yeszir1 - 2010-07-09 5:10 PM And I'm in...it may be the death of me...but I'm in! It'll be my first HIM and the last race of my first season...I'll be sure to speak a few words of encouragement as you all blow by me on the bike!

ALRIGHT!  You're going to rock that race; you're a natural.

That means you, me, Pete, and Jason are all doing it from the Tri Club.... cool!

Chad - that's a great idea, but I fall alseep by 8:30 p.m.  I might could hang Thursday night if there are others interested.  I do love ghost walks and have done several in different cities.

We can pretty much schedule a group tour for whenever we want, so if we started at 7, or earlier, we'd be done by your bedtime.  OR you can just take your chances falling asleep during the walk...

Chaderbox - 2010-07-10 4:51 AM Hey B2B'ers, I hope all is well.

I was just in Wilmington visiting my mom and I went on the Ghost Walk that they have in downtown Wilmington.  It was really quite neat, and a lot of fun.  90 minutes, and maybe 1.5 miles with minimal stair climbing (<10 steps).  The people that do the tours will do groups, and I was curious if anyone might be interested in checking it out before the race.  I'm thinking that Thursday night would be the best.

You can find info about it here
www.wilmingtonwalkingtours.com

If people are interested I think it would be a lot of fun, and I'd be happy to figure out pricing and doing all the setting up for a group.

I LOVE ghost walks, graveyards, and guided historical tours in general... absolutely LOVE 'EM!  Careful, I may get more excited about this than the actual race!

That's ok, I'm more interested in going for Peanut Butter Cup pancakes the next morning than I am for the race.

Be aware that the pancake place, Kate's Pancake House, is on Carolina Beach.  It's going to be 30 minutes or so from Wrightsville Beach, depending on traffic, and parking can be brutal.  Also, they are open from 6a-1p.

With the Ghost Tour, a group package starts at $200.  The regular price of a tour is $12 for an adult.  So we'd need 17 people interested in order to make it worth the money.  If we don't have that many people interested, we can always just go on the regular tour which would start at 1830.

Thought I would post this for everyone. You can maybe use it as you plan your race nutrition needs.

I wrote Setup Events, and it seems I was not alone, asking them to change the location of the 1st aid station on the bike.

So I got a response yesterday telling me that they have made changes from previous years and that they will post the new info online soon.

Basically for the HIM there will now be 3 aid stations on the bike route.

1st @ 21mi just after getting off the interstate (in the past the 1st station was @30mi)

2nd @ 36mi turn around point

3rd @ ~ 46mi

I personally am really happy about the change. Hope this helps out.

That's great news on the aid stations change.  Do we have any veterans or locals that can tell us about the bike course?  Is it hilly, smooth or rough pavement, sharp turns, etc.?

The bike course is flat. there is 1 hill over a bridge at about 55mi. For the most part the raods are good. The out and back section once you turn off of 421 at mile 30 to the turn around and back has some rough spots, but nothing to serious.
The 1 thing you need to watch out for is at about mile 1. You will go over a metal bridge grate. They do lay a carpet over the grate and it is really short (15yds) but just pay attention to that. In the 1st mile or 2 you have to make some 90 deg turns to get out onto the course , but it was no biggie. Plenty of space to get around without problem.
Overall a very good bike course where you can get some fast times.

Thanks for the heads up and perfect timing! I'm heading to the beach with a friend thursday to ride the route and that could've been ugly. Is there anything else to watch for on a non-race day? We plan to ride at 8am and anybody's welcome to join but we'll be going really, really slow (like 16mph).

I have never ridden the course other than on race day.
You will not be able to ride the interstate section, about 11-13 miles, so will need to get on 421 via another route. You can ride the route they used in the 1st year (2008) which would take you through town to get on 421 (you will have to cross another bridge with grates in that case)
Also I believe that 421 near town is a very busy road, so I amnot so sure about doing that on a Thursday morning, if that was your intention. I guess if you plan to ride it at 8am on the weekend that might be better.
Enjoy it out there.

Now we're getting too complicated for me to remember it all so I'll scrap that plan for now. I think we'll just park at the aquarium and head towards wilmington via River and Dow roads. Thanks for the info and I will definitely enjoy myself

I tried to register for the HIM and the only spots open are the charity spots that costs quite a bit.

The half has sold out early the last two years and maybe the first year too.  Your only option is the charity spots at this point.
