Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd love to have a farm too. Heck a house. Teaching in Maryland would require me to give up triathlons and horses to afford it, plus have an hour commute each way. anyways, I'd love to at least be able to afford my own horse again. At approximately $1000 a month for board, shoeing, and very basic vet care, its out of my budget. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Farming seems to be the theme and I would be in 100% if I could. Aquaculture (Pompano, hybrid bass, etc) and Ostrich Farm. Both can be semi-profitable, but can also lose your shirt if you don't know what your doing (I am in this category). Thought about it recently and even if I broke even I would love to do it full time. Kids and CPA tell me that its not in the cards just yet. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TriJedi - 2013-02-05 3:41 PM Be an actor on Days of our Lives. Lol, I used to want to do this! Drive to/from work without road rage. I just can't do it. Too many stupid drivers in Houston, I guess. I commute in Houston as well, so I can totally relate. I think what bothers me most is that I cut my commute down by about 10 miles and it still takes me the same amount of time to get home (using a different hwy)...I don't get it! For me, I would love to change careers! I work in HR, but would love to learn graphic design or be a personal trainer. But, as the breadwinner that just can't happen right now. I'd also love to be a writer. Anything I could do from home or on a contract basis...I really just want more time at home with the kids. I hate leaving for work at 6:30 and not getting home until after 6 pm. I just changed jobs, so getting home around 6 pm is much better than the crazy hours at my previous job, but still.... My wife keeps two horses, she boards both of them, inside stall with daily turnout, for $480.00 per month, including grain. Even including shoes and vet bills sheis nowhere near 1000.00 per month for two horses. |

Even including shoes and vet bills sheis nowhere near 1000.00 per month for two horses. Montgomery County, MD. I paid $250 once when my horse was injured to be in a field an hour away just to be fed once a day. She still needed shoes ($150 a month). If I wanted to actually be able to ride, even in a ring that was lit (lets be honest, I'm not getting out there till later so I need lights, we're talking $500 bare minimum for a stall and ring in this area. Most shoes for 4 around cost $200 in this area, and then I figure $300 a month for all vet care (worming, any emergencies). My last mare had to be retired at age 8. After I spent $3000 on a bone scan to find out she tore her rear suspensory and had a pelvic fracture. believe me, I've done the math. The cheapest I could do is field board but then I'm dealing with more blankets, less time to ride (catching horse) and still paying to use the barn rings. Most board for stall in this area is $650 a month. In this area meaning still a 30 minute drive. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I wish I had rhythm and could dance. Singing with out making people's fillings hurt would be good too. I would settle for dancing half decently. I'm totally rhythm challenged. I just don't hear a beat at all.
ETA my board is $350, trims are $50 every 7 weeks except for two rounds in the summer where I have to do shoes for the hard ground it's $125. I figure $50/ month for vet bills on average now that my horse is retired and we're not doing anything fancy (gastroguard, Legend etc.) That is with him living out- a stall is 450- 475 at the small barn I'm at. Other barns around are up to 950ish (last time I looked which was a few years ago.) Plus we had to pay a large hay surcharge this year for the drought (contract has us split hay over $6/ bale.) Oh, blanketing is $20 in the winter and I do a joint sup that's about $20/ month. I budget for $500 a month for one retired horse. Edited by Moonrocket 2013-02-06 11:47 AM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm pretty ok with my life. I could prefer living somewhere warmer but my job isn't the easiest thing to move around with so it's a tradeoff that I'm currently willing to make. I would rather have some magic button that made all the slackers in my family start being responsible for their finances, decisions, kids, etc so that they could stop relying on my mom so for the first time in her life she could focus on herself. It would be amazing to wake up tomorrow and find that out. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would love to quit my job and never have to worry about money ever again. I would travel the world, train and race anywhere I pointed on a map. But I would settle for being able to retire now instead of 19 years from now and I would love to run my own business and make my own schedule so I can spend as much time with my family as I wanted. If I had the knowledge and financial security, I would do it in a heartbeat. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I wish I could run again...I've been dealing with knee damage of some kind since September 2012 but have been unable (financially) to go see my knee specialist to figure out what's wrong. Reasons? My youngest broke his elbow which required surgery and pins ($5,000) and my wife is now pregnant with our fourth so all extra income is being stashed away for that. |

But based purely on economics:
eluding to my first point though....someday these will happen! |
