I'd definitely be up for trying and buying such a device.

When I started running, I was always beet red after just a short run and always super hot.  My sweat rate is incredibly high.  I always thought as my fitness improved, my heat output and redness would decrease, but it never has.

After I race, I have to put a fleece sweater, a hat and mitts on to keep myself warm.  I have such a huge drop in temperature and would love to see what the actual numbers tell me.  Perhaps I'm actually dehydrating while I race....

Count me in. I am also a large, heavy sweating Clydesdale living in Florida.

And really, no Anal Probe? Takes away so many marketing opportunities-
Here are some sample names:
Area 51 probe-We check the same way the aliens do
Bendover temp Monitor-When you really need to know how HOT you are
and of course, the mastercard commercial version
Entry Fee for Race- $125
Hotel near race venue- $100
Carbo Loading Dinner- $50
Getting to take the anal temp probe out after the race-Priceless!!

As I'm sure you know, heat exhaustion (which is common among endurance athletes) is a different beast from heat stroke (a rare but deadly illness). Heat exhaustion isn't necessarily associated with an increase in body temperature, but rather it is associated with an electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, and stresses on the body caused by heat. These signs and symptoms (at least by current medical research) are not necessarily associated with an increase in body temp.

This sounds like something that I am interested in doing.  I too get extremely hot during my workouts only to find that I occasionally break out into a case of goosebumps (not sure about the relationship here, but I do feel cold).  Interesting study.

Count me in too. As a former bio-medical instrumentation engineer, I would love to help evaluate a new capability.

I'm in, too. I've got Reynaud's, hopefully it'd be interesting for your study to include that.

Heh, I think all the Crappy Winter Weather Challengers should get this and wear it throughout the winter as added why-are-we-doing-this?? bonus points! I could see the posts now: "My skin temp got down to 85 today, woo-hoo!!" "Oh yeah, well I busted the 80 mark yesterday, beat THAT!"

There's always the esophogeal temp probe...

OP: If you still want lab rats, especially big fat ones, I'd be happy to help.

Yea, esophageal thermocouples give a more accurate and time sensitive measurement, but I think that would be even more uncomfortable than anal thermocouples. The techs told me they really try hard to keep the two separate. I don't know though? Didn't worry me much though, I was collecting the data not being probed.

I would be interested in trying this out as well.  My body temperature is always a little warmer than most even when inactive.  I would be curious to see the change while working out.  (If sweat is any factor than my body is working REALLY hard to stay cool)

A new question: Does the environment matter for this device? As in will it work just as well in the cold as it would in the heat? Can it go both ways? Tell if the body is shutting down due to a hypothermic state or just from overheating? If so, I have a cold room at work (40*C) that we work in quite often, where it could be tested. Or you know, I could just take it to the streets.

Yeah, John, we're on the same page, but your post discussed skin temperature whereas I was specifying core body temp. I'm sure the OP understands the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke, but it's a difference that is frequently overlooked by the public and media (and many medical professionals). I've been dispatched to a half dozen cases of "heat stroke" in the backcountry, only to discover they were all heat exhaustion (thankfully). The OP's research, and all these generous lab rats, may help us better understand the correlation between body temp and head exhaustion.

I'm interested.  I live in a climate with severe temp changes throughout the year and definitely suffer in hotter temps (and THRIVE in cool/cold weather).  Would be curious to see how much of that is physical versus mental...
