Can the OP provide a list of techniques? I think some enhancement is good, some not so good. There is a legal difference between enhanced interrogation and torture. We subject our own troops to enhanced interrogation, we would not/could not legally subject them to torture. I don't have a list but I'm sure you could google it. The ones I can think of off the top of my head are loud noises, waterboarding, stress positions, sensory deprivation, and sleep deprivation.
I might enjoy this discussion if it weren't for the whole alternate BT account part of it. Is creating a second account in violation of the site terms of service a form of enhanced forum posting? Edited by mrbbrad 2012-11-08 11:28 AM |

What was your hypothesis and is it panning out so far? Well my hypothesis is that when people are wrong and their beliefs are challenged they will ignore the topic or attack the speaker. So far the study has yielded positive results. You do realize that so far no one has attacked you right, trust me if they wanted to demonize you they would have. They just pointed out that you just set up an account to post on a controversial topic to get people stirred up. Is that not exactly what you did? That was exactly your purpose and that means you are trolling.
No I set up this thread because I have a strong belief about this issue. I have a strong argument and whenever I have brought this upin an informal or academic setting I have have had people disagree with me but they can never give a reason. They will say enhanced interrogation isn't effective because people will lie, then I give the coutnerargument and they are stumped. I just fundamentally can't understand how so many people believe something that seems to have no logical basis. Once again, I disagree with but understand some of the ethical arguments but the arguments against efficacy are baffling. -Calling someone a troll is an attack on them -I posted on this account name so as to not be demonized in real life, not online. -I couldn't care less about getting people "stirred up" I just actually enjoy discussing issues especially when I am in the minority and the majority argument seems to make no sense. I have read numerous news articles and op eds on the subject and they all have the same tired argument that people will just lie which is a terrible argument against enhanced interrogation. If you want to have a discussion like a grown up then own your beliefs. but if it looks like a duck (troll) Quacks like a duck (troll) and waddles like a duck (troll) then it is probably a duck (troll). Do not be surprised when you get treated like a duck when you have acted like one. Have you considered that they have a point? Yes at some point they will break but how many wild goose chases is one supposed to go on to find that breaking point. Is that really efficient? If your answer is to get the ultimate info at any and all costs then it is probably the most "efficient" within those parameters. If your argument is to get the most reliable information then no it is not the most "efficient". It may be the most effective but not the most efficient.
Either they decide they can't take it anymore and tell you the truth right away or they lie a few times. If it is the latter then it is not efficient but it is still better than not getting the information at all which is the alternative. If someone captured me and wanted to know the location of my brother so they could kill him there is no possibility I would tell them his location unless they used forced. I would hope I could still resist but eventually I would more likely than not break down. There is also the possibility I would be weak and give them what they want very quickly. Either way they would gain more by force than not using force at all. |

I didn't know posting on a second account violated the terms of service. I just read it and now I know. I'll sign off and never use it again. |

Did you join just to talk about interrogation? Are you looking for people who have completed full IM's as test subjects to try new techniques on? People here love torture so I suppose we are a good group to test the toughest techniques on.
No I have another account but I would rather not divulge it. When you say something that is logically true but sounds bad people tend to demonize you even if they can't think of one reason why you are wrong. Richard Mourdock is in some ways an example of this. Some Jews say that the Holocaust was allowed to happen because God was testing them. The theory is that people are given free will and sometimes God will intervene and sometimes he will not. His plan was to create a world where people are given these choices. Sometimes they will make terrible choices such as rape and murder. Sometimes God will intervene and sometimes he will test your faith. Mourdock's comments were insensitive but I don't see how they are out of line with the religious beliefs of tens if not hundreds of millions of people. I'm an atheist so I obviously don't agree with him but that is besides the point. The point is that even if you say something that is logically true people will still unfairly demonize you for it. Hotshotnidaleeggd: Please refer to Guideline #8 of the Forum Guidelines regarding representing yourself honestly. Posting under two accounts is forbidden. On your original point, Geneva Conventions and US law prohibit torture. |
