Drive to/from work without road rage. I just can't do it. Too many stupid drivers in Houston, I guess.

Word on that.  Then again, I'm kind of a stupid driver myself.  That's why I ride a lot.

When I moved to Chicago I learned to not be road-ragey. Then again I drive a car like once a month.

Oh I would like to add that I would like to be a fighter pilot. Bad eyes. Dangit.

I've pretty much done everything I've set my mind to do. One of my primary goals in life was to NOT turn 50 and say, "I wish I had..." anything so I made sure I didn't.

3 years to retirement so I guess I can't retire yet but I like my job so I'm not even all that upset about that.

Not much, in answer to your question.

Try living in Boise. My wife is always mad at me for my road rage, but then when she's driving I catch her swearing all the time.

Here is how my Saturday drive went. I left the bank to go to the gardening store. Someone pulls out right in front of me going 20mph in a 35mph zone. I'm trying to be patient so my wife doesn't get mad at me. The person turns! Freedom! Oh wait, someone else just pulled out in front of me going 25mph. It makes me long for the future when cars drive themselves.

I love your post.  i turn 50 next year so I got nearly two years to do that.  That's time to do an IM (was lined up for Melbourne in March but....I don't think it will happen this year).  BUT Challenge Wanaka next January is on the radar.

Go watch Kona - me and my best friend are going in 2014.

so now I initially replied i wanted a more rewarding job.  I'm getting onto that at the weekend.

You my friend have inspired me.

Just wondering, why can't you?  I assume it's a job change thing maybe having to do with money but if that's the case, couldn't you have and train one or two as pets?

I guess I believed my Mom when she told me I could do anything, so I do whatever I want.  Sometimes it takes years to do, though. I guess I couldn't buy an airplane with what I have in my checking account...but I will.  (I prefer to fly in an aircraft - I have a fondness for climate control)

I'd love to retire and pursue some fun things.  But since I can't retire any time soon, I'm just going to pursue the fun things anyway.

I'm focusing on can-do right now.  I've always wanted to chase storms, but have been busy with work & life.  This is the year.  And even if that turns out to be a bust and I don't see much, I will mix it with another hobby and try to make the traveling worthwhile.

Oh, I've got a dog I trained....and she's my buddy.  But, I've got a 15 year old and twin 12 year olds...very active kids.  Two of them will run the Youth/Junior elite tri circuit this year, so I'm pretty much tapped out on time AND money.

There was a day when I hunted 40-60 days a year, and trained 3-6 dogs at a time for field trials and hunting...but these are not those days.  These days, all of my time goes to my kids.  I'm not wishing it away, and I savor every moment.

Still, I miss the time with dogs....so I look forward to getting back to it one day.

The only thing I truly CANNOT do that I wish I could (everything else I'm working on; the difference between can and can't is just the time frame) is make my parents at peace with themselves and their lives.

I always wanted to move to the outer banks so after college I did just that. I couldn't get a job on hatteras island but landed one in Atlantic beach. If I had it
My way I would move to a South Pacific island and work at a diving or surfing resort. The only thing that is stopping me is the fact that my job offers health insurance and retirement. I can't carry tanks to and from a boat when I'm 90. Maybe once I retire I can do all that with some money in my pocket

Live in Hawaii, have a husband and a couple of kids (for a single white women my age in SE Asia, that's approaching "can't"), not have to work every day or worry about money for my own future and caring for my aging parents, run 10 miles or so a day without something hurting all the time, and train as much as I want. Hate to use the word "can't" as it sounds too definite and final, but none of these are very realistic, at least in the short term. Having loads of money would solve some of this but, given my choice of career and the current economy, that's not likely.

Sing it, sister, being half-white ain't any better! I'm really happy hobnobbing around by myself on the (ever-shrinking) Funny Farm, though, and my life is rich even if I'm not. I do worry about my aging parents, though, although it's just do what I can and let go of what I can't.

"At least in the short term" is key. As I said ... the difference between can and can't is really time. You're such a bright and passionate woman, and I hope some good breaks come your way that you can take advantage of.
