Jon - NBX in Narragansett was the official bike shop last year. I am pretty sure they did shipped bikes. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dream Chaser - 2009-03-05 2:18 PM The different T1 and T2 transition areas, for me, was no problem. As mentioned, if you can, get to the Convention Center on Friday. They hand out passes which indicate what time you are to be in the transition area on Saturday to set up your bike. I plan on grabbing an early time, setting up everything, and then hanging out with the wife and kiddies at the beach right there. The beach is georgeous! Nice fine sand. And if you forget anything when setting up T2 on Saturday, you can just simply bring it with you Sunday morning. No biggie. I stayed at the Renaissance and it was awesome. But this time around I really want to try and find a Hotel with a pool. Does anyone know of a Hotel in Providence with a Pool? The Hilton has a pool, according to their website. I like your plan--I was thinking of the same thing, making a day at the beach on Saturday. |

I think you get a timed slot to set up T1 on Sat. but then you'll probly have to move the car and pay to park for the beach. |

It can't be worse than the NYC Tri, which has the finish line about 1.5 miles away from T2, meaning that after you've finished the race, you then have to drag your exhausted sweaty a$$ back across town to retrieve your bike and transition gear. c'mon - you didn't take a free pedi-cab? |

I booked a room at the Holiday Inn (10 miles from swim start). I figure i can get an extra couple of minutes of sleep that way. Plus my wife can hang out at the beach on Saturday while I run around and set everything up. may be staying at the War College if we can my FIL into making the trip (as he's a General - so we get the REALLY good quarters) - otherwise we have friends who live in Jamestown. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is it normal to be more woried about getting your leg chewed off by a shark than the hill on the run course? |

Nah - you'd be better off with a nibble from a shark ~ then you wouldn't have to worry about the mountain on the run course.

![]() laddheath34 - 2009-03-09 1:03 PM Is it normal to be more woried about getting your leg chewed off by a shark than the hill on the run course? It'll feel like a shark ripped into your legs when you're climbing that hill for the second time But seriously, there is a peninsula that stretches out and forms a cove which, for whatever strange reason, made me feel safe The chop was decent though last year, so make sure you work on your bilateral breathing. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You have a better chance of a shark popping out of the bushes somewhere on the bike course and eating your tires than you do seeing a shark in the harbor of refuge (where the swim course is). I have been surfing and diving the nearby waters for years and can count on one hand how many times I have seen one in the area...Block Island is a different story. No worries! The wind direction last year was somewhat unusual. It is usually out of the southwest or calm during that time of the year (at that time of the day). Last year it was out of the southeast and later shifted southwest as the land heated and activated the seabreeze. I did a couple of swims at the course last year prior to the race and saw a couple of jellys. Nothing worth getting fired up about. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm trying to decide if I should sign up for this race and I have some questions about the athlete check in and gear drop offs the days before. I read some of the race reports from last year and some people had an easier time than others with the pre-race activities. What is the best way to get everything done if I want to spend as little of Saturday as possible driving around RI? If I read the athlete guide from last year right, I need to check in at RICC (I assume this RI Country Club in Barrington), check my run bag in also at RICC and check my bike and bike gear in at Roger Wheeler State park. The RICC stuff closes at 5:00 and the bike check in closes at 6:00, so does that mean I could show up at RICC at 4:45, check in, drop off my run bag and drive straight down to the bike drop off and be done in an hour and a half? It sounds like the stuff I leave at T1 will be waiting for me after the race - is that true? |

Easiest way not to spend Sat. driving around RI is not to do the race |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kristinc0916 - 2009-04-03 3:32 PM Easiest way not to spend Sat. driving around RI is not to do the race So what is the benefit of going on Friday night for packet pickup? Don't you have to go back to the Providence on Saturday to drop off the T2 bag, or can you do that on Friday night too? It took you 3 hours to get from Providence to Narragasett on Saturday? Were you stuck in traffic the whole time? When you were doing your bike drop off at 6:00, did you get the feeling that they would have shut you out if you were a little later? Thanks for the information. This race is timed perfectly for my training program, but the Ironman 70.3™ registration price plus what seems like a day or more of registration/stuff drop off headaches seems too much for a half iron race. If I can figure out how to minimize the Saturday headaches and prevent paying for a hotel by staying at my parents house the night before, which is an hour drive from race start, then I can swallow the M-Dot price. Easiest way not to spend Sat. driving around RI is not to do the race Im not sure about being able to drop off your T2 bag on Friday - but if you can't, then yes, you'd have to be in Providence (or know someone who will be there) to drop off on Sat. and then trek to the beach. It didn't take 3 hrs. though. Closer to 1-1 1/4. We had to get T2 bags together, figure out how to transport 3 bikes and 3 people in a small car to T1, etc.... Honestly, on Sat., I was frustrated b/c we left NJ early Sat. AM, hit traffic on the way up then spent too much time in line to register, blah, blah, blah. It WAS a great race and I'm sure they will have more help at registration on Sat. to alleviate the 3 hr. wait. Im doing it again and looking forward to it! |
