Jon - NBX in Narragansett was the official bike shop last year. I am pretty sure they did shipped bikes.

Yeah the beach is really georgeous.  Just make sure to put on lots of sunblock and spend lots of time relaxing

Great idea! I am ready for that beach time right about now!! I think you get a timed slot to set up T1 on Sat. but then you'll probly have to move the car and pay to park for the beach.

c'mon - you didn't take a free pedi-cab? 

may be staying at the War College if we can my FIL into making the trip (as he's a General - so we get the REALLY good quarters) - otherwise we have friends who live in Jamestown.

Amazingly no jelly fish, perfect temp for wetsuits, moderate chop, and just a couple of shark sightings  

Nah - you'd be better off with a nibble from a shark ~ then you wouldn't have to worry about the mountain on the run course. The water was perfect last year - sheltered, nice temps, no jellies (like NYC last year).

It'll feel like a shark ripped into your legs when you're climbing that hill for the second time  

But seriously, there is a peninsula that stretches out and forms a cove which, for whatever strange reason, made me feel safe   I always think, even if by the remote chance there is a shark in the area, you still have a 1 in 3000 chance (approximately) of getting eaten.  I'll take those odds  

The chop was decent though last year, so make sure you work on your bilateral breathing.

You have a better chance of a shark popping out of the bushes somewhere on the bike course and eating your tires than you do seeing a shark in the harbor of refuge (where the swim course is). I have been surfing and diving the nearby waters for years and can count on one hand how many times I have seen one in the area...Block Island is a different story. No worries!

The wind direction last year was somewhat unusual. It is usually out of the southwest or calm during that time of the year (at that time of the day). Last year it was out of the southeast and later shifted southwest as the land heated and activated the seabreeze. I did a couple of swims at the course last year prior to the race and saw a couple of jellys. Nothing worth getting fired up about.

oh, great, now I'm going to be on the lookout for sharks hiding in the bushes... those sneaky little bastards...

Easiest way not to spend Sat. driving around RI is not to do the race  - BUT, if ya wanna race, then do the pick up on Fri. from the RICC (Rhode Island Convention Center) in Providence, get a hotel down by Roger Wheeler Beach Fri. night and you'll be right there on Sat. to drop off everything in T1 on Sat.  At packet PU, you will receive a "time slot" in which to drop off your bike and other stuff in T1 but they weren't too strict about it.  We were done w/ registration by 3pm Sat., hightailed it down to the beach and made the 6pm cut off.  What they are strict about is that T1 is a "clean" transition. On Sat., you leave your bike and whatever else you want at your rack and everything has to be in a bag. After the swim portion of the race, your wetsuit, goggles, morning clothes, etc. gets placed in your #ed bag (by you) and will be delivered to Providence and ready for you to pick up after the race. So, after you hop on your bike, you don't have to go back down to the beach at all for anything.  Most folks stay at a hotel in Providence Sat. night and there are shuttles that shuttle racers down to the start.  The registration process was a nightmare for us, so leave yourself extra time on Sat. just to make sure.  It was a great race and well worth the running around the day before.

Registered last night! It will be my first HIM for 2009 and a warm up for IMKY!

Im not sure about being able to drop off your T2 bag on Friday - but if you can't, then yes, you'd have to be in Providence (or know someone who will be there) to drop off on Sat. and then trek to the beach. It didn't take 3 hrs. though. Closer to 1-1 1/4. We had to get T2 bags together, figure out how to transport 3 bikes and 3 people in a small car to T1, etc.... Honestly, on Sat., I was frustrated b/c we left NJ early Sat. AM, hit traffic on the way up then spent too much time in line to register, blah, blah, blah. It WAS a great race and I'm sure they will have more help at registration on Sat. to alleviate the 3 hr. wait. Im doing it again and looking forward to it!
