I love Downton.  I actually found a stream of Season 3 in October when it was being aired in the UK.  I am considering watching it again as it airs in the US just so I remember what is happening to talk to friends without spoilers.

I cannot believe there isn't a thread about it! Who watched! Was I the only dummy to not know it was a 2 hour premiere!?

Oh Lady Mary & Dowanger Countess are quite the force. I loved Shirley McClaine as the the progressive American!

I'm so excited, and in such an improper way! The Lord & Lady would not approve of these hysterics!

weekend

Does she turn into a cat?

The more I think about it, the more I think that BATES may have REALLY killed VERA!

There's that one scene in the jail cell where the one inmate goes to Bates something like "I know I'm dealing with a murderer" and Bates goes "Don't you forget it!"

Bates has always sort of given me the creeps and I feel sorry for Anna because she's thrown herself at the first man that looked her way...

What do you guys think???

I thought the same thing when I saw that scene in the prison. Hmmmmm. Perhaps Mr. Bates is pulling the expensive starched shirts over everyones eyes!
I think it was Sir Richard Carlisle. Anna will trick him into revealing it.

I'm with TW. I noticed they made a big scene out of that interaction with Bates and his cell mate. I immediately thought, "Yep, he's got to keep up his street cred so he doesn't get shanked!" Even if he didn't do it, he has to keep up the tough-guy image so he doesn't get worked over in jail. I think they wanted you to have doubt about it, but I don't think he did it.

Wow! Am I so simple minded to fall for something like that??? Hmmmmmmmmm. Why would Carlisle have done that, though? Frame Bates? What am I missing/forgetting in terms of their interactions???

+1

If you've got a big dude getting some contra band as your cell mate, would you rather have him think your a cold blooded killer, or an innocent valet falsely accused...

I'm part way through season 2 right now... I'm hoping to be caught up by the end of the week!

As it is, I'm trying NOT to read too many of the posts in here until I'm caught up so I don't spoil it for myself.  I'm not doing very well in that regard.

Me too.  Prison isn't a nice place, and you don't stay out of trouble by proclaiming your innocence and being super nice to people, especially in the time period of the show.

I think Carlisle is definitely a prime suspect (or should be).  He first learned of the story of Lady Mary and Mr. Pamook(sp?) from Mrs. Bates.  I think at the time of Mrs. Bates' death he was still engaged to Lady Mary, and was still acting to suppress the scandal story.  If he didn't trust Mrs. Bates to keep her end of the deal in suppressing the story, then it's not too much of a stretch that he ( or more likely, someone he employed ) poisoned Mrs. Bates.

No, because he remembers intricate plot details that I gloss over and forget in the matter of the space of one show. I'm not WRONG, I am just inattentive. Innocent

I need to rewatch the season three opener. I was watching and chatting with "others" on my iPad. I feel I may have missed things. Full attention watching this evening.

You need to tell those people to bug off!
