Terps421 - 2011-04-18 5:50 PM Kim, I am in awe! Your run splits were right on pace!! Congrats!!

Do I have to spill your beans? or are you going to do it yourself Ms. Marathon plus some?  Come on Linda! Step forward.

x2, I don't like being out of the loop, though from reading your logs, you really are an inspiration!  I'd love to hear more about it!

There is this woman I know. She wasn't able to attend a race today because of family commitments yet she was very ready.  So instead she decided to run her own mega marathon in her hometown. ALONE. NO FANS.  She kicked a$$.....somehow her marathon turned into 29m!  She is really an inspiration.....you all should get to know her

Linda, you are an inspiration! I thought of you at the top of heartbreak, knowing you were running your marathon today without the benefit of all the cheering crowds, and thought, Linda is Amazing!

Can I just say, Kim, you are adorable!  I am so thrilled to have seen you and so impressed.  I was hoping to get you a better picture but this will have to do. (photographer, I am not) Kind of fun you get some of the drummers.  Congrats again!

Wow, what a fun picture...I am sure I wasn't as smiley after the upcoming hill! It was truly a thrill to see you, too! I would have run over to hug you, but feared taking out a few other runners in my path! Awesome!

kt65 - 2011-04-19 6:22 AM Thanks everyone! It was so great to run Boston and know I had all of you rooting for me and following me! I can't believe I saw Christina at mile 18.5, that was really awesome, what a beautiful smile you have! Not to mention that big camera! This race was one of the best experiences of my life, despite a calf cramp that reared it's ugly head at about the 40k mark....but I really am pleased with the race and have tons of respect for the course. It is a TOUGH course, that's for sure, but the crowd support helps sooooo much! Will write a RR when we get back to SF. For now, it is off to indulge in something yummy! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

What a fantastic run!!!

Just looking at your splits made me feel tired! I am in awe of you, I just cannot imagine maintaining that pace over 42+km.

Well doneCool

Kim: Fantastic!!!

Linda: Awesome to see that kind of self-motivation and 29 miles in 4 hours....wow!

FYI: I arrived back in Sendai yesterday after 2 weeks in the US and got on my bike for the first time in 2 weeks.  Unfortunately, the pool at my health club is still closed (5 weeks now) and they have not yet posted a date for re-opening the pool - I need to visit the club to get the scoop on how bad the damage was.  Time to start looking for an alternative swimming hole.

That was nothing compared to what others wear for this race.  I saw everything from people dressed as hamburgers and french fries, gorilla costumes, Uncle Sam and even a caveman donning only a loin cloth and appropriately barefoot.

So I'm in masters swim and I'm feeling as good as I've felt in the water in a month. Just absolutely flying effortlessly which never happens. When bang the lights go out in the pool area. We wait around for 15 minutes and they cannot get them on. I hit the hot tub which is working even though the lights are out and as I leave to shower they of course come on. So I only got in 1850 of the planned 3200. I'll make it up in the morning before spinning.

We had similar days. I wanted to swim and then meet my training group for a run through the woods with strength stations. I realized my new pool was far from the park and traffic would be awful, so I went to my old pool, which is 12 minutes from the park. When I get there they have closed the pool at 4 PM. So no swim. I walked 3 miles in the park before the run instead. D'oh!

OK you guys are on hyper drive compared to my last group...I am not even going to try to  read all of these blogs....the question is how to jump into this group and not get overwhelmed..... alright so I am going to just post my own thoughts for now and how training is going...and I apologize up front if I do not respond to a comment. ....Life is crazy ...and just trying to keep up with family, work, and other miscellaneous things....oh yeah and then there is training.... OK I am done complaining....like the rest of you are not busy either...... right?

So feeling good about my training so far this year...I have a Sprint in May ( I almost said no sweat...but then did not want to sound too cocky and add bad karma), Oly in July (now that one scares me a little..just the swim), then a sprint in the fall...maybe sprinkle in some other races in between, this is my third year and I have been adding an extra race or challenge every year.....

Every year I am feeling a little stronger and building on the previous year...longer, faster, maybe(very small maybe) smarter about my training....

So I did my first mini brick last week, got off the bike into a run and the calves started to twinge and almost cramped up....what do you think? Not enough hydration? Happened to me last year at my last race...had to stop and stretch them out....

A little late to the party, but better late than never right?

I used to have the problem with calves wanting to cramp when running off the bike.  I found that taking in elecrolytes on the bike and dropping it down a couple gears for a higher spin the last .75 miles or so really helps.  I'll even stand on the pedals and stretch my calves as I'm coasting into transition (or the garage if it's a brick).

Thanks Matt - I am always a little late to the party...procrastination is one of my many character defects. Good advice on the brick and calves I will try next time out.

Kim - Great race must be a great feeling, maybe someday I will get there.

Linda - inspiring run, makes my heart glad to know that there are people like you out there just doing these things to inspire and to be thinking of others that may be struggling especially children

I am going to throw this out to the group, so any tricks, ideas, inspiring thoughts, quotes that you have please share if you get a chance.

I need to train myself to get up early in the morning and train....I hate getting up....I need to get more training in and with my busy schedule this seems to be the only time when I can get the extra training in. Problem is this...I have three adult children 20,21,23 (yes that need to be out on there own, some in college) and stay up late. I wake at the drop of a pin, so trying to get to bed early is a waste of time, plus if any of you have children this age, you cant stop worrying about where they are at night. Ugghhh!

Anyway I have been trying to come up with ways to make myself get up early.....I know just f*(*$% do it !!! Easier said then done for me. One time I set the alarm clock one minute earlier every day hoping to gradual get into this habit....to no avail....I need at least 7 hours sleep or I am a bear to everyone around me.

Any thoughts would be appreciated......

I am the exact opposite. I enjoy getting up early and getting it done. M-F I am up at 5 for work, so weekends just roll into that time. But, i am trying to get in some of the workouts when the kids go to bed. ie, swim class at 9pm.

I know for me, whether its early or late, I need to focus on my attitude. If I said "I HATE GETTING UP", then every morning I would struggle to get up. As well, eye on the prize. Why are you training? What are you trying to accomplish?  Whether you are trying to go longer or trying to get faster you need to get the training in.

In these type of forums, we can all try to hold each other accountable for our goals here, but it truly is up to the individual to be accountable to oneself.

As Erica would say, JUST DO IT!

I with you. I like it to kick start my day. I'm up at 4:20 M-F and 5:30 on the weekends which will probably get earlier once sunrise gets earlier and the bike rides get longer. I love that feeling of being done by 7 or 8AM and knowing I've just done more than most people do in the entire day. That clean feeling in your lungs, that sense of accomplishment. Love starting my day right. Yes some mornings it's tough but you fight through it and surprise yourself and those days are extra special.

Ok, a couple of thoughts to add to the other great advice.

Make a decision to to whatever it is you want to do, and be specific.  For example, decide the night before what you are going to do in the morning (run/bike/swim?), decide what time, and get everything set out and ready the night before.  Do everything you can to take away the excuses.

You also have to decide that you aren't going to talk yourself out of it.  Don't let those negative thoughts creep in.

It will be rough the first couple of weeks while you adjust and learn to go to bed earlier and get up earlier, but you will fee fantastic after you finish that morning workout.

So, what time are you getting up tomorrow morning and what are you going to do?  We will all be waiting to hear how it goes :-)

Re: Early mornings... I'm with Trevor -- you need to find that inner motivation (why are you doing this??) and use it to your advantage.

That said, here are my tricks:

1) Make coffee the night before and set the timer. Wake up to the smell of fresh coffee. And if you are lazy and turn off the alarm, well, then you don't get fresh coffee. (My maker doesn't have a heated bottom, so if I sleep for 2 more hours I don't get super HOT coffee unless I nuke it. FAIL.)

2) Set your workout clothes out the night before. This just plants the seed that you ARE going to do this... Said seed can germinate all night and add to the morning's guilt if you blow it off.

3) If you find you end up getting sleep-deprived, find 15 minutes during your day (late afternoon for me) and take a power nap. Not a LONG nap, just barely staying conscious. It's amazing what that can do. Yes, hard to do with a day job, but I'm sure we all have 15 non-productive minutes every day. Make them productive by grabbing some shut-eye.

4) Find your "out" and know it will be there waiting. My "out" is Friday -- it's the day I get to sleep in, ahhhhh. Funny, I have found that I actually feel pretty sluggish on Friday when I sleep until 7am. But I look forward to it every week and when my alarm goes off Mon-Thurs I remind myself, "Friday you can sleep in."

5) I always tell myself, "No one is gonna do this for me." That gets back to Trevor's comment -- why are you doing this? Eye on the prize, eye on the prize!!

I'm curious how Linda gets up at 4am and runs 12-ish miles every day!! To me, that is just above and beyond!! It's that kind of mental stamina that clearly drives her to run 29 miles in 4 hours. Awesome.
