses. So no "track". And "field" was something that needed mowing occasionally ;-)

A riding pic then? Unless you have a cheerleading pic

no 'old' running photo of me, unless you mean a pic of an 'old me'...and that's in my avatar already-ha
(I starting running at age 40. Never ran track in HS.)

Kim-when I'm in Bawston for conferences, I make sure that I get out and run along the Charles River with the thousands of people out there. I love it.
Feel like I just blend into the running community when I'm out there.

I just LOVED running in Boston. I can't wait to go back.

Speaking of blending in, my family all "ran" through Boston Commons after going on the Sam Adams Brewery tour + beer tour of the city. We did not blend in with the running community.

Boston is one of my favorite cities in the country.  I've ran along the Charles River when we stayed in Cambridge.  My sister just move about two hours southwest of there so I'm hoping to get back there more often.

Staying more disciplined with training efforts and volume seems to be helping. Pushed it a bit on the trainer tonight to see how things were going. ~2 1/2 that included an hour at 302 and then 2 x 20' at 326 & 328. And it wasn't *that* hard to get through. Don't have all specifics for Saturday worked out yet, but should be able to ride well again so long as I stay smart the next two days. Only the swim tomorrow should be hard.

So, your FTP is ~326?  But you did an hour at 302 and 2 x 20 at FTP all in 2.5 hours?

You are a freakin machine!

Do you find that scheduling a hard swim the day after a hard bike is the best sequence?  I have been trying to figure that out a bit, but I have noticed my legs can feel tired in the pool and that makes some of the longer intervals hard.  It could be that I'm just not strong enough on the swim yet, though.

The 20's weren't actually at FTP, just higher up in Z4 than I have been going. Might have been able to do it, but the next few days would have been compromised. I got what I wanted out of pushing to where I did. I think it helped that Tuesday's swim session wasn't all that hard, not as much as it normally would be. The hard swim on Thursday has been going ok for the most part, but it is one reason I do need to watch just how hard I push the bike. Legs haven't really been an issue. My body just gets burnt up if I push it too high for too much. It matters quite a bit that I work more in lower Z4 as opposed to higher up. So will be interesting to see how tonight goes. Even though swimming & biking work different things there is still overlap just because the work is hard. Though I can still do more total hard work than when doing only one of those.

Where is Matt?

I'm around.  I'm loving Trainerroad.  It is a way different experience than just doing intervals by HR, so maybe Skiba was moderately correct about HR.  I have my longest run of the off-season looming this Sunday (16ish miles), so we'll see if I can keep it together.

Ben, you are a beast on the bike! Those are numbers that are almost foreign to me

I had a couple hard rides over the weekend, so when I went to ride on Tuesday, my legs told me in no uncertain terms that they were not freaking doing it! Normally I would have tried to push through and been really disappointed in myself, but I thought about the conversations in here and decided to take a smarter approach. I stayed on the bike, but I rode at much lower intensities than I'd originally planned for....and you know what? I had a great ride this morning because I didn't try to kill myself on Tuesday.

Remember that Daniels running article you sent me a while ago? At the end, he gives a sample VO2max workout that has you at VO2 for 24 minutes throughout the workout. I adapted it to a cycling workout and am kind of in love with it.

Right around or just over 4. Can I still use race weight for that?

OK, I just saw those numbers and the 2 x 20 and thought it was FTP.  Good lord, Ben, you are such a strong cyclist.  It's awesome.  BTW, I just looked at your logs and you didn't even mention yesterday's little swim in addition to the ride :) Apologies for the stalking.

Do you know your swim workouts ahead of time with Masters?  Or do you just know that the Thursdays are harder?

I also noticed that you are swimming every day. Is that for the yardage? Water feel?  Can you explain that awesomeness to me?

uhhhhhh, he owes us an old running photo too. And Steve! And did you notice Ben didn't even acknowledge the photo prod: maybe he's Amish...or a vampire :)

That's some impressive wattage.  What's your W/kg?

Yes!  A Matt sighting!

Glad to hear you're liking TR.  I can't imagine a winter on the bike without it.

Ben, you are a beast on the bike! Those are numbers that are almost foreign to me :) I had a couple hard rides over the weekend, so when I went to ride on Tuesday, my legs told me in no uncertain terms that they were not freaking doing it! Article: http://rundynamics2.webs.com/DRFintervals.pdfProfile: http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/478595-VO2max-10.29.13

Nicole, that looks like a great workout.  Thanks for sharing that!

I, too, have found myself thinking of the conversations in here and the JD thread (and Salty scolding me) a lot lately :)  It has helped me back it down a couple of times over the last two weeks, and last Friday I took completely off when in the past I'm sure I wouldn't have.  Congratulations on training smarter:)

Having it work directly with Sufferfest videos really sold it for me.  I did "Violator" Tuesday, and it was way tougher doing the sprints to an actual target vs. going by feel, since HR doesn't pick up fast enough for a 5-15 sec sprint

Think I'm finally feeling back to "normal." Had a track workout last night. 5 x 1200 @ 4:42 followed by a 12' hilly run then 5 x 30 second hard hills. It was a long hard workout. Taking an "rest" day today. I'll still run when i go to packet pickup but it'll be super short.

It sounds like you have a very common condition that many runners and triathletes experience called patello-femoral pain syndrome. We have seen that runners with core weakness experience this.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

One year ago I weighed 238 lbs. and got winded walking up one flight of stairs - literally. I ran across a brochure for a triathlon...hmm. It seemed like an impossible task, but I was intrigued.

So how do you turn a weakness into strength? It begins with effecting a fundamental change to your triathlete self-image.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
