JC5066 - 2009-07-15 7:12 AM I find it amusing that if we talked about wearing a helmet or not, 99% of would say to wear one.  If we talked about riding on the correct side of the road vs riding down the center lane or against traffic, 99% of us would say to ride on the correct side of the road.  If we talked about other safety issues I would guess 99% of us would agree.

So; why is it that with headphones so many people are willing to A: break the law and B: put safety concerns aside when it comes to listening to music?

Hearing is such an important aspect of riding.  Most of our visual attention is on the road/path ahead of us, watching for obstacles in the road.  Even with the best mirrors our sight is extremely limited to what is behind us.  On top of the traffic issues you have to be careful of those pesky dogs that you will come across at some point.

Even at a low volume, earphones will severely restrict your hearing.

Again, tell me what i should be hearing and how I should react when I hear it.

Yes I listen to ipod while cycling, using these: http://www.slipstreamz.com/content.asp?subID=8
Wearing these at (as Gordo said) an appropriate volume, I can hear cars coming up behind me, dogs bark, birds sing. I can easily carry on conversations with fellow cyclists.

Besides that, I have yet to hear exactly what audio clues I am missing by listening to music, and what actions I would take if I heard those clues. Maybe 98% of my cycling is done in a straight line 2-3 feet to the left of the white line, a position I'm holding regardless of what's behind me. The rest of the time (lane changes, intersections) I'm relying on thorough visual checks. My riding is mostly done on country roads, little traffic, no urban problems, no shared-use trails.

Be free. I ride with headphones 99% of the time. I don't use them if I am riding with others and I have been laeving them home lately as they are not allowed in my race. To avoid burning in hell you may want to add a religious song to your playlist. May I suggest Amazing Grace by the Dropkick Murphy's?

I spend more time looking at my PM than paying attention to which Sara Brightman song is coming on next.

It was better than the Celine Dion playlist you sent me last year at Clearwater! From your 'personal collection' as you call it.

I rarely ride with music. I would say 1 out of every 5 rides I will listen to something. However, when I do listen I only have one ear bud in and that in my right ear. Most of the time when I do listen to music I end up zoning it out to pay attention to my surroundings.

I honestly think listening to music depends on where you are riding. If you are in a city then I say it should be a no go. There are way too many things going on that you must pay attention too. If you are ride more country side, then I really do not think it is that big of a deal.

I do not wear headphones on the bike. I do occasionally wear headphones on the run. I ride mostly on a multi-use path.

I don't do it, but I can see how some might think it is OK.  I occasionally ride with someone that likes to listen when he rides and I hate to say it, but it annoys the hell out of me.  He's forever reaching around to the pockets on the back of his jersey feeling for the buttons he wants to push while steering one-handed resulting in a few weaves.  He doesn't really give shout outs for road hazards because he is tuned into his music, and frankly, I quite giving verbal warnings as well because I know he can't hear them anyway.  If I want to suggest a turn ahead and he is leading, I have to pull up alongside to get his attention.  Also, I don't see how he could tell where a car horn was coming from while listening to music through earphones.  He (and I) usually ride solo, so he is used to listening, but I don't see how anyone could do it while in a group or pace line without getting other people a little annoyed.

To each his own, but I don't call the guy to ride anymore.  If it happens, it happens.

This is one of those subjects where everyone has made of their mind on the subject long ago and no one is gonna change their mind.

People smoke, drink, do drugs, don't wear seat belts, talk on their cell phone while driving, have unprotected sex in bathroom lavatories, drink pool water when the're swimming laps, ride bike on the street with 2000 lbs automobiles, walk around in thunder stroms carrying lightening rods and eat bacon triple-cheeseburgers.....

Life is full of risks!  Like has been posted, we all have our own acceptable risk levels that we're comfortable with.  The 'added risk' (if any) of music while biking  above and beyond the inherent risk of biking on the road is down in the noise.

But I think everyone knows what the response would be if you wrote in to BT asking "Is it ok if I smoke and shoot heroin daily?"

I think listening to headphones while riding is fine as long as you agree to not file any insurance claims against anyone except your own insurance if you get in an accident. I also feel the same about seat belts and helmets. It's your choice until I have to pay more money for insurance to cover your decision.

ps anyone that wants to carry a lightning rod around in a thunderstorm please call me. i'll bring the video camera and we'll have the number one video on youtube.

Solo, do what you want. If you are riding in a group or where there is lots of ped or bike traffic, no way.

My point was I'm all for freedom to choose to do something stupid, but I think there need to be consequences to those choices. I wasn't arguing what is currently legal in New York, just stating what I think would be better than the current laws, both requiring and not requiring helmets.

If you choose to not wear a helmet, and then get in an accident where you suffer head trauma, I don't think I should have to subsidize your health care costs.

I never said that wearing ear buds gives someone the right to run you over, but just like having a BAC of .03 causes the police to assume that an accident is your fault, even though it's not illegal to drive that way, wearing ear buds should create an assumption that accidents are your fault. If you can show reckless endangerment on the part of the driver that hit you then file your insurance claim.

I don't know...I never do it normally. But after reading this thread, I checked the law and it's not illegal in FL, I may start wearing the headphones...

Then again, I may start not wearing a helmet either because it's not required if you're over 16...

But I'll probably stick with what I'm doing since I think cycling in Florida is dangerous enough.  # 1 in cycling fatalities 2007 WOOT!!!

I hade another cyclist try a u-turn in front of me this morning AFTER I had yelled "On Your Left" when I went for the pass. I came about three centimeters from t-boning her.

Of course she was wearing headphones and said she didn't hear me. I just smiled and thought of BT...then used the adreneline to ride really fast...
